DON’T BE ANXIOUS

One can wonder how Luke’s Gospel passage today might have been different if Mary, not Martha, had been the one to complain to Jesus, if Mary had said “Lord, look at her! Here you are sharing your wisdom and all she can think about is supper.” Jesus may have noted, as Luke does, that Martha was burdened with much serving. Later in his writings, this same evangelist will describe in Acts how the early community set aside people whose ministry it is to see to the serving at table.

As a fully human person, Jesus knew the human needs that had to be tended. He doesn’t deny this, nor does he chastise Martha for her working in service. He chides her for being anxious and worried. How can Martha—or any of us—be anxious or worried about the serving that needs to be done when we do it in the context of the Lord’s will and wisdom? The Church has done more than any other institution to bear the heavy burdens of serving the ill, the uneducated, the suffering; has been “Martha” to countless of the little ones whom Christ told us were his very presence. Sixteen Blessed Teresian Martyrs of Compiègne

Sixteen Carmelites were caught up in the French Revolution and martyred. When the revolution started in 1789, a group of twenty-one discalced (barefoot or shoeless) Carmelites lived in a monastery in Compiegne France, founded in 1641. The monastery was ordered closed in 1790 by the Revolutionary government, and the nuns were disbanded. Sixteen of the nuns were accused of living in a religious community in 1794. They were arrested on June 22 and imprisoned in a Visitation convent in Compiegne. There they openly resumed their religious life. On July 12, 1794, the Carmelites were taken to Paris and five days later were sentenced to death. They went to the guillotine singing the Salve Regina. They were beatified in 1906 by Pope St. Pius X. The Carmelites were: Mother Teresa of St. Augustine, prioress, Mother St. Louis, sub-prioress, Mother Henriette of Jesus, ex-prioress, Sister Mary of Jesus Crucified, Sister Charlotte of the Resurrection, ex-sub-prioress and sacristan, Sister Euphrasia of the Immaculate Conception, Sister Teresa of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Sister Julie Louise of Jesus, widow, Sister Teresa of St. Ignatius, Sister Mary-Henrietta of Providence, Sister Constance, novice. Lay sisters: Sister St. Martha, Sister Mary of the Holy Spirit, Sister St. Francis Xavier. Servants: Catherine Soiron, Thérèse Soiron.
