March for Life,Washington D.C.

January 27, 2017

We are again a ending the Na onal March for Life

this January, leaving on the 26th and returning on the

28th via bus. Please sign up in the social hall as soon as

possible as sea ng is limited (we have other churches

joining us). It is important to give a powerful message

of our peaceful and loving resolve to Donald Trump

about how we see dignity in every life and this issue is

of top concern. We march for those who cannot.

What is the meaning of the Advent wreath?

The Advent wreath is evergreen because of the eter‐

nal life Christ brings to us. It is round to show the

eternity of God and life with Him in Heaven. Each of

the candles represents a promise or covenant God

gave His people to prepare the world for Christ. These

candle covenants are: Adam, Noah, Abraham, and

Moses. What are significant moments in your faith

journey that God has used to prepare you for Him‐

self? What are you doing now to get ready in your

soul for Christ to come this Christmas? Talk to your

family about these topics around the dinner table.

Join us for Christmas Caroling

on Christmas Day!

The youth group will be visi ng The Oaks nursing

home on 3864 Sweeten Creek to sing for the resi‐

dents. O en mes the residents have people sing for

them before Christmas but are feeling lonely on the

day of Christ’s birth. It is the perfect day to bring the

love and joy of the Savior to them! We will meet at

The Oaks at 3:00pm, and then proceed to St. Barna‐

bas for a cookie party at 4:00pm. All are welcome to

join us!

Third Sunday of Advent December 11, 2016

Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing,

crowned with everlasting joy. — Isaiah 35:10a

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

W hen the es of affec on and authority that bound Europe’s Catholics unrav‐

eled in the sixteenth century, many cul‐tures lost me‐honored customs of faith. Some customs proved to be especially diffi‐cult for the reformers to wrest away from the people, especially those celebrated in the home. This week in Sweden, a country where the Catholic Church was disestablished four hundred years ago, a Catholic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. St. Lucia, Lucy, is celebrated on December 13. The long‐story‐short is that Lucy was a Chris an whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow, and she rejected her father’s authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beau ful eyes, but her vision was miracu‐lously restored. The candles worn today by the eldest daughter of the family are tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint. So this patroness of light and clear vision is revered on the shortest, darkest days of the Nordic winter. Before the reform of the Grego‐rian calendar in the sixteenth century, December 13 was the winter sols ce. Today, young girls appear in the morning wearing lighted can‐dles on their crowned heads (ba ery‐operated now a er many mishaps), and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. For the Swedes, who are not churchgoers, the “Lucias” are the official heralds of the holiday season and a sign of everyone’s yearning for more light in this world. Europe once abounded with customs like this; the survival of this custom in Scandinavia is a sign of God’s grace, and how fer le the soil is to receive the true mes‐sage of Advent. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A SEASON OF HOPE

T oday we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In par cular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flowers holds a message for

each of us. Too o en we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consumerism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, this leaves us like parched land, thirs ng for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this season offers hope. We are told that those who are ransomed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Stewardship & Parish Life

December 11, 2016, Third Sunday of Advent Some of the obstacles that keep us from “making a straight path” for the Lord are the same obstacles that keep us from embracing stewardship as a way of life. John the Bap‐
