From Our Pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Dear Friends, How close is God to us? How close are we to God? The tragic things we hear so often in the news (I’m thinking in particular of the recent mass shootings) can make us afraid and confused, even about God’s presence and His help. Last week we celebrated Jesus as Savior of the World. We celebrated Him in a BIG way! I am still thinking about the honor that He received from the enthusiastic prayer and procession we offered on Sat-urday evening in the church and in the streets of Cul-more. To praise Jesus and to acknowledge Him as our Savior and King is to acknowledge His closeness to us—and our desire to be close to Him. All of this helps us in the times which might tempt us to despair or to doubt. One of the hymns we repeated as we walked in the procession is one which reminds us of our roots as believers walking by faith on this earth. The same hymn acknowledges the part Our Blessed Mother plays in bringing God close to us. I don’t know of a version of this hymn in English but here is a transla-tion for your reflection: Reine Jesús por siem-pre! Reign His heart -- in our homeland, the soil of Mary’s nation! As we celebrate Our Lady’s Assumption this week (please don’t neglect Her; come to Mass on Wednes-day evening or on Thursday!) may it be so that we are convinced of God’s closeness and that we live with His peace in our hearts! Mary brought Him to us and now She lives in glory with Him—and close to us. This weekend is Deacon Joseph’s last Sunday among us. I want to thank him for his generous and enthusi-astic service during his brief time here. He is now “one of us.” I know that being assigned here is an experience that can’t be replicated. Please pray for our Deacon in his last year of studies as he returns to Rome. With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor

Church Tabernacle You will soon notice that the Tabernacle in the church is much smaller. Please do not be alarmed! The small one is a substitute. With the help of a kind donor we have sent the Tabernacle we know and love to be restored and refin-ished. After a couple of months, when it returns, we will be edified by the way it shines and calls us to adore our Eucharistic Lord. Thanks for your patience as we take this step toward our church’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

St. Anthony’s Oktubrefest– A Cultural Food Fusion This year’s International Food Festival will have an Ok-toberfest theme with an infusion of other cultures in our Parish. There will be a variety of live entertainment, along with a fun Food Fusion event. Join us from 4:00-9:00 pm on Saturday, September 14, for an afternoon of family fun and food, ending with a bonfire under the stars! Food tickets will be sold af-ter all Masses, starting the weekend of August 17/18.

    Dear St. Anthony Families,

It is hard to believe that in less than three months the school’s Parent

Teacher Organization will be hosting the Christmas Attic Craft Fair on

November 2 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. It will be the 40th year for this

    fair!

This is a wonderful family event with

its proceeds benefiting St. Anthony School. This is the PTO’s largest

fundraiser of the year and all are welcome. For all of the crafters and

artists, our PTO is still accepting registrations for the Craft Fair. If you

would like to participate, visit the school home page,

www.stanthonyschoolva.org to register online or download a form to

mail. We will once again preview our crafters before the event on our

school and Christmas Attic social media pages.

We would like to remind families that there are still openings at our St. Anthony of Padua School for the 2019-2020 school year. Schedule a tour and see how you can become part of our School family.

Stewardship Reflection “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart

    be.” LUKE 12:34

Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treas-ure? How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this world.

Farm Gleaning with The St. Lucy Project Commissioned by Christ is joining Catholic Charities of Arlington’s St. Lucy Project to glean crops at Parker Farms on the northern neck of Virginia through a series of One Day Mission trips. These one-day farm glean-ing mission trips are great family events, an opportuni-ty to help feed the hungry (a corporal work of mercy), and a great service project for church groups, bible studies, and confirmation students. One day mission trips are scheduled for September 7, October 5, or November 2, 2019. Each mission trip is scheduled to start at 9:00 am and end no later than 3:00 pm. These crops have been donated by farmers and will be trans-ported back to the St. Lucy Project warehouse and dis-tributed to local, hungry residents within 48 hours of picking the produce. To sign up for any of the mission trips visit www.commissionedbychrist.org and click on “Get Involved”. For more information contact CBC Farm Gleaning Mission Trip Volunteer Coordinator – Tom Pedagno [email protected] .
