TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
T he second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Transfigura on of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Tabor has been the focus of devo on to this event. As mountains go, it is not par cularly lo y, rising about fi een hun‐dred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn’t iden fy the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the
Transfigura on, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and for fied monasteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Chris ans started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfigura on. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the Franciscans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and construc ng the present church on the site in 1924. The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and La n (that’s us) zones. At one me, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permi ed. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while others take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Chris an pilgrims in the fourth century. It’s hard to imagine the fisher‐men following Jesus up this craggy mountain without complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter’s plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Lord converted many hearts and inspired many more to share their encounters with college students who were unable to a end. It is my hope and prayer that these students who received His love will con nue to return it and inspire others to do the same throughout their lives. It’s soon to be
St. Joseph’s Day
and our St. Vincent de Paul Society needs our
help.
This year, the St. Joseph’s Day altar will be up from March 10 un l March 18. This year’s table request is shaving cream, disposable razors, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste & brushes, and facial soap. Each of these items comes in a men’s and women’s varie‐ty. These items cannot be purchased with food stamps and go a long way to helping our lo‐cal poor with their bodily needs. Two boxes will be on the altar; one for mon‐etary dona ons and one for prayer requests. The society will offer those inten ons during their prayer at their mee ngs. These dona ons will help provide Easter food boxes for our local poor as well as the boxes that are handed out every Thursday, and monetary aid with gas, electric, and rent. Our St. Barnabas Conference of St. Vin‐cent de Paul is ever apprecia ve of all the help our congrega on gives to con nue their ministry. If you would like more informa on about the St. Joseph’s Day altar, pick up an informa‐
onal tri‐fold. Please give SVdP your prayer requests, it is the greatest way they can thank you, by uni ng their prayers with yours.
