First Holy Communion Parent Meeting Nov. 28th at 7:00 pm

I trust everybody had a happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend. This is the last day of the liturgical year so it is a good time to ponder those things in the last year for which we are thankful. Maybe there were some things that were not so great. Usually these are things we cannot control or maybe by bad “choices” we made. There was a sage, I can’t remember his name, who said that there are no choices only decisions. He has a point. By saying “I made a bad choice” I’m somehow reducing my responsibility. If I say, “I made a bad decision.” I’m saying it was mine. I stand up, take ownership and take responsibility for my actions. Man-up or woman-up or person-up or gender-up — whatever politically correct term you want. It seems to me that to treat our children otherwise, “Poor baby you made a bad choice,” we dishonor them, we treat them with lesser dignity. Wouldn’t it be better to say, “You made a bad decision. Now you have to live with it, but it’s not the end of the world. You are a beloved child of God and there is a way to make this better. How do you think we can do that?” And then encourage the child to come up with solutions and help them sort it out. That is the art of parenting. It takes time and effort. It takes commitment and love. By this we encourage that resilience which children have and help them to develop it so that they can grow up to be resilient adults, not afraid of making a decision and learning to make correct ones. Not all decisions will be correct, some may be “boneheaded.” But, if the child says, “I’m determined, I will not run away or hide. I’m a beloved child of God,” they will bounce back and be ready for the next challenge. With encouragement and love from their parents this is likely to happen. That is a good New Year’s resolution and it is something for which to be thankful.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Madlen DeStefano. This is a gift Tremarco & Roberts Families.
