This Lent’s Adult Program is based on Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. We’ll be

exploring how the characters portray grace, poverty, justice, love and redemp-

tion, so plan on joining us! Sessions have begun but it is not too late to join us. We have copies of the movie available for those who missed the pre-class showing. You can pick it up at class or at the office. Soup is served on Thursday evening after mass and coffee and pastries are served on Friday morning af-ter mass.

Lent has begun. We have extra activities planned and hope you will deepen your Lenten experience by joining us as often as you can:

Mass on Thursday night 6 PM (T) Adult Scripture Study: Les Miserables Thursday

evening or Friday morning (T/F) Stations of the Cross, Fridays 3 PM (F)

You will get out of Easter what you put into Lent!

It is not too late: On Ash Wednesday we took up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the Church in more than 20 countries that are still

struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catech-esis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection next week. More information can be found at www.ysccb.org/ccee.

Stations of the Cross—We invite you to join us every Friday during Lent at 3 PM in Frank-lin. The Stations of the Cross are a series of pictures or images that represent certain scenes in the Passion of Christ. They are now found in almost every church or chapel. The number of stations has varied throughout their history but

fourteen are now the norm. The Stations are meant to help people make a spiritual pilgrimage to the chief scenes of Christ's sufferings and death, and this has be-come one of the most popular Catholic devotions in the season of Lent. The origin of the devotion may be traced to the Holy Land where Jesus experienced His passion, death and resurrection. In Jerusalem these important sites were reverently marked out from the earliest times and became an important destination for pilgrims ever since the days of Constantine. In conclusion it may be said that the Stations of the Cross is one of the richest devotions which enables us to more literally obey Christ's command to take up our cross and follow Him.

As you know, we do not cancel Masses due to inclement weather. However, snowstorms hurt us two ways: they are expensive to clear and we lose about $2000.00 in the collection. When you can’t make it to Mass because of the weather, please try to send us your ‘missing’ contri-bution. During the winter, we need every penny!

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for March - Catholics in China: We Pray that the Church in Chi-na may persevere in its faithfulness to the Gospel and grow in unity.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Today’s Temptations! I’ve never been tempted to turn stones into bread, jump off the church roof or en-gage in devil worship, but I can still relate to the tempta-tions Jesus rejected 2000 years ago. That’s because the temptations we face today are quite similar to the ones Jesus faced. Like Him, we struggle with our appetites (overeating, alcohol, drugs, porn, gambling, etc.) and we often look for the easy way out (we lie, cheat or take ad-vantage of others). Like Jesus, we’ve been tempted to test God with unrealistic demands: give us a cure for cancer, stop global warming, put an end to wars, etc. (things that God would consider our responsibility) or selfish requests: cure grandma or let me win the lottery. And how many times have we been tempted to worship other gods (like youth, fame, money, power and com-fort). Isn’t it remarkable that after 40 days of fasting, Je-sus could resist that food temptation? That, facing a

three-year journey that would lead to the cross, He didn’t need reassurance that He was doing God’s will? That, knowing full well the great service He was doing for hu-manity, He didn’t think of himself as special or worthy of special treatment. Had we been in his place, I don’t think any of us would have so summarily resisted all three temptations. Perhaps, this lent, we could zero in on one of the three (material desires, need to manipulate God or the urge to distance ourselves from God) and work at it. God does not expect us to become saints overnight but He’d like us to use these 40 days to chip away at the many ways the devil still gets the best of us. Many people are tempted to do nothing special this year; after all, lent will be back next spring -but will they?

Franklin Assembly #638 Meets last Monday @ 7:30PM.

Rice Bowls were in last week’s bulletin. There are extras at the church doors. SAC-RIFICE: (Rice Bowls) is one of the ways we can discipline our lives as we help oth-ers. The Lord invites us to use our time,

talent and treasure to release our attachment to the ma-terial world and help others minimize their dependence on it. What we “give up” for Lent is not as important as to whom we give it and why.

Winter Precautions WINTER is not over yet! Please be pru-dent when deciding to travel to Mass and continue to use caution when entering the

buildings. Please leave handicap parking for those who need it!

Free tax preparation for lower income (less than $66,000) and senior citizens at the Betsy Rowell Community Center. Call 211 to make an appointment.

Reminder to all travelers to Amish Land and Gettysburg this summer. We will be mailing all deposits into White Star March 25. After that time your deposit is no longer refundable. Also, if you are planning on purchasing travel insurance

please be sure you do that before that date. We would also like to remind you when making checks out for the trip please make them payable to ‘Raymond Gagnon (Tours)’. Final payments will be due by May 01. There are 89 travelers signed up for this trip.

Adult Liturgical Ministers: we are planning a ‘meatless’ potluck dinner on Friday, March 13 at 6 PM in the rectory in Franklin. We hope that if you are one of our adult servers, lectors, or Eucharistic Ministers that you will plan to join us. Just bring a meatless pot-luck ( it is a Friday in Lent) or a dessert to share. It would help if you could let us know what you plan to bring. Please call Christine Dzujna at 934-7163 or call the office at 934-5013. This is a great opportunity to get to know the people we are serving with, put a face to the person we are calling for a replacement.

The Deanery Reconciliation Service in Laconia is March 22 at 1:30 not March 8th as announced in the Lent flyer.
