Living the Gospel with the Heart of Pope Francis

Dr. Edward Sri is a renowned theolo-gian, author, and professor at the Augustine Institute. In this presenta-tion, Dr. Sri invites all Christians to embrace the call of Pope Francis to be missionary disciples in today's

world. With contagious enthusiasm and insightfulness, Dr. Sri makes the Holy Father's message both accessible and actionable for people living in this day and age. Parishioner Comments Dr. Sri shared his insight on Pope Francis' way of living the gospel and it has given me a whole new perspective on deepening my Catholic faith by reaching out to others. This talk helped to dispel some of the fear that Pope Fran-cis is being led to change the teachings of the church. It also made me aware of the fact that in all of my busyness to try and learn about the faith and be very active in the Church, my interior life and my relationship with Jesus is not being adequately attended to.

580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, This is the Lord’s Day and indeed we rejoice in it! Today we observe the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Scriptural texts which are presented for our reflection draw our attention to the God of Creation. In the lection from the

Book of Job we find God questioning Job about the forces of nature. God is the Creator who brought all into being and Job knows not how this wonder came about. In the Gospel the Lord Jesus has power that the wind and the seas obey Him. In the New Testament lection Saint Paul tells the Corinthians that association with Christ brings about a new creation. All this talk of creation is a great segue to Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment and the gift of creation. This document was released after the writing of this article so I will be general and short. Like his namesake, Saint Francis of Assisi was a true environmentalist who saw the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. Francis rejoiced in it and saw it as a gift to be cherished and protected. Pope Francis calls the people of the world to protect and be mindful of the gift of creation. Last Sunday the Lord could not have provided a better day for our parish picnic. The weather was perfect. The food was great and the fellowship was one which I and many enjoyed. I am just sorry that many more of our parishioners from both Saint Ce-cilia and Sacred Heart did not attend. I know that there were some other events taking place but I think the response could have been better. I hope that will be the goal for next year. As a matter of fact, I would like to celebrate the 12:15 p.m. Mass at the Firemen’s Field next year to encourage more people to attend. Outdoor gathering for prayer is something we have been doing since I became your pastor 6 years ago. We go to the parish cemetery a couple of times during the year for Holy Mass and processions. Next Sunday I invite you to join with me in the bless-ing of the new outdoor cross recently erected in the cemetery. The prayer service will begin at 3 o’clock, rain or shine. The out-door crucifix shrine was erected in 1953 and was a gift of the Lusardi Family. The cement cross deteriorated over the years and was falling apart. The corpus of Jesus is in great shape and all we had to do is clean him with some bleach. The cement cross is replaced by a wooden cross thanks to the donations received from parishioners. I am grateful to the volunteers who helped mount the 300 pound image of Christ to the cross, not an easy task. You can see the picture of the guys who assisted with this effort in today’s bulletin (John Sullivan, Jeff Zuber, Bob & Tom Benjamin, Lou Turk, Damiano Servidio). I am also grateful to Mary Lou Mc Grath and Diane Boykow for planting the flowers before the crucifix shrine. God’s wonderful gift of creation is what we all hope to enjoy and rejoice in as the summer vaca-tion season begins. God bless you! Father Zig

ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA, Religious June 21—Patron of Catholic Youth

This youthful scion of the illustrious house of Gonzaga, son of Ferdinand, marquis of Castiglione, was born at Cas-tiglione in the diocese of Brescia, march 9, 1568. From his tenderest years St. Aloysius devoted himself heart and soul to the service of his Creator. His memory has come to us with the sweet fragrance of the most unsullied purity. He united an innocence perfectly angelic with a penance truly heroic. At fourteen years of the age he accompanied his father to Spain, where the latter went to attend the Empress, marie of Austria, wife of Maximilian II. Philip II made him page to Price James, elder brother of Philip II. His innocence remained uncontaminated amid the vanities of the court, nor could the world draw his heart from God. On his return to Italy in 1584, he manifested his desire to enter the Society of Jesus. In spite of opposition, he finally succeeded in carrying out his intentions and became a novice at Tome in 1585, during the pontificate of Pope Pius V. He made his profession November 20, 1587, and soon after received minor orders. From the beginning of his religious life St. Aloysius was a model of perfection, During an epidemic in Rome in 1591, he distinguished himself by his charity toward the sick in the hospital. These labors brought on him the illness that ended in his death. His last days were the faithful echo of his briefly consummated life. He exchanged time for eternity on June 21, 1591, at twenty-four years of age. St. Alo-ysius was canonized in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. PRAYER: God, Author of all heavenly gifts, You gave St. Aloysius both a wonderful innocence of his life and a deep spirit of penance. Through his merits grant that we may imitate his penitence. Amen.
