2 Monsignor’s Message 20 September 2020

In the Bible the Book of Psalms contains prayers that

cover the spectrum of human emotion.

Sometimes the context is obvious. Psalm 122 is a

hymn that was likely sung as believers processed toward

Jerusalem for the high holy days: “I rejoiced when they

said to me, ‘We will go up to the house of the Lord.’

And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusa-

lem—Jerusalem built as a city with compact unity. To it

the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, according to

the decree for Israel, to give thanks in the name of the

Lord, seats for the house of David.” I remember the

first time I set eyes on Jerusalem, I was on a tour bus,

looking out the window

when I saw it on the hori-

zon; immediately I

hummed that psalm with

a grateful heart. It can be

used as a start to any pray-

er time, a moment when

we pause from our ordi-

nary activities and wel-

come our awe-inspiring

Lord.

Sometimes a psalm cele-

brates creation by prais-

ing the Creator. In Psalm

24 we find: “The Lord is

the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples.

It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it

firm.” It is a call to welcome the splendor of the Crea-

tor, which is much greater than any other. The psalm

says, “O gate, life high your heads, grow higher ancient

doors. Let him enter, the king of glory.” I love that

image: we got to get bigger doors if we expect the king

of glory to enter. I can imagine myself turning my car

one day to again catch sight of Yosemite’s majestic

valley, its waterfalls on either side, and the Merced

river running through it.

The psalms don’t always praise God. Some are pray-

ers wondering where God is when you need him. In

Psalm 10 we find: “Lord, why do you stand afar off

and hide yourself in times of distress? The poor man

is devoured by the pride of the wicked; he is caught in

the schemes that others have made. … [The wicked

man] crouches, preparing

to spring, and the helpless

fall beneath his strength.

He thinks in his heart:

‘God forgets,’ he hides his

face, he does not see.” I

appreciate the image of

the wicked man crouch-

ing behind a bush and

then jumping out to cap-

ture and devour his prey.

Sometimes it feels that

way. We are disappoint-

ed with God’s lack of re-

sponse to our pleading,

when we feel abandoned by him. The elders who put

together the Bible did not edit out the cries of the

disenchanted. And God is not upset when we express

our frustration with him; he knows how it feels. Re-

member, when Jesus prays in agony on the cross,

WE ARE BACK IN THE CHURCH... Orange County has moved to tier 2 (red/substantial) in the Governor’s Covid-19 scale. The 9:00 AM Weekday and Saturday morning Mass will be in the church. Safe distancing precautions must be followed. Please remain in your place at the time of Holy Communion; the minister will come to you. If more than 65 come for these Masses, they will be directed to the patio to watch the Mass on the television. Some may feel more comfortable being outside. Holy Communion will be brought to them. Mass on Saturday at 5:00 PM, Mass on Sunday at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM will remain outdoors. We would like to add an additional outdoor Mass at 8:00 AM Sunday so more of you can attend but we can’t do so until we have enough ushers. Let Father John know if you are willing to help. In the case of inclement weather, the outdoor Masses will be canceled. Confessions will be heard in the hall from 8:30 to 8:50 AM.
