STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves, for my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) Stewards are ‘committed’ to Christ, the fifth of the 6 Characteristics of an Everyday Steward. Being committed as a Steward means persevering daily in a way of life acknowledging everything belongs to God. Every breath we take, our family, work and play, our money, our entire life belongs to God; He is the author of that life. He freely gives us life and asks only that we love Him in return and share our life with others. We share our valuable time, perhaps with someone who is lonely, feeling isolated. We share our talent, our giftedness, in the unique manner by which we know how to give back to God by giving to others. We share our treasure as many of you have so generously done during this time of illness and uncertainty. The Sacrament of Marriage is filled with many commitments. Embarking upon the journey of wedded bliss, when the two become one, we can develop doubts. Labors and burdens may have been encountered when we felt the yoke was anything but easy or the burden light. We may have prayed continually at times wondering if God was truly hearing our words, and even more, if He would see fit to answer our prayers. Gloria Vanacore, author of How Could I Not Believe? The Spiritual Journey of a True American Family, says from her wedding day forward, she experienced disappointments, troublesome years and desperate hours. She recounts may strange experiences also took place. One of those first strange experiences was probably the day of her wedding, September 28, 1947. She and her husband were driving from Brooklyn, New York to Washington, D.C. for their honeymoon. She remembers feeling “chic” in her going away outfit – blue suit and matching pillbox hat. As they were crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, he said to her, “I don’t like that hat.” With that, he opened the car window, pulled the hat off her head and threw it into the Hudson River! Gloria describes this as the first disaster. They enjoyed six children, and their marriage endured from 1947-2002. “Jesus is the answer to all our questions, no matter what our age or state of life. … truth to young people … searching for deeper meaning and security. He restores the dignity and moral center of those who are looking for life and see only death.”1 He IS the Way! 1Healing Promises: The Essential Guide to the Sacred Heart by Anne Costa

Back in the days when most people thought the world was flat and the stars were small lights fixed in the sky, the proof of such things was obvious: to the eye the world looked flat and to the eye the stars are small. Seeing is believing. It wasn’t until we were

able to look at the world with something more than human eyes that we began to suspect that the world wasn’t flat and that there was more to stars than a glance suggested. When some people see the words of this weekend’s second reading, it seems obvious that spirit is good and flesh is bad. That’s what the words say. Seeing is believing. But the words also say something else, and that something calls into question what a first glance confirmed. The middle of the second reading says: “If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.” Why would the good spirit go out of its way to give us again our mortal bodies of flesh if they are in fact bad? The second reading comes from Paul’s letter to the Romans and Paul knew the customs of the Jews well from the days Paul was a Pharisee. Jews who studied Scriptures knew these Scriptures inside and out. They would not have missed the words at the end of Genesis 1 where “God looked at everything he made, and he found it very good.” That includes our bodies of flesh. As far as we can tell, the whole idea that the body is bad and the spirit is good is not a Hebrew idea at all; it comes from Greek thought and it was not well accepted in the Early Church. To summarize, God “from the beginning of time made at once out of nothing both orders of creatures, the spiritual and the corporeal, that is, the angelic and the earthly, and then the human creature, who as it were shares both orders, being composed of spirit and body (CCC #327).” But “flesh” is still something to avoid in the second reading. That’s because “flesh” in this context means a human life lived primarily materially and ignoring the spiritual. This is not good for humanity. “Spirit” means that neither the spiritual nor the material is ignored and that the spirit created the material in the beginning. “Spirit” is good for body and soul.
