ST. ISAAC JOGUES, MARTYR

The Church in North America sprang from the blood of martyrs, as has been true in so many places. The ministry and sacrifices of these saints challenges each of us causing us to ask just how deep is our faith and how strong our desire to serve, even in the face of death. We are living in a society that is awfully confused about the notion of freedom. Many understand it as freely doing what one likes. Jesus came to set us free and that is where he said “The truth will set you free.” If we look into the life of our patron Saint Isaac Jogues, we see an example of one who chose to be a missionary in the New World, risked his life opting to work in the midst of the Native Americans, with the goal to make Christ known to the less fortunate ones. His heart was filled with a missionary zeal which prompted him to leave his own homeland France, even at the cost of his life because he cared for the people of God. The human heart indeed is corrupted and en-slaved by evil. So, the only thing it desires is evil. All our thoughts, words, and actions are tainted in various degrees with prideful sin and rebellion against God. So even though we are free to choose, we freely choose sin most of the time. Ultimately, the final consequence of our sin against God is hell. A state of total and unending disconnection and separation from God. A place of unhindered and perpetual bondage to unrestrained evil, horror, and suffering resulting from everyone doing all their selfish and sinful heart’s desire, no matter what harm it may cause to others.

Therefore true freedom exists only in Jesus. How does it happen? God changes our heart by His Holy Spirit. God makes us spiritually alive by giving us a new heart. This heart desires to love God. It sees Jesus Christ as beautiful and desires to love Him as the Lord and Savior of our life. By faith, we give our life to Jesus and receive His forgiveness and freedom from sin. Not only this, but we are now free to do the very thing we were created to do — to honor and en-joy God forever. This is what St. Isaac Jogues did in his life by building God’s kingdom on earth. As we celebrate The Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs in Mass and with our Taste of St. Isaac Jogues, we are united people of different ethnic backgrounds. We thank God for the gift of the North American martyrs whose lives have been a source of inspiration to us. We are shown the way to live in unity and harmony with one another by sharing the joys of the gospel and in breaking bread together. It is an event which marks the 60th Anniversary of the parish, an achievement in itself. And this joy in God is from our heart — our new heart given to us by God. It is a time of grace that we want to celebrate with parishioners, past and present, old and new, friends and well-wishers. May the spirit of our patron, Saint Isaac Jogues continue to be for us a source of inspiration to build up the greater kingdom of God and to work for the salvation of souls. -Fr. Mario
