Gloria in Excelsis S 280

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Word of God Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Par'thians and Medes and E'lamites and residents of Mesopota'mia, Judea and Cappado'cia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phryg'ia and Pamphyl'ia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre'ne, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14 But Peter, * standing with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 yes, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;

20 the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and manifest day.

21 And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Psalm 104:25-35, 37 Benedic, anima mea

25 O LORD, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.

29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; * may the LORD rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the LORD.

37 37 Bless the LORD, O my soul. * Hallelujah!

The Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 Paul said, “Therefore no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in

every one. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. Gradual Hymn Abbot’s Leigh Hymn 511 1 Holy Spirit, ever living as the Church’s very life; Holy Spirit, ever striving through her in a ceaseless strife; Holy Spirit, ever forming in the Church the mind of Christ; thee we praise with endless worship for thy fruits and gifts unpriced. 2 Holy Spirit, ever working through the Church’s ministry; quickening, strengthening, and absolving, setting captive sinners free; Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age, and soul to soul, in a fellowship unending thee we worship and extol.

The Alleluia Verse

The Gospel: John 7:37-39 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. 38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. The Sermon “The Mission Continues!” Father Eaton The Nicene Creed p. 358 Prayers of the People

The Prayers of the People

Dear friends, blessed with the gifts of the Spirit, we each make the good news known in our words and works of mercy, and gathered together in the power of the Spirit we offer our intercessions and petitions to God . Let us pray as one for the needs, the concerns, the hopes and the healing of the Church and the world.

Litanist

Deacon or other leader For peace from on high, for our salvation, and our baptism in the Spirit.

After this and each of the biddings that follow, the Deacon says Lord, hear us. People Come, Holy Spirit, come. We give thanks for this holy gathering and for those who enter with faith, reverence, and fear of God.

We pray for the whole human family. May the Spirit of love change every heart from the stone of indifference to the flesh of mercy.

For Daniel our bishop and the presbyters, the deacons and all who minister in Christ, and for all the holy people of God.

We pray for Christian communities around the world. May the early Church, empowered on Pentecost, be for all believers a model of life laid open to the Spirit of God.

Page 7: Saint George’s Episcopal Church · 5/31/2020  · Saint George’s Episcopal Church . Belleville, Illinois . The Day of Pentecost . May 31, 2020

We pray for a new spirit of reconciliation in our nation. May we find the way to own our past and work for a future in which all have their share in liberty and justice.

We pray for all the nations struggling with the threat and reality of the coronavirus; may their economies recover, their national morale rebound, and may these call forth a new spirit of active worldwide solidarity.

We pray for all who have lost jobs and livelihoods in every industry due to economy shutdowns. May their hardships be eased by the response of our society at large, and in our closer community, providing as we are able.

We pray for students and teachers at every level of the education system. May they manage the resumption of work with wisdom, confidence and enthusiasm.

We pray for ourselves, our families, and those we love [time for petitions said aloud].

We pray for the recently deceased, . . . , and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time. May they be raised up in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Remembering the Apostles and all those gathered on Pentecost, for the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ.

Celebrant Blessed are you, O Lord our God, for you transform our lives and makes us new:

Come, O Holy Spirit. Come as Holy Fire and burn in us, come as Holy Wind and cleanse us within, come as Holy Light and lead us in the darkness, come as Holy Truth and dispel our ignorance, come as Holy Power and enable our weakness, come as Holy Life and dwell in us. Convict us, convert us, consecrate us, until we are set free from the service of ourselves, to be your servants to the world. Amen.

The Commissioning and Admission for Ministry: Interim Rector, and Mission Leadership Team (MLT),

The Congregation stands after the Prayers of the People; the Senior Warden stands at the Sanctuary Gate, facing the People, and the Interim Rector, standing before him with the Junior Warden and MLT members, distanced appropriately

The Senior Warden shall say

Members of St. George’s Parish, Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, we are all baptized by the one Spirit into one Body, and given gifts for a variety of ministries for the common good. Our purpose is to commission and admit these persons to a special ministry to which they have been called and elected. We begin with our Interim Rector.

The Presentation of the Interim Rector Senior Warden

I present to you, St. George’s, The Reverend Robert G. Eaton, to be commissioned as Interim Rector, and Co-President of the Mission Leadership Team (MLT). Junior Warden

Asking on behalf of the congregation, was he, with prayer and thorough consideration, duly selected by the MLT, and has he received the Bishop’s approval to serve in this capacity in the diocese?

Senior Warden Yeah, verily.

Lector

Hear the words addressed to Timothy: “My son set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity … Give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gifts that are in you … Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress ...” (1 Timothy 4:1,12f, NRSV)

The Congregation being seated, the Wardens make their examination:

Junior Warden Father Eaton, in the presence of this congregation will you commit yourself to this called trust and responsibility, and promise to discharge your duties in harmony with the Rules and Order of this Church?

Page 9: Saint George’s Episcopal Church · 5/31/2020  · Saint George’s Episcopal Church . Belleville, Illinois . The Day of Pentecost . May 31, 2020

Interim Rector I will, and I ask God to help me.

Junior Warden Will you covenant to so minister with us during this interim that we are able to value the past, plan for the future and minister in the present? And will you agree not to present yourself as a candidate for the position of permanent Rector?

Interim Rector I will, and I ask God to help me; I will not even hint at presenting myself as a candidate.

Senior Warden And you, people of God, both present in person and those observing on the internet, will you receive this person, sent by God to serve God’s people with the Gospel of hope and salvation in this time of transition? Will you pray for him and for his family, help and honor him for his work’s sake, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ?

Congregation We will.

The Senior Warden and members of the Mission Leadership Team, in lieu of laying hands on the Interim, stretch out a hand toward the Interim saying

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and of this congregation, we commit to you the office and position of Interim Rector and Vestry Co-President for St. George’s Parish. Amen.

The Admission and Blessing of Wardens and MLT Members

(Including those not able to attend, along with the Offices of Clerk and Treasurer) The Priest shall stand at the Chancel Gate, facing the People, the Senior Warden and the present Mission Leadership Team standing before him.

Priest Are the persons whom you present duly prepared by a commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord, regular attendance at Church, and knowledge of their duties, to exercise their ministry to the honor of God and the edifying of the Church?

Senior Warden I believe them so to be.

The Examination The Priest, addressing the Candidates, shall say Disciples of Jesus Christ, who have accepted the opportunity to be admitted to a ministry in this Church, are you convinced that the work of this ministry is so important that, while you are engaged in this work, you will be diligent in performing the same? Answer I am so convinced. Interim Rector Will you try faithfully and reverently to execute the duties of your Office to the best of your ability, as serving the Lord?

Answer I will try to do so.

Interim Rector Will you strive to live in accordance with the sacredness of your Office?

Answer I will so strive, the Lord being my helper.

Interim Rector May God guide and bless you in the doing of this work. Then the following portion of Psalm 100, Jubilate Deo, shall be said by all. O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; * serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; * we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. A Lector reads from Numbers 11:16.

“THE Lord said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be elders of the people, and officers over them … And I will take of the spirit which is upon you, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone.”

The Ministration of Communion

For those who are watching this service as a live stream, during communion, you are welcome to pray the Prayer for Spiritual Communion. Prayer for Spiritual Communion O Jesus Christ, Son of God, lover of my soul: as I watch from afar while others receive the Blessed Sacrament, and as I desire to be in union, O Lord, with the faithful at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I thus present to you my soul and body with the heartfelt wish that I may always be united to you. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I make my humble request of you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, and I embrace you with all the affections of my soul. I believe that it is your will that nothing should ever separate your love from me; that is my desire, as well. Let it be so now. May I live and die in your love. Thank you, O loving and gracious Lord Jesus, for hearing my prayer and answering it. Amen. Communion Hymn Bridegroom Hymn 513 1 Like the murmur of the dove’s song, like the challenge of her flight, like the vigor of the wind’s rush, like the new flame’s eager might: come, Holy Spirit, come. 2 To the members of Christ’s Body, to the branches of the Vine, to the Church in faith assembled, to her midst as gift and sign: come, Holy Spirit, come. 3 With the healing of division, with the ceaseless voice of prayer, with the power to love and witness, with the peace beyond compare: come, Holy Spirit, come.

Post-Communion Prayer of Thanksgiving p. 365 Celebrant and People Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessing for the Day of Pentecost May Almighty God, who enlightened the minds of the disciples by pouring out upon them the Holy Spirit, make you rich with his blessing, that you may abound more and more in that Spirit for ever. Amen.

May God, who sent the Holy Spirit as a flame of fire that rested upon heads of the disciples, burn out all evil from your hearts, and make them shine with the pure light of his presence. Amen.

May God, who by the Holy Spirit caused those of many tongues to proclaim Jesus as Lord, strengthen your faith and send you out to bear witness to him in word and deed. Amen. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen. Dismissal
