BEARING FRUIT Few of us, even when we meditate on the image of the vine and branches, stop to really think about how God “prunes” us. For some there is the danger of thinking that we are already producing fruit for the kingdom, in deed and truth as John says, perhaps raising a family, being ac ve in our parish, and so on. But even those branches which are bearing fruit, the Gospel tells us, can be pruned to produce s ll more. Today Saul, freshly “pruned” by his conversion, arrives in Jerusalem and meets resistance. Since he had been persecu ng Chris ans, this was only natural. But even a er he is accepted and begins to bear fruit, he meets further adversity, and his le ers are filled with many accounts of how his trials “pruned” him to produce greater fruit for the kingdom. Like him, as long as we remain in Christ we will con nue to bear fruit and, when the will of the Father determines it is me to prune us, the strength of the true vine must enable us to endure it. © J. DEN FRUTOS Pocos de nosotros, incluso cuando meditamos sobre la imagen de la vid y los sarmientos, nos detenemos a pensar realmente acerca de cómo Dios nos “poda”. Reflec ons on the Word of God with Fr. Oswaldo and Fr. Gene Read Acts 9: 26-31 1 John 3: 18-24 John 15: 1-8

Live as a branch on the vine of Christ “God is greater than our hearts and knows everything.” Jesus uses the image of a vine and its branches to show us how dynamic life can be with him living in us as we are living in him. The passage in Acts shows this reality as the Church was at peace, becoming courageous, revering the Lord, receiving the Spirit’s consola on, and a rac ng many. A vine is greater than its

branches, it holds them, and they grow when anything that hinders growth is pruned away. St. Paul met the vine “Jesus” and in the encounter Jesus pruned away Paul’s (by his own admission) arrogance, pride, and violent behavior. Paul like most of his friends wanted a military hero to free them from Rome’s cruelty, not a Messiah that would suffer and die. As Paul did, we must learn the power of freely dying and rising with Jesus.

A daily mindful prac ce of living in Christ as a branch on the vine is how we learn to accept Jesus’ healing and forgiving love to prune the dark places of our hurts and sins. Believe that Jesus is risen and is the merciful one in the Eucharist. He doesn’t call the strong, he builds each weak branch on the vine of the Church who believe – even when we fail. As risen Lord, he teaches his own experience of being pruned that the pain of the cross inflicted death not on him, but on death itself. That the nails no longer torture him but deepen our love for him. He persists in telling us the Father wants faith not death.

Relying on the pruning of God we live more free and joyful. Relying on ourselves we live stuck and frustrated. Forgiveness blossoms when bi erness is pruned. Humble gra tude and generosity emerge when control, en tlement and using others are pruned. Self-control, faithfulness, and joy at another’s good flows when self-indulgence, avoiding life’s demands, and contempt at another’s goods are (as Jesus said) thrown into a fire and burned.

The dynamic, peaceful culmina on of the pruning is when a person dies in the name of Jesus, what really dies (or pruned) is death, not the believer. Have a blessing day.

Reflexiones de la Palabra de Dios con P. Oswaldo y P. Gene Lee Hechos 9:26-31 1 Juan 3:18-24 Juan 15:1-8

Yo soy la vid y ustedes los sarmientos "Dios es más grande que nuestros corazones y lo sabe todo". Jesús usa la imagen de una vid y sus ramas para mostrarnos cómo la vida puede ser al estar unidos a él. El pasaje en Hechos muestra esta realidad de como la Iglesia estaba en paz, siendo valiente, alabando al Señor, recibiendo el consuelo del Espíritu y atrayendo a muchos. Una vid es mayor que sus ramas,

las sos ene, y crecen; cuando algo impide el crecimiento es podada. San Pablo se encontró con la vid "Jesús" y en el encuentro Jesús podó la arrogancia, el orgullo y el comportamiento violento de Pablo (por el propio Pablo). Pablo, como la mayoría de sus amigos, quería que un héroe militar los liberara de la crueldad de Roma, no un Mesías que sufriría y moriría. Como lo hizo Pablo, debemos aprender el poder de morir y resucitar libremente con Jesús.

Una prác ca diaria consciente de vivir en Cristo como una rama en la vid es cómo aprendemos a aceptar la sanacion de Jesús y el amor perdonador para podar los lados oscuros de nuestros de la vida. Cree que Jesús ha resucitado y es el misericordioso en la Eucaris a. Nos llama a ser fuerte. Como Señor resucitado, él enseña su propia experiencia de ser podado que el dolor de la cruz infligió muerte no sobre él, sino sobre la muerte misma. Que los clavos ya no lo torturan sino que profundizan nuestro amor por él. Él persiste en decirnos que el Padre quiere fe, no muerte.

Confiando en la poda de Dios vivimos más libres y alegres. Confiando en nosotros mismos vivimos atrapados y frustrados. El perdón florece cuando se poda la amargura. La culminación dinámica y pacífica de la poda se da cuando una persona muere en el nombre de Jesús, lo que realmente muere (o podado) es la muerte, no el creyente. Tengan un bendecido dia.
