Sunday, September 29th, 2019 – Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Cycle C Readings: Amos 6: 1a, 4-7, Psalm 146 “Praise the Lord, my soul!”, 1 Timothy 6: 11-16, Luke 16:19-31 The Prophet Amos – Who is he? Amos is one of the Minor Prophets present in the Old Testament, who was very different from the other prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremi-ah, Baruch, Ezekiel, etc. Amos was not a member of the priestly class, he was not a Levite, or even a Doctor of the Law. He was a sheep breeder from Tekoah in Judah, and prophesied in the Northern Kingdom during the time of Jeroboam (786-746 B.C). He gave his ora-cles in Israel at the great cult center of Bethel, and because of his oracles against the king, and because he was against the culture of death that was opposite of God’s commands he was expelled by the priest in charge of the royal sanctuary (Am. 7:10-17) As you read the Book of the Prophet Amos, which contains nine (9) chapters (Am. 1:1---9:15), some readers may think that he inno-vates in the prophecies, however, Amos’ prophecy calls the attention of Israel to return to God. The book of the Prophet Amos is divided in six (6) parts as it follows: I – Introduction (1: 1-2) II – Oracles against Nations (1:3---2:16) III – Threefold summons to hear the Word of God (3:1---5:9) IV – Three Woes (5:7---6:14) V – Symbolic Vision (7:1---9:10) VI – Epilogue: Restoration under Davidic King (9:11-15)

September – Month dedicated to the Sacred Scripture The month of September in the Catholic Church is dedicated to a deeper reading and prayer of the Sacred Scripture. The dedication of this month to the Bible is because one of the great saints of the Church who is considered one of the Church Fathers known as Saint Je-rome, whose name was Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus, who born in 347 and died on September 30th, 420. The life of St. Jerome after his conversion to the Christian Faith was about his involvement in the better translation of the Sacred Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek, to Latin, as known as the Vulgata. It is very interesting to note that 382-405 A.C Jerome dedicated himself not only for translating the Bible and the sacred words, but to immerse himself in the mighty presence of God (Old Testament), in the experience of the healing ministry of Jesus (New Testament), and witness the presence of Jesus and his Church through the preaching of the Apostles (Acts of the Apostles, Letters of Paul, Letter to the Hebrews, the Catholic Letters (Peter, James, John, and Jude) and the book of Revelation. After the translation, he devoted the last 15 years of his life (405-420), writing homilies and explanations of the books present in the Bible. As Christians who profess the Catholic Faith and others from a different Christian tradition, we may be very thankful to St. Jerome on his love of God and his diligence to attain himself in giving to all of us a better translation of the Vulgata permitting us to read the scrip-tures in various known languages of the world. “The Bible has been translated into many languages from the biblical languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. As of Octo-ber 2018, the full Bible has been translated into 683 languages, the New Testament has been translated into an additional 1,534 languages and Bible portions or stories into 1,133 other languages. Thus, at least some portion of the Bible has been translated into 3,350 languages.”

The Bible contains 1.189 chapters, and 31,102 verses, of the total of these verses 23,145 are present in the Old Testament and 7,957 in the New Testament

The Short chapter in the Bible is the Psalm 117 that has only 2 verses The longest chapter in the Bible is the Psalm 119 which contains 176 verses The Psalm 118:8 is the center verse of the whole bible and its verse says: "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in

man."

Septiembre: mes dedicado a la Sagrada Escritura El mes de septiembre en la Iglesia Católica está dedicado a una lectura y oración más profunda de la Sagrada Escritura. La dedicación de este mes a la Biblia se debe a uno de los grandes santos de la Iglesia, considerado uno de los Padres de la Iglesia conocido como San Jerónimo, cuyo nombre era Eusebio Sofronio Jerónimo, quien nació en 347 y murió el 30 de septiembre de 420.
