Dear Folks, I very much want to thank all of you for your kind reception this past week. The Knights were most helpful for helping me and golden retriever, Rex, move in to the rectory. With that we are off to the races. Please know if there any wild rumors running fast and furious… I’ll start them. Fr. John Heisler is one of the great priests of the diocese and very creative in his insights. He has a mind that never quits and is enhanced with a tremendous sense of humor. All expressed with a very humble presenta-tion. There is none better than Fr. Heisler. Soon Father will take up his additional duties at the Arlington Tribunal. He will be scheduled to be in the chancery offices two days each week. God bless him. As the kids used to say, “He will be taxed to the max” with his responsibilities. I applaud that. In horse country there is a common sense that admonishes, when you go to the races you don’t leave your prize horse home in the barn. Let the good priest run.Upcoming events: Starting Monday November 25 we will have daily 6:30am Mass… except Thanksgiving. All other weekdays from then on will start at 6:30am. The First Friday 7pm Mass will cease so we stay with two Masses a day. There should be no other modifications in the expected Mass schedules. Starting Sunday December 1st we will have Confessions, one half hour, in the chapel, before all the Sunday Masses. The Confessions will end just before Mass starts so the single priest confessor can clear the chapel for those who treat it like a cry room for the future choir members… we may call it the “Grand Bawl Room.” Hmm. Just kidding. This week an architect will review the possibility setting two confessionals inside the Church. When completed we should have two priests hearing Confessions before each Mass and not be dependent on the chapel. Mrs. Amy Harrison is on the hunt for a secretary in the parish offices. I have reminded her that we need “Godmoth-ers” at the front desk and not “gunslingers” as I have seen in some of my past assignments. The front desk may be the hardest duty in the parish depending on those calling in to vent about the priests homilies or some other mundane issues. But I digress. The great Knights of Columbus in the parish have offered to procure an angel statue for a shrine for the children who have died. It should go in the Narthex, at the entrance of the church. All who would like a tag set in place for their loved ones should contact Mrs. Janice Rees in the Religious Ed Office or write to me. ([email protected]). Of course, for anonym-ity, you can also tell me in the Confessional. Options for names should be similar to: Susan Smith; Smith Child; Child of God. The last allowing for those involving abortions. Please stay tuned for a section of the wall, in the Narthex, where pictures honoring those parishioners who have entered Holy Orders and Religious life as priests, deacons, seminarians, and religious may be set in place. Let us never tire of praying

for vocations. Please contact Mrs. Janice Rees in the Religious Ed Office if you have any names and pictures to go on the wall. In addition to her duties as Coordinator of Religious Education, I have asked Mrs. Rees to take charge of the parish library. I have a set of the Catholic Encyclopedia to offer the library. She will also set up a video library with many of the old standard religious movies. Why? You may ask. Because some kids today are coming to us with little or no understanding of the common Bible Stories. The videos should help to give them an introduc-tion to the corporate memory of the Church. Janice has been tasked to come up with the list videos. No, little Virginia, we are not going to allow the “Exorcist” to join the list. We need to have some standards. If you may have some religious DVD’s sitting on your shelves that you may not want please consider donat-ing them to the parish library. God bless you for your kindness. Allow, a good rumor. Somewhere in the coming year I would like to initiate a religious ed program for high school students. Fr. Heisler will teach the 11th and 12th graders and I will take the 9th and 10th. As the first four years of Catholic education are good for the stories, the middle four years for the numbers… of sacraments, Commandments, vices, virtues, etc. The last four years are good for concepts. When it starts prepare to run like the wind. There is much to cover in apologetics. In the coming week, Antonio, one of our maintenance men will deal with the “red shed” adjacent to the rectory. He will complete the boy scout project from last year but putting in door, two windows, and handle on the garage door. He will need to manufacture some sort of mechanism to help offset the heavy door. In the coming Spring we may have electricity set in the shed. Antonio, his wife Maria, and Jerry offer a great mainte-nance staff. We are going to let them run with the creative work. God bless them. We also welcome Mrs. Oliva Gomez as our new house-keeper at the rectory. She will be a welcome addition. She is go-ing to have her hands full in the coming weeks because I asked Emily, the Youth Director if the Kids would please decorate the rectory for Christmas. Oh boy! We will celebrate with hot chocolate and marshmallows and Chef Boy R Heisler’s version of a “S’more.” Please stay tuned. I very much enjoyed meeting the CCD teachers and their students. Rex was a hit with the kids yesterday. I very much like their catechetical books and am encouraged by the enthusiasm of the good teachers. They are all such a great blessing. God bless them all. As today is Tuesday I want to run over and meet the homeschool collective. The lovely mothers have been most kind with their intentions. Yes, God bless them all. Will also reach to RCIA program in the coming weeks. Please let me know if any of our parishioners are in need of as-sistance in seeking Annullments. The door is always open and I am happy to help in any way I can. In addition I am happy to provide instructions for those who missed the RCIA program for scheduling reasons and I will be happy to privately offer the instructions. For all emergency calls you can reach me on the cell phone at: 703-626-8113. Feel free to call any hour of the day or night. If I am away Fr. Heisler will be here. Let us all pray for one another. Colegiate Question: A hard one to start my letters. Who is the only Hispanic mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures? Hint, he was a judge with a twin… from Cordoba, Spain. Father Gould

True Holiday “Spirit”by Susan Pace Gilbert

Sometimes an unsettling world event or unexpected tragedy brings into clear focus what we are truly thankful for, as we begin to count our many blessings. Perhaps the painful loss of a beloved family member or friend causes us to reflect upon the goodness and love which enriched our lives because of them. Their kind words, encouragement and support of our endeavors brought happiness and a positive influence into our daily existence, amid struggles to succeed. We are thankful for the blessings they were for us during our earthly journey. This feeling of thankfulness is celebrat-ed during the feast of Thanksgiving in November. Let’s carry an attitude of gratitude into the season of Advent and think about giving to others, rather than what might be re-ceived at Christmas. “For it is in giving that we receive”, as the peace prayer of Saint Francis so aptly describes in verse. Share your gifts of time and treasure on a cultural outing with an elderly person, perhaps a widow or a widower who is alone because of a recent loss. The first holiday season after the death of a spouse is very difficult and your presence is consoling. After the funeral Mass and burial services are held, people can feel very alone, as the finality of the loss sets in. Family traditions change. There are many good concerts and musical events over the holiday season, such as: free concerts at the Daughters of the American Revolution auditorium in the District of Columbia. It would be a gift of service to invite, transport and accompany a guest to a holiday concert whether there or elsewhere. Local churches have special Christmas con-certs scheduled also. My husband gave me a book entitled: Around the Year with the Von Trapp Family, which includes recipes, songs and ideas for liturgical living, some of which you may wish to incorporate in your own family’s Advent preparations, to make Christmas a more meaningful feast. We give thanks for the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who graced our world with his human presence for 33 years. We have so many fine examples of Catholic Saints who gave lives of service and we should consider giving to oth-ers, especially over the holiday season. The love and kind-ness given to others in action and deed is returned when you least expect it and may need it most. Perhaps making a sweet surprise delivery of home baked goods, as an expression of sympathy during loss would be a charitable act to consider. Think about your talents and how you might share them with others to bring some happiness into their lives. You might frame a picture from an outing, or make a photo card to send for cheer. Singing and playing an instrument at a gathering for the enjoyment of others is a gift. So, when you are making your list and checking it twice, add some “presents” of service for others. Your holiday joy will increase because of the generosity of giving with the true “spirit” of the holiday season, in honor of Christ’s ultimate gift of self to us.

Extra Musicians/Singers for Christmas If you sing or play an instrument and would like to participate in the Christmas Masses, please contact Michael Galdo at [email protected]. The Parish Choir will sing

at the 10:30pm Night Mass on Dec. 24th. We will hold a first rehearsal on Monday, Dec. 2nd from 7pm – 9:30pm. The full schedule of rehearsals includes Wednesday evenings in December 7 – 9 pm and also Monday Dec. 16th, 7-9 pm.

WE NEED YOUR HELPIt is hard to believe that in Loudoun County there are so many children that do not have adequate clothing during the weather. Your Knights of Colum-bus Council for years has attempted

to help with the problem. It is that time of year again and we need the help of our Parish Community. This year between the fundrais-ing that is done and the donation made by your Knights Council we have $1834 to purchase new coats for children in Loudoun County. The coats are given to parent Liaisons in the schools who have identi-fied children who will benefit from the program. A second part of this program involves our council placing a box in the Narthex from this weekend until December 6th for Parishioners to put new and "gently used" Coats. Please remember that we have children in need from Kindergarten to High School. The coats are collected about the same time as the new coats arrive in the mail and both sets are given to the parent liaisons to disburse. Thank you to all who participate and/or send prayers for this program!!!!!!

DIVINE MERCY SAID: “Pray as much as you can for the dying. By your en-treaties, obtain for them trust in My mercy, because they have most need of trust, and have it the least. Be assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in their final moment depends on your prayer. You know the whole abyss of My mercy, so draw upon it for yourself and especially for poor sinners. Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul.” (St. Faustina Diary, 1777)

HOST THE PILGRIM VIRGIN STATUE You can schedule to sign up for hosting the Pilgrim Virgin in your home. Go to saintfrancisparish.org/hosting-the-pilgrim-virgin/ and pick a date. Then just sign up at [email protected] and pick up the statue in the narthex after the Sunday Mass you attend and return it no later than Saturday afternoon for the next person to host our Blessed Mother. Great blessings will come along your way when you invite Our Lady and pray the rosary in your home. She will not be outdone in generosity!
