FR. LOMBARDI SJ: JUBILEE OF MERCY NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER
Now is no time to stop plans for the Year of Mercy. In the wake of the deadly terror attacks in Paris on
Friday, in which at least 128 people were killed, the Director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Fr. Federico
Lombardi, SJ, told Vatican Radio that the Holy Year is a message of mercy to drive out fear.
“In these sad days,” said Fr. Lombardi, “in which murderous violence has reared its insane, horrible head,
many wonder how to respond. Some people are already asking how to live the experience of these last days of
waiting before the opening of the Jubilee [of Mercy].” Fr. Lombardi went on to say, “Be on guard: these murder-
ers, possessed by a senseless hatred, are called ‘terrorists’ precisely because they want to spread terror. If we let
ourselves be frightened, they will have already reached their first objective. This, then, is one more reason
to resist with determination and courage the temptation to fear.”
In this, concluded Fr. Lombardi, “Pope Francis guides us and invites us to trust in the Spirit of the
Lord, who accompanies us.”
Below, please find Fr. Lombardi’s full statement, in English
In these sad days, in which murderous violence has reared its insane, horrible head, many wonder how to
respond. Some people are already asking how to live the experience of these last days of waiting before the open-
ing of the Jubilee [of Mercy]. Be on guard: these murderers, possessed by a senseless hatred, are called
‘terrorists’ precisely because they want to spread terror. If we let ourselves be frightened, they will have already
reached their first objective. This, then, is one more reason to resist with determination and courage the tempta-
tion to fear.
It goes without saying that we must be cautious, and not irresponsible: we must take precautions that are
reasonable. Nevertheless, we must go on living by building peace and mutual trust. So I would say that the Jubi-
lee of Mercy shows itself even more necessary. A message of mercy, that love of God which leads to mutual
love and reconciliation. This is precisely the answer we must give in times of temptation to mistrust.
St. John Paul II said that the message of mercy was the great response of God and of believers in the dark
and horrible time of the Second World War, which saw massacres carried out by totalitarian regimes, and the
spread of hatred among peoples and persons.
Today, too, when Pope Francis speaks of a third world war being fought piecemeal, there is need for a
message of mercy to make us capable of building bridges, and, in spite of everything, to have the courage of love.
This is, therefore, no time to give up the Jubilee, or to be afraid. We need the Jubilee more than ever. We
have to live with prudent intelligence, but also with courage and spiritual élan, continuing to look to the future
with hope, despite the attacks of hatred. Pope Francis guides us and invites us to trust in the Spirit of the Lord
who accompanies us.

From Pope Francis
As Christians, we are called to imitate the
Good Shepherd and to help families
experiencing difficulties.
POPE FRANCIS: CONDOLENCES TO FRANCE AFTER TERROR ATTACKS
Pope Francis has sent a telegram to Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, Archbishop of Paris, assuring vic-
tims, their families and emergency personnel that he is united with them in prayer.
Signed by the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the telegram condemns this
and all acts of violence, and asks God to inspire thoughts of peace and solidarity.
Below, please find Vatican Radio’s English translation of the telegram:
Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, Archbishop of Paris
Informed of the horrific terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris and at the Stade de France, killing a
great number of people and wounding many others, His Holiness Pope Francis joins in prayer with the suffer-
ing of families affected by the drama and the pain of the French people. He invokes God, Father of mercy,
asking that He welcome the victims into the peace of His light and bring comfort and hope to the injured and
their families. He assures them, and all of the personnel participating in aid efforts, of his spiritual closeness.
Once again, the Holy Father vigorously condemns violence, which cannot solve anything, and he asks God to
inspire thoughts of peace and solidarity in all and to impart on families in this trial and on all of the French
people, the abundance of His Blessings.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin
Secretary of State of His Holiness
