CHANGE: AN INVITATION TO GROW

Have you noticed? St. Isaac Jogues is a “Changing Parish.” But is there a parish in the Chicago Archdio-cese that is not a Changing Parish? In many ways, change is unsettling, but it can be a positive chal-lenge . . . an invitation to growth. G. K. Chesterton, in an article describing The Two Philosophies of Change, contrasts what he calls the philosophy of the Tree and the philosophy of the Cloud. They are antagonistic and irreconcilable. In Chesterton’s view:

A TREE goes on growing, and therefore goes on changing, but always in the fringes surround-ing something unchangeable . . . When the tree grows a branch at the top, it does not break away from the roots at the bottom; on the con-trary, it needs to hold on more strongly by its roots the higher it rises with its branches. (On the other hand), there is the opposing view . . . Something that changes completely and entirely in every part and at every minute, like a CLOUD. There is no core of a cloud; there is no head or tail that cannot turn into something else; it not only changes, but it is it-self only a prolonged change.

Chesterton’s images are remarkably like Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s contrasting interpretations of change as CONTINUITY or RUPTURE. As Catholics, continuity strengthens identity. Change should not be revolutionary. We do not re-invent ourselves according to the newest trend. But that does not mean that we should ignore the significant changes around us that influence who we are and how we function. St. Isaac Jogues is a “Changing Parish” in a positive sense. Improvements in our worship space are un-derway and building repairs and maintenance work are finally getting done. In a few short weeks Reli-gious Education will begin a new school year. New students, volunteers and staff will be another vital sign that change and growth are compatible. Our Commissions and committees are preparing for major parish events - - our Patronal Feast with a “Taste of St. Isaac Jogues,” outreach programs and liturgies for the Holiday Season. Again, change and parish tradition are in harmony. But have you noticed something else? The empty spaces in the parking lot and the empty places in Church on weekends. I have heard the observation more in recent weeks: “You could fire a cannon and not hit anybody!” This impression is confirmed by facts. We are no longer a parish of 1500 families. Our official number of registered families is now 900! Each parish conducts an “October count” for the Archdiocese as one way to measure Mass attendance. Our October count shows marked decline - - from a high of 1600+ in 2008 to 1300+ in 2013. We have begun to discuss changing our Mass schedule with the Parish Pastoral Council and the Finance Council. Both agreed it was a good idea. Their recommen-dation was “it’s time.” What do you think?

We are proposing three possible schedules for your consideration below. We welcome your input and observations. Please note: Saturday evening Mass will remain unchanged. The schedules at the bot-tom of the page present a reasonable alternative to our four Mass schedule. As a footnote to this arti-cle, please reflect on the overview of Vicariate II Deanery E Mass schedules and Registered number of Families taken from the Archdiocesan directory. It shows how our neighboring parishes are responding to change. Please help us to choose the best alternative to our present schedule of Sunday Masses. All three allow for a 2 hour space between Masses to remedy traffic problems and congestion in our parking lots. Please circle Option 1, 2, or 3. Tear along the dotted line. Drop your selection into the collection basket or bring it to the rectory by September 1st. We will compile the results and keep you posted. Know that your comments and suggestions are most welcome. You can call the Rectory at 847 967-1060 or send an email to [email protected] at any time. Remember, change is an invitation to growth. Any inconvenience is an adjustment - - like growing pains. Please pray that St. Isaac Jogues Parish will be like the tree that grows new branches without breaking away from its roots! Thank you! Fr. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES BEGIN AUGUST 25 Have you registered your children for the 2014-2015 Religious Education Program? Our first night of classes (Grs. 1- Confirma-tion Year II) begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 25. We will gather in the Church for prayer and then the children will go class with their catechists and parents/guardians will have a presentation. If you have not registered yet, please do so this week. Classes for Grades 1 – Confirmation Year II are on Mon-days, 6:45-8:00 p.m. and the Kindergarten RE class meets on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Our year runs from late August to mid-May. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children come each year as no one year suffices in providing what is important for a strong faith foundation. Students preparing for sacraments must attend for the two immediate years prior to receiving each sacrament. So First Graders are to attend religious education classes beginning this Fall in order to receive First Communion in the Spring of 2016. If families have children with special needs or older chil-dren who have not received their sacraments, we would be happy to discuss options for their religious education and prepa-ration for sacraments. Families with financial concerns are encouraged to talk with us as no child is denied religious education because of finances. All are welcome! Please contact the Religious Education Office, 847/966-1180 or [email protected] with any questions or concerns you may have. We look forward to the opportunity to help all families raise their children in our Catholic faith!

PARISH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES… RE ROOM PARENT – Share your time and faith with the RE Program by assisting with recep-tions (sacrament celebrations or RE nights) and/or registration, help a class with a project or listen to prayers or other needs the cate-chist may have. SACRISTAN – Share your time and attention to detail by helping to clean the church once a month so that people come to a welcoming, pre-pared place to praise and worship God. We are in particular need of help the second, third and fourth weekends. USHER – If you like to be with people – like to make them feel welcome and want to be helpful to them – this may be your ministry. Ushers come about 20 minutes before Mass begins, greet people, answer questions, distribute items before or after Mass (bulletins, prayer sheets), invite people to bring up the gifts, take up the collection, and assist the procession to Commun-ion. If you would like to talk with someone about any one of these opportunities, please contact the Religious Education office, 847/966-1180 or [email protected], and we will either pro-vide you with information or give your contact information to the coordinator of the particular ministry.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIESFRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIESFRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES We’d say it’s a success! What, you ask? It’s the “Friday Night at the Movies” here at St. Isaac Jogues. It’s been going on for more than 14 months now every second Friday of the month down in the Parish Hall. We’ve either shown a film with religious significance or one that makes you feel good after you’ve seen it. Our movie on Friday, August 8th, will be “The Song of Bernadette.” Jennifer Jones won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1943. It also stars Charles Bickford, Lee J. Cobb and Gladys Cooper. In 1858 France, Berna-dette, an adolescent peasant girl, has a vision of a “beautiful lady” in the city dump. She never claims it to be anything other than this, but the townspeople all assume it to be the Virgin Mary. What follows is the wonderful story of the Marian apparitions at Lourdes and the transformation of the lives of millions then and now. The movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and doors will open at 6 p.m. It’s all complimentary including the popcorn and the beverages. For more information call Dan Sobieski at 847/965-8072.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE:

With the help of ONLY 291 very generous donor families, our pledge total is $440,000 and we’ve already collected over $77,000!

We’re over half way to our goal! But there’s still lots of work to do. We need every-one’s help. If you haven’t pledged or contributed yet, there’s time - - pledge cards are available in the Holy Family Room or at the rectory. Every pledge counts!

A huge THANK YOU to those who have pledged and already making payments. Because of you, we just received our first deposit of $43,157!

space and parish facilities. Based on our Parish Case, we’re focusing on the highest priorities. Roofing contractors are evaluating possible solutions to stop the leaking. Heating companies are reviewing our very old boilers to determine exactly how to repair them and add some new features to provide better temperature control throughout the campus. We’ve already started some of the sanctuary work! We start evaluating next steps soon and will certainly keep you posted on our progress.
