St. Dominic Catholic Church PALM SUNDAY Houston, TX March 20, 2016

Dear Friends in St. Dominic. This week-end is Passion Sunday! The message of the Passion of the Lord: God is trustworthy! This week-end, all Catholics throughout the world turn their hearts and minds once again to the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.. That suffering won for all mankind the definitive victory over sin and hopelessness- a victory we declare and celebrate with these palm branches, the ancient world's symbol of triumph. But let us dig deeper into this mystery of our salvation. Let us not be satisfied with the symbols. God is all-powerful. He could have chosen to save us from sin in many other ways. Why did he choose to do it by suffering? What is the meaning of the Passion? The Passion tells us with perfect clarity the message we most need to hear. The Passion of Our Lord says to us: God is faithful; you can trust Him. Trusting God is the most important thing for us, but it is also the hardest, because our trust has been violated. We have all been wounded because people we trusted let us down, in little things and big things. As a result, we have all built up walls around our hearts, to protect ourselves from being let down again. But those walls also keep out God. God knows that unless we let him into our hearts, we can never experience the happiness we long for. So he came up with a way to win back our trust.: the Passion of Christ. The Passion is God saying to us: No matter what you do, I will keep on loving you . I will never let you down. If we reject him, scourge him, crown him with thorns, betray him, even if we crucify him, he continues to love us: Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. God's love and faithfulness does not depend on us being perfect , and it does not depend on his whims . He will never take it back. We can trust him –completely. That is the message of the Passion. And it is the message that each of us, wounded and sinful as we are, most needs to hear. We have to learn to trust God more and more in order to be transformed by him into the kind of person we know we should be. The Sacred Paschal Triduum is the three most solemn days of the liturgical year; Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. These most holy days celebrate the Paschal Mystery, first, the passion, suffering, and death of the Lord Jesus, followed by his resurrection, the triumph of the holy cross, and Christ’s decisive victory over sin and death. The Triduum is a single feast, the Paschal Mystery, celebrated over three days, and they are the three holiest days of the entire liturgical year. These days rank at the head of the liturgical calendar. They celebrate the most sacred mysteries of our faith, and they ought to be celebrated with the community at liturgy. The Jews have three high holy days, three pilgrimage feasts, Passover, Pentecost, and Booths, and those who lived outside of Jerusalem made pilgrimage to the Temple to celebrate these solemn occasions. The three days of the Triduum are our “high holy days,” our “pilgrimage feast,” and we ought to make pilgrimage from our homes to church to commemorate and honor how the Lord Jesus laid down his life for us, his friends, for our salvation. Please make it a top priority to go to church to celebrate the Triduum this year. Reserve the time. Rearrange your schedule if necessary. Take some personal time off from work. Suspend errands or jobs around the house. Drop everything. Plan to attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion of the Lord on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. These days may be optional, but none are more important. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. Roger Estorque

Roger Estorque

PASSION The word “passion” connotes deep, focused engagement. It also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence. The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year’s history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What day is today? Ask most folks strolling home from church today and they will reply “Palm Sunday.” Not too long ago, today was known as the “Second Sunday of the Passion,” and in 1970 it was renamed “Passion Sunday.” This made some sense, since the procession recalling Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is usually only celebrated once in a parish on this day, but the Passion is proclaimed solemnly at every liturgy. In its most recent incarnation, the name for this day includes both aspects of the celebration: “Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.” In the United States today, most worshipers are provided with palm branches, although in northern Europe pussy willows are favored, and in Italy olive branches are the norm. When our calendar was reformed, the entire structure of the week to come was revised even as the traditional name, “Holy Week,” was retained. The major benefit of the restructuring of our calendar is to help us see that the Triduum, the great three days beginning at sunset this Thursday and extending until sunset on Easter Sunday, is at the heart of the Christian life. Today, as you ponder the Lord’s Passion, you may consider your response to so great a gift. Centuries ago, good Christians vowed to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Today, at least once in your lifetime, promise to participate faithfully in the liturgies. Now begins the Church’s annual baptismal retreat: don’t be left out!
