From the Pastor June 5, 2016

10th Sunday in Ordinary Time - C

To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, I have been giving reflections on the various Mass prayers since early 2011. However, this is the first time since that revision started that

the 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time has NOT fallen in Eastertime, or on Trinity Sunday or Corpus Christi … so it’s the first time I get to reflect on them [we still need to do the 8th and 9th Sunday in Ordinary Time.] I based my oration reflections on the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts. I’m truly amazed at the theological depth and beauty of these prayers; I hope you are, too! And may these reflections help raise up our often dead faith to new life, just as Jesus raised the widow of Nain’s son.

10th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Collect

O God, from whom all good things come, grant that we, who call on you in our need,

may at your prompting discern what is right, and by your guidance do it.

“God Is My Co-Pilot.” While this adage is quite

similar to another old bumper sticker, “Let Go & Let God,” there’s a significant difference between them. For as this oration reminds us,

we have an important role to play in our own spiritual life; we cannot sit back and let God do all the work. First, we must be attentive to all that God provides and entrusts to us, for we are stewards, caretakers of all our gifts and talents -

for which, one day, we will have to give an account.

Then we must be attentive to how - through everyday life and its countless experiences- the Lord is ‘calling’ us to advance His plan by putting into action whatever gifts He gave to us. Again, we cannot forget all our physical, mental,

spiritual, financial gifts -and even life itself - is an underserved gift or grace from God. Finally, we admit our need for the help that God alone can give to help us properly use our gifts in ways that will help build God’s Kingdom on earth.

Perhaps this is why we get into so much trouble

- for we do not rely on divine inspiration to motivate, guide and sustain us. Like Adam and Eve, we ‘go it alone’ - believing we know better

than God. For doesn’t every challenge or problem in today’s world stem from a violation of some divine Commandment or ordinance?

10th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer Over the Offerings

Look kindly upon our service, O Lord, we pray, that what we offer may be an acceptable

oblation to you and lead us to grow in charity.

God Is Watching Us! Sometimes these words

arouse dreadful fear in us … as well they should - when we violate God’s laws or commandments. But when God looks kindly upon our good

deeds, our valiant efforts, our patient endurance, He does so with ‘a nod of approval’ and ‘a smile of acceptance.’ I am not saying God actually ‘moves’ like this … for God is a spirit, with no body; but like the Scriptures, we use

human analogies to better understand how God ‘acts.’

Isn’t that a very pious, positive way to imagine how God ‘sees’ and ‘accepts’ what we do for Him: with a loving, gentle gesture, God acknowledges our offerings, making a mental

note to ‘reward’ us when we finally get to see Him face to face. And by offering what we do in and through the Eucharist, our ‘service’ or ‘works’ become an ‘acceptable oblation’ or sacrificial gift. When we think of it that way,

isn’t it a GREAT thing that God is always watching us?

10th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer after Communion

May your healing work, O Lord, free us, we pray, from doing evil

and lead us to what is right.

The Eucharist Is A Spiritual Remedy. Holy

Communion ‘frees us’ from evil, by fortifying us against temptation. And it ‘leads us to what is right’ by instilling in us Jesus Himself, who then helps us to become His voice, His hands, His love - His very self. In a world that constantly clamors for our attention and labor, our time

and money, we need to tune into a Voice that calls us to what is good and holy, true and eternal. And one of the best places to hear that Voice and do the works of God is through His Church, especially her Sacraments, especially

the Eucharist. So I sign off saying once again: in light of all this, who would ever miss weekly or even daily Mass?

In His holy Name,

Rev. Thomas J. Serafin, KHS

Second Reading: Galatians 1:11-19 Paul proclaims the gospel, not as human, but coming from the revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul continues to acknowledge his own sinfulness and call to grace.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 The gospel continues to recount the miracles and healing powers of Jesus. As Jesus neared the gates to the city of Nain, they came upon a deceased young man who was being carried out of the city. His mother, a widow, and a large crowd accompanying the body, met Jesus on the way. Compassionately, Jesus comforts the weeping mother and restores life to the dead man.

Pilgrimage to Basilica Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

This week about 80 people went on a tour of the magnificent Basilica Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The tour was fascinating and Fr. Tom along with Fr. Michael Kreder, St. Mary’s in Rutherford and Fr. Mark Kreder, St. Justin’s in Toms River assisted by Deacon Paul Santella celebrated Mass at the main altar!

After the tour and Mass, some readers took turns ‘reading’ at the ambo. Quite a different view for shorter people. They were tall for a moment!

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Have you or someone you know

been considering the possibility

of becoming a member of the

Catholic Church? The Rite of

Christian Initiation of Adults

(RCIA) is the way in which adults become fully

active, participating members of the Catholic

Church. Through weekly sessions, non-Christian

adults are prepared for Baptism, Confirmation and

first Eucharist, and non-Catholic Christians and

Catholics who are only baptized are prepared for

Confirmation and first Eucharist.

We now extend an invitation to “Come and see” to

anyone who might be searching or discerning if

the Catholic Faith is a way to commit more deeply

to the call of Jesus. Be assured that now is the time

to listen and to be open to the Spirit of God.

Commitment to the process may follow in the

months ahead. For more information or to set up a

meeting about what the RCIA process entails,

please contact Diane Luceri at 782-1475 X 14 or

[email protected]. Adult Catholics needing

Confirmation should also contact Diane.

Disabilities

Sunday June 12, 2016 - 12 noon

Cathedral of Saint Francis

32 Elm Street, Metuchen NJ

Light Refreshments & Fellowship

after Mass

In anticipation of this special Mass, ALL SEAS

charity, sacrifices and sufferings for the Sick and

Persons with Disabilities throughout the Diocese of

Metuchen who have requested prayerful support.

A Spiritual Bouquet scroll from SEAS will be brought

to the Mass and placed near the altar during the

Mass. Please use the wonderful gift of prayer as a

way to contribute, during this Year of Mercy, to

those with countless crosses. Simply pray (a daily

Rosary, an Our Father, a Hail Mary or any other
