CALLED TO BE WITNESSES Thomas probably would be a good man to have in your corner in a modern-day courtroom. Even though he was willing to follow Jesus to death (John 11:16), he’s not going to go out into the world now and attempt to give witness to the risen Christ when all he has at his disposal is hearsay evidence from the other apostles. No, he wants immediate evidence, a hands-on experience of Christ risen and present. The risen Christ ultimately provides Thomas with the experience and evidence he needs. Many of us, when we struggle with our faith or our belief, can identify with Thomas. But even when our faith is in relatively solid shape, we encounter people who are a bit like Thomas, who won’t believe unless they are given credible experience of the risen Christ. We, then, are called to be witnesses. Like Christ, we cannot be ashamed to show the woundedness of the Body of Christ, the Church. We must even allow others to probe and examine the wounds. But we must also greet them with “Peace” and know that, in the glorious everlasting life of Christ risen from the dead, our wounds are not our final destiny. Our final joy is life transformed for eternity.

N ews from the Padre/ No ticias de N uestro Sacerdote Attending Mass on Easter Sunday is certainly a different experience than participating in an ordinary Sunday liturgy. For those who are in the pews every Sunday, the question that pops into our mind is, “Where did all of these people come from?” As a pastor, I am also forced to ask myself the most basic question of all, “What can our parish community do to encourage these inactive, fallen-away, former or ex-Catholics who have drifted away for some reason, to get them re-involved in our parish activities before next Christmas –before they fall permanently into the category coined as “CEO” Catholics or Christmas and Easter Only Catholics. However we choose to label them, there are millions of Catholics who don’t attend Mass on a regular basis. The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA),
located at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., offers the widest and best sample of Catholic Mass attendance. Twenty-three percent of all Catholics claim to attend Mass weekly; another 21% claim to attend at least monthly. This means that 56% of Catholics do not attend Mass with any regularity. Molly Worthen, a religious historian, notes that the United States has seen many ebbs and flows in religious participation; the current rates are similar to the time prior to the Civil War. Worthen writes in the New York Times, “77% still identify as Christians and 69% say they are ‘very’ or ‘moderately’ religious.” If this is true, we’ve still got something to work with. With the gift of faith, the church’s diminishment can be viewed as an incredible and golden opportunity to ask yet another serious question. Simply put: “What is the Church for?” Historically, we would have answered that question in various ways: for decades in this country, the church’s purpose was to feed, teach and nurse, leave a legacy of churches, schools and hospitals built to nurture, educate and heal generations of poor immigrants. Bishop John Buckley of Ireland, while probably not in agreement with all, states: “...the central tenets of Catholicism were not established as rules of membership. These are all ideals that we must try to live up to. If you do not meet all these ideals, it does not mean that you cannot take your place at the table the Lord has prepared for you. The church is a refuge for the weak, not a home for the perfect,” a loving home meant to be filled and overflowing with the imperfections that each of us brings to that same table. A home for all, on Easter and every day. I loved that our Church overflowed into the gathering area on Easter weekend. What a witness to the truth that the Easter Story has real meaning and continues to capture people’s imagination. If we can figure out what the pull was to get people to come to church this past week, then we can use that as a starting point for helping them look more deeply at their own experience. We can be much better in teaching, converting, and inviting others to an active and engaged participation in the life of the Church, involvement that can help make a real difference in a person’s daily life. The account of the Resurrection does not just have meaning for a single moment, but rather calls for a commitment. Each of us can see ourselves making a commitment to be a disciple—one who “goes out into the world,” as Pope Francis stated in his Easter homily. We could, of course, just hunker down and lament the loss of faith within our community—hiding out in the proverbial Upper Room. That is, after all, what some of Jesus’ disciples did. But, it is not our charism to hide. Our charism is to welcome. Hospitality—that sense of genuine and loving welcoming—must continue to be a major touch point in the Stewardship of our Church today. These practices cannot become just another catch phrase. They must be the way we live our Catholic Christianity. Times have changed, and for better or worse, other institutions have taken on the tasks of education and health care. I believe that American Catholics face far less discrimination than our grandparents did, and have ultimately become more inclusive and welcoming. Those same changing times have also shown that this weekend’s liturgies won’t likely be witness to another “standing room only” weekend. We need to understand that as Catholics, we are called to be committed disciples. Disciples who don’t hide, but rather, “go out into the world to preach the Good News.” Easter Blessings...Alleluia! Alleluia!

Feliz Pascua... ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!

SMALL CHURCH COMMUNITY UPDATE: Many Catholics have never openly shared their faith with anyone, or have little or no practice of speaking about their faith in personal terms. One of the fruits of being part of a Small Church Community group is that we are better enabled to share our faith with others, something we are clearly called to do.
You are invited to come to our Small Church Community gathering on Wednesday, April 17th, from 7-8:45 p.m. at Sharon and Bruce's home. We reflect on the Sunday Scriptures, faith-share on what the passage says to us personally, take time to pray for one another and other intentions, then enjoy fellowship with coffee and cookies. All are welcome! For more info please call Sharon Hatch 775-832-2616.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
The Catholic Home Missions Appeals help support basic pastoral and formation programs for four out of every ten dioceses in the United States. The Diocese of Reno is one of the dioceses that has received grants from this fund. With Home Missions grants, we can continue supplying the help needed. The Home Missions Appeal helps ease struggles through grants to people in the Mission Dioceses who would not be able to afford services such as adult faith formation and education for leaders to attend to the unique needs of their faith communities. Please be generous to this year’s Appeal and help strengthen not only the Church at home, but throughout the country. You support truly makes a difference. Thank you!
Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo

Issues of Peace and Justice From the Life, Peace and Justice Commission (April 7 bulletin)
“Peace be with you.” Three times Jesus repeats this in today’s gospel. This salutation seems to be more than just a friendly greeting of the Lord, as is indicated by this fuller statement, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church states: “Peace is a value and a universal duty.” “Peace is the fruit of justice.” “Peace is also the fruit of love.” “Peace is built up day after day in the pursuit of an order willed by God and can flourish only when all recognize that everyone is responsible for promoting it. To prevent conflicts and violence, it is absolutely necessary that peace begin to take root as a value rooted deep within the heart of every person. In this way it can spread to families and to the different associations within society until the whole of the political community is involved. In a climate permeated with harmony and respect for justice, an authentic culture of peace can grow and can even pervade the entire international community. Peace is, consequently, the fruit of ‘that harmony structured into human society by its Divine Founder and which must be actualized by people as they aspire for ever greater justice.’ Such an ideal of peace ‘cannot be obtained on earth unless the welfare of man is safeguarded and people freely and trustingly share with one another the riches of their minds and their talents.’” (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, #494 & #495.)
