THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

God is great all the time, all the time, God is great!

FROM THE DESK OF FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR…

Gratitude and Prayers for our bishop

This past Wednesday, May 1st, our Bish-

op, Patrick McGrath, retired. After twenty years of leading the Diocese, and nearly 49 years of faithful service as a priest, he has stepped down, leaving behind a life of work and dedica-tion to our Mother, the Church.

For many people, the Bishop is the only bishop we have known here in San Jose. He has been for us a shepherd, a father, a leader, and we are grateful for everything he has done for our Diocese and for all of us.

Bishop McGrath has gifted our diocese with his openness and kindness. We have seen his episcopal motto, “Together in Christ,” many times in his letters or in the Annual Diocesan Appeal, trying to invite all to do what we are called to do: united, together, not just as human beings but as believers, united in Christ.

Without a doubt Bishop McGrath will be missed, but he will continue to be present in all those who, through his teachings, encourage-ment and kindness, have become his sons and daughter in Faith.

As we express our gratitude to him, Do PJ, M’athair I gCreideamh, I ask you to continue to pray for the Bishop. Father Sergio

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Can you remember as a child hearing the same thing repeated? “Make your bed” or “Do your homework.” As my old Latin teacher correctly said, “Repetition is the soul of learning.” Indeed, especially when what is asked is something we already know. Today’s Gospel tells of how Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after his Resurrection. Peter, John and the other disciples had spent an unproductive night fishing when an unrecognized Jesus told them to try again. They had astounding success, first John and then Peter recognized Jesus. This is a foretelling of their call to persist in their call as those who revealed who Jesus was “to all the nations.” Success was not measured by immediate results but instead, even in the face of apparent failure, they were to keep faithfully telling the story of Jesus, as the anointed one. Taking the long view of expected results requires a trust that the message arises from truth, not from knowledge or special insights of the teller. A lesson that we must learn over and over, after all we’re disciples too. The second part of the Gospel gives a most compelling illustration of how Jesus saw ministry in his name should be conducted. Still gathered with the disciples, who by now recognized him as the risen Jesus, they were to undergird their words by recognizing that their fundamental action was to feed others. Three times Jesus tells Peter that his love for him must be experienced and taught by caring for the “sheep” to whom he would preach. It wasn’t by any special knowledge or talent but instead by whatever action was needed to let people know the power of love, a love for one another. How easy it is for us to consider our faith as a private, one on one, relationship with our God. It is that indeed, but there is more. It is a truth that must be shared, for it is by the very act of sharing that we begin, humbly, to encounter the presence of God, of Jesus with us. The repeated admonitions we heard in early life provided a foundation for success as we grew. Similarly, we need repeated efforts to share what our belief in Jesus calls us to be. Many and varied are the actions that are to include “feeding” others. One hopes that, over time, we will need retrospection to realize that in feeding others, especially the other, that we are fed. Our God who is our source and destination asks us to discover who we are by living in service and love. By continuing efforts our journey of faith, ever so slowly, reveals the precious jewel of Jesus’ presence. When we do, we are fed and become those who feed the hungry… and all hunger for the love which enfolds us.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK

It seems a conundrum that we become more green by removing some green ….plants. The fire marshal has notified many of the need to remove fire prone plants like junipers to prevent spreading flames should there be a fire.

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PARRACO….

Agradecimiento y Oraciones a nuestro obispo

Y, saliendo fuera, rompió a llorar amargamente.” (Lc 22, 61-62).

https://es.aleteia.org/2016/04/30/por-que-sera-que-jesus-le-pregunto-a-pedro-tres-veces-si-lo-amaba/

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

DIOCESAN LAYETTE PROGRAM 3rd Annual Collection for the Diocesan Layette Program The Handmades of St. Catherine invite you to prayerfully consider participating in our 3rd annu-al collection for the Diocesan Layette Program. The Layette Program began in our diocese in 1955 to assist low-income mothers and their newborn babies. Once a Public Health nurse in the hospital identifies a mother in need, her ba-by receives a layette from this program and fol-low up home visits by the nurses. Each layette is valued at approximately $400. The Layette Program serves the needs of new mothers and their babies from East Palo Alto down through South County. Our own community is greatly helped by this program. With the summer months soon upon us, and a time when donations run low, we are collecting layette items in May, the month of Our Blessed Mother Mary. Any handmade blankets, quilts, bibs etc. are gladly accepted along with items from the list below. All items will be collected the weekends of May 4/5 and May 18/19. Onesies, Play outfits, Long/short sleeve sleep-ing gowns, Socks, Burp Cloths, Blanket sleep-ers, Crib sheets, Blankets/Quilts, Bath towels/wash cloths, and Bibs All items must be new and from size New-born to Six months. FOCUS SAFE PARK PROGRAM The FOCUS Safe Parking Program pro-vides a safe place for up to eight homeless families, single women and couples to stay every night from 7pm to 8am. The site is the Morgan Hill Bible Church, 15055 Mon-terey Rd, Morgan Hill, CA 95037. Current-ly 7 households, made up of 12 adults and

9 children ranging from 7 months to13 yrs. are enrolled. In addition to a place to park, relax and sleep overnight without the fear of harassment or arrest for trespassing, FOCUS offers:

Dignity, respect and accountability Access to showers, laundry, toilets and meals A dedicated case manager to help in transition to housing

The households that do not have an RV generally sleep in their cars or tents. Generous donors have provided a Tiny House and trailers as an alternative to sleeping in the car or tent. Volunteers are needed to help in the mornings (7am to 8am) and evenings (7pm to 8pm). Volunteers provide a friendly and welcoming face to the families in the Pro-gram. They also set out simple breakfast foods or snacks, log in clients in the evening and log out clients in the morning, and lock the administrative Tiny House when they leave. Orientations for new volunteers are provided. You may sign up to volunteer for an evening or morning on the Parish iVolunteer website, link address below…

DIOCESAN PRIESTS RETIREMENT APPEAL

Our retired diocesan priests continue to impact the lives of thousands each and every year! These men of God celebrate Mass, administer the sacraments, and walk with us still. Our Dioc-esan priests have given us decades of faithful service, receiving modest compensation for their work. Many priests continue their ministry for years after retirement, assisting in parishes with weekend liturgies, hearing confessions, and vis-iting the sick. These priests rely on their payments from So-cial Security and the Priest Retirement Plan for their needs. In recent years the number of re-tired priests has grown significantly to 44, chal-lenging the diocesan retirement resources. Therefore on Good Shepherd Sunday, May 12, each parish will take up a second collection at Mass for the new Diocesan Priests Retirement Appeal. You may wish to make a gift by going to www.dsj.org/priests-retirement. Your generosity to this appeal helps keep an important promise of care for priests who have been good Shepherds and have kept their promises to us.
