SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM A Pre-Baptismal Class is held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the parish office. The next class is Monday, July 17th. To register for the class, please call 973-627-0313 . Both parents are encouraged to attend the class before the birth of the baby. The Sacrament of Bap-tism is administered weekly at the 12:15 pm Mass and a Baptismal Ceremony at 1:30 pm. Families are required to be active, contributing parishioners of St. Cecilia’s Parish for 2 months prior to the child’s baptism date.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Arrangements are to be made at least ONE YEAR in ad-vance. The date should not be set until the priest has been consulted.

WALKING PILGRIMAGE TO DOYLESTOWN The annual walking pilgrimage to the National Shrine

of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pennsyl-

vania will begin on August 11th from Saints Peter and

Paul Church in Great Meadows, New Jersey. Pilgrims

journey in prayer and song traveling 60 miles in the

The Living Crown of Mary – One photograph is all that it takes for

The Diocese of Paterson will be hosting the

2017 Pilgrimage this October to the National

Shrine, The Basilica of the Immaculate Concep-

tion in Washington D.C.. on October 20 & 21,

2017. The trip includes transportation, two meals

including the banquet, overnight accommoda-

tions at the Westin Hotel in Virginia, and spiri-

tual visits to America’s Frist Cathedral, and St.

Jude Shrine in Baltimore, and the National Shrine

of the Immaculate conception. Included will be

daily Masses for Friday and Saturday Confession,

SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses the

ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our colum-

barium will have 80 compartments which will be topped by a

statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure will be the

words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany at the grave

of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection and the Life, he

who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John

11:25) For those who choose cremation, the columbarium is

the place (along with the ground) which the Catholic Church

states is the proper place for the burial of the faithful de-

parted’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on the left

side of the cemetery as you enter through the main gate. One

may purchase a burial niche as soon as the structure is in place

and after it has been blessed. Information regarding the price

for the burial spot will be announced in the coming weeks.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING – Parents are asked to

encourage their son/daughter to consider serving Our Lord

at the altar. Training for this ministry will be conducted by

Deacon Matt on Saturday mornings following Labor Day.

Additional information will be forthcoming. Altar servers

should have received their First Holy Communion and are

encouraged to serve into their high school years.

St. Bridget was the daughter of a royal Prince of Sweden, named Birger, and of Ingeburdis, a descendant of the Gothic Kings. From these pious parents she inherited a great love for the Passion of our Lord. Her father, consecrated all Fridays to special acts of penance, and from her childhood St. Bridget loved to meditate upon the Passion of Christ. In obedience to her father, at the age of sixteen she married Ulfo, Prince of Nericia in Sweden, by whom she had eight children, the last of whom, Cath-erine, is now honored among the saints.

Later the holy couple bound themselves by a vow of chasity and made a pilgrimage to Compostela in Galicia. On their return to Sweden, Ulfo, with his wife’s consent, entered a Cistercian monastery, where he died soon after in the odor of sancity. Af-ter his death St. Bridget renounced her rank of princess and changed her habit.

In 1344, she built the great monastery of Wastein, which became the motherhouse of a new Order, that of the Brigittines. She next undertook a pilgrimage to Rome and to Palestine. Having satisfied her devotion at the Holy places sanctified by the life and Passion of our Redeemer, she returned to Rome, where she lived a year longer. During this time she was sorely afflicted by sickness, but endured it with heroic patience and resignation. Her son, Birger, and her daughter, Catherine, were with her in her last moments. Having given them her final instructions, she received the Last Sacraments and died in 1373.

PRAYER Lord God, You revealed heavenly secrets to St. Bridget as she meditated on the Passion of Your Son. Grant that we Your servants may attain the joyful contemplation of Your glory. Amen

My dear parishioners,

Today we commemorate the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Old Testament and

Gospel readings speak to us about the presence of evil and our accountability in dealing with it. We know that evil is always

lurking around every corner trying to influence us to turn away from the holiness of God. In the Gospel parable spoken by Jesus

we find that the presence of evil is unavoidable but that we must be mindful of the “harvest,” that Day of Judgment. Our collabo-

ration with evil will end with our condemnation.

In the Gospel parable the Lord tolerates the presence of evil but not its triumph. What will conquer is the Kingdom of God that

may first appear as small and unimpressive, but which will explode into an eternal reality for the faithful. We are reminded that

small gestures and little deeds, done in the name of Christ, grow to transform the world. Yes, you and I are crucial in sanctifying

the world. You may think that you are unimportant in this task but that is far from the truth. That is why we must stay close to

the Lord through our prayers, reception of the sacraments and our Christian witness in the world. The Apostle Paul reminds us in

his Letter to the Romans that the Holy Spirit is joining with us in praying for the success of God’s will. Yes, our spiritual life

must remain vibrant and strong against the lure of evil if we are to be gathered in the harvest of eternal life.

The sowing of good seed which grows into the mystery of God’s Kingdom is a work which all missionaries have engaged in

since the first days of the Church. Each year the Diocese of Paterson welcomes a number of men and women missionaries who

come to speak about the Gospel seeds which their communities are planting throughout the world. On the weekend of August 12

-13 our two parishes of Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Cecilia will welcome priests who will share with us the evangelization

which is taking place thanks to the prayer support and financial support we offer. I will share additional information with you

regarding their visit in the coming weeks. Please remember that they will be seeking our support.

Speaking of support, I am so grateful to you for the offerings which are given to the Lord each week at Holy Mass. Your regular

and generous offerings pay our bills and continue the services which our parish provides so that the Kingdom of God may con-

tinue to burst forth. I am mindful that the forces of evil are strong in trying to convince us that our offerings would serve us better

someplace else. Christ’s Church needs your support so that the Kingdom of God may flourish and not be overtaken by the forces

of evil. YOU make this a reality!
