Saint George Catholic Women’s Group Visits Pieta Statue At DSU

Saint George Catholic Women’s Group includes women of all ages and

backgrounds working together to meet the spiritual and temporal needs of our

members, our parish and our community. We visit sick and elderly parishioners

and hold spiritual retreats, monthly meetings and luncheons, a Christmas drive

for the San Pablo Mission, annual “Diaper Drive” for the Hope Pregnancy Care

Center, and service projects for local charities. Our fundraisers help support

RCIA, and the summer Bible School for our parish’s children. We also provide

prayer shawls for the sick and bereaved, and host receptions following youth

events, funerals and other parish occasions. Being part of the community of

Catholic women in Southwestern Utah, the Diocese of Salt Lake City, and the

nation is a great source of inspiration and friendship.

On January 16, the Women’s

Group enjoyed a private

showing of the magnificent,

Vatican-approved replica of

Michelangelo’s Pieta that was

recently donated to the Sears

Art Museum at Dixie State

University. Theresa Bondad,

Assistant to the President of

DSU, arranged this special

event. The Museum’s curator

welcomed the Group and

narrated the tour.

The facsimile is faithful in every detail to Michelangelo's legendary sculpture of

Mary holding the body of Jesus at the Crucifixion. It was made from a mold of

the original Pieta that was used to repair the masterpiece after a 1972 attack in

Saint Peter’s Basilica. The

Vatican has authorized a

limited number of castings

from the mold in order to

bring this inspiring

masterwork to cathedrals,

churches, hospitals and

academic settings around the

world and thereby touch the

souls of millions who may

never be able to visit the

original in Rome.

Yet you ask, “What is stewardship?”

Is it a ministry within our Church, our parish

community? No.

Is it a program that teaches me about the Bible or scripture

or how to be a better Catholic? No.

Is it a service available through our parish to assist those in

need, particularly with spiritual needs? No.

Stewardship is not a ministry, a program or a service .

However, if you are involved in parish ministry, study the

Bible and daily scripture readings, strive to be a “better”

Catholic, and work to serve the needs of our parish and

local community, stewardship can be better understood.

Stewardship is a way of life. Jesus is the center of a

Steward’s life. We are called to be His disciples, to follow

in His footsteps no matter the cost. Is it easy? No, it is not

always easy. But, was Jesus’ life easy?

Will a stewardship way of life allow me to have all those

things that are important in my life? I don’t know; what is

important to you? A stewardship way of life will afford

you what you truly need in this life, as well as a deeply

personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In the big picture,

at the end of the day, does anything else really matter?

As a Steward, we experience Jesus’ love and long to share

it by giving our time, sharing our gifts and talents, and

providing from our monetary resources for our neighbor

next door, across town, across the country or across the

globe. Jesus’ love knows no limits or geographical

boundaries.

Are you willing to sacrifice your time, your money,

yourself, to serve Christ in the many faces of our world’s

poor and lonely, abandoned and forgotten?

“Doing the Will of God: Not only sharing the resources

that he [Christian] has, whether material or spiritual, but

giving the one thing that God has given him as his very

own: his life.”1

Sin embargo, preguntas: "¿Qué es la corresponsabilidad?"

¿Es un ministerio dentro de nuestra Iglesia, nuestra comuni-

dad parroquial? No.

¿Es un programa que me enseña sobre la Biblia o las Escritu-

ras o cómo ser un mejor Católico? No.

¿Es un servicio disponible a través de nuestra parroquia para

ayudar a los necesitados, particularmente con necesidades

espirituales? No.

La corresponsabilidad no es un ministerio, un programa o un

servicio. Sin embargo, si está involucrado en el ministerio

parroquial, estudia la Biblia y las lecturas diarias de las Es-

crituras, se esfuerza por ser un "mejor" católico y trabaja

para servir las necesidades de nuestra parroquia y comunidad

local, la corresponsabilidad se puede entender mejor.

La corresponsabilidad es una forma de vida. Jesús es el

centro de la vida de un corresponsable. Estamos llamados a

ser Sus discípulos, a seguir Sus pasos sin importar el costo.

¿Es fácil? No, no siempre es fácil. Pero, ¿fue la vida de Jesús

fácil?

¿Una forma de vida de corresponsabilidad me permitirá tener

todas las cosas que son importantes en mi vida? No lo sé;

¿que es importante para ti? Una forma de vida de correspon-

sabilidad le proporcionará lo que realmente necesita en esta

vida, así como una relación profundamente personal con Je-

sucristo. En general, al final del día, ¿algo más realmente

importa?

Como Corresponsable, experimentamos el amor de Jesús y

anhelamos compartirlo dando nuestro tiempo, compartiendo

nuestros dones y talentos, y brindando, desde nuestros recur-

sos monetarios, a nuestro vecino de al lado, al otro lado de la

ciudad, en todo el país o en todo el mundo. El amor de Jesús

no conoce límites ni fronteras geográficas.

¿Estás dispuesto a sacrificar tu tiempo, tu dinero, a ti mismo,

para servir a Cristo en las muchas caras de los pobres y soli-

tarios de nuestro mundo, abandonados y olvidados?

"Hacer la voluntad de Dios: no solo compartir los recursos

que tiene [cristiano], ya sea materiales o espirituales, sino

dar lo que Dios le ha dado como propio: su vida" 1.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time I Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

The Gospel of Saint Mark illustrates Jesus’

closeness to the sick. From the beginning of

His public life, after He calls His disciples,

He begins to cure the sick. Jesus heals the ill

and weak everywhere: in the synagogue, in the houses, in

the streets and the open air. He offers respite at all times: at

noon, at nightfall, at dawn. His compassion and healing of

the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God.

These actions epitomize God’s love for the suffering human

being. When illness and death hover over us, we can only

ask to be with the God who can heal us from inside, to

approach the cross of the Risen One and find in Him the

purpose of our own lives.

Even what we cannot understand in the blackness of pain

has meaning. Jesus approaches the patient and not only

brings physical health, but also offers spiritual health by

constantly inviting us to discover life.

A hospital is one of the best places to practice spiritual

exercises. When I visit a hospital, I always look for God in

the hiding places of the eyes and in the hours of hope. I look

at a sick person in bed, and know that I will occupy that

place one day.

It is often difficult to accept our own pain and that of others,

but it is better to endure our human suffering with confidence in

the Words of the One who suffered for us.

El Evangelio de san Marcos nos muestra una vida pública

de Jesús que comienza ya desde el primer capítulo, con

una cercanía a los enfermos. Después del bautismo y la

prueba del desierto; después de la llamada a los

discípulos, el Evangelio se sumerge en los encuentros

sanadores del Señor. El reino de Dios llega sanando.

Jesús sana en todas partes a los débiles: cura en la

sinagoga, en las casas, en la calle, en el descampado, al

aire libre… Da la salud en todos los momentos: los

sábados —incluso cuando estaba prohibido hacerlo—, al

mediodía, al anochecer, de madrugada…

Todas estas acciones nos describen a la perfección la

búsqueda constante de Dios al ser humano doliente. En

nuestro mundo los personajes cambian, pero la realidad

es siempre la misma. La enfermedad y la muerte siempre

nos están rondando y sólo nos queda preguntarnos si nos

dejamos encontrar con el Dios que nos cura por dentro…

Jesús se nos acerca hoy para decirnos que incluso en lo

que no entendemos en las negruras del dolor tiene un

sentido. La tarea del cristiano es acercarse a la cruz y a la

tumba del resucitado y encontrar en Él el sentido de lo

que vivimos.

Jesús se acerca al enfermo y le lleva no sólo la salud

física sino también la constante invitación a descubrir la

Vida. Es el Señor que nos libera del sin sentido y del

absurdo del mundo.

Cuando visito un hospital siempre busco a Dios en los

escondrijos de las miradas y en las horas de la esperanza.

Miro una cama con un enfermo y siento que seré yo

quien un día ocupe ese sitio… Un hospital es uno de los

mejores lugares que conozco para hacer ejercicios

espirituales…

No les niego que muchas veces se me hace difícil aceptar

mi dolor y el de los otros, pero creo que es mejor llevar

mi miseria humana a cuestas, teniendo confianza en las

Palabras de quien más sufrió por mí…

Peter’s is protected by a wall of bulletproof glass and can

only be viewed from one side, at a distance, in a space

that is crowded with tourists. These barriers make it

difficult to see nuanced details, like Michelangelo’s bold

signature on Mary’s sash, and to absorb the full artistic

and spiritual impact of the work.

Here in St. George, DSU has created a quiet, light-filled

setting for its precious gift. The experience of viewing the

Pieta in this intimate space, at close quarters, to stand

within a few feet and view it from all sides—from the

graceful folds of Mary’s robes, to the lifeless muscles of

Jesus' body, the luminous expression on Mary's face, and

exquisite gesture of surrender in her uplifted hand—was

deeply moving and inspiring for all of us. One can only

wonder how, more than 500 years ago, the 24-year old

Michelangelo could have chiseled from a solid block of

marble such an exquisitely detailed work of art. It is a

sublime expression of unfathomable sorrow through

eternal beauty.

Every woman of our parish is a member of the

Women’s Group and welcome to join our activities.

Ladies, please come to our next meeting at 6:30 pm on

February 6 in Kuzy Hall or our luncheons at 1 pm on

the second Tuesday of each month at Harmon’s in

Santa Clara.

The Pieta will be available for public viewing beginning

February 17, from 10 am to 6 pm Monday through

Saturday and from 2 pm to 6 pm on Sunday. The

Museum is located inside the Eccles Fine Arts Center at

DSU, on the corner of S 700 East (S. University Ave.)

and E 100 South.

Everyday Stewardship

Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments

Sometimes we can feel like we are living the life of Job:

everything is going wrong all at the same time. Everyone

finds himself or herself in a valley once in awhile. How

we got there is not nearly as important as how are we

going to get out.

Everyday stewards are called to be grateful for all things,

large and small. It is easier to be grateful for obvious

things like family, health, and life itself, than it is to look

for the ordinary gifts in our life. When we cultivate a

sense of wonder and thankfulness for the many little

things in life we find ourselves more resilient in times of

trial. We can look out our window and see all those gifts

in creation. We can look around our home and see all the

things people take too easily for granted. Imagine life

without some of the simplest things like clothing, warmth,

water, and furniture. There are people in this world that

long for all of those things. But God has given them for

your benefit and for you to share with others.

Before Lent begins in a couple weeks, take the time to

create a list of at least 10 things that you normally take for

granted. Keep that list handy and maybe add to it from

time-to-time. When life seems hard and that cloud seems

to hang over our heads, bring out the list and let

gratefulness lift you up and out of your plight so that once

again you can be about your Father's work.
