July First Sunday Mission Offering

Our First Sunday Mission Offering in July goes to the McKee Memorial Fund. In recent years, money from this fund has been used to help support the work

of Dr. Martha Sommers. For the past ten years, Dr. Sommers has served as the only long-term doctor at the Embangweni Hospital in Malawi. The hospital serves a large rural area in a region where 25% of the population is HIV positive and one in four children don’t live to see their fifth birthday. Periodically, doctors who are serving at such posts must return to the United States to keep their education and certifications current. This year, Dr. Sommers is on leave, updating her medical skills while working in a U.S. hospital.

Since she does not need financial support during this time, we will be supporting the work of PCUSA mis-sion co-workers Tim and Rachel Stone who are also in Malawi. Although Malawi is the size of Pennsyl-vania, it has more Presbyterians than the entire U.S. Rapid church growth has led to a severe clergy shortage. Currently, there is only one trained pastor for every 5,000 church members. Tim is an Old Testament and Hebrew professor. He will be working to educate the next generation of pastors and teachers at Zomba Theological College. His wife, Rachel, is a global health advocate and hopes to work as a childbirth educator and birth assistant. They have two young sons.

To help support their work, simply use the envelope marked “McKee Memorial” in the July section of your envelope booklet or use a “First Sunday Mission Offering” envelope from the pew racks.

In the meantime, please pray for the people of Malawi, Tim and Rachel Stone and their family, and Mar-tha. The Embangweni Hospital will not have a U.S. doctor on staff during her absence. Martha is under-standably concerned about the community which she has served so faithfully and to which she hopes to return.

Got Dessert?

Saint Andrews needs a few good bakers. We are supplying desserts for Meals on Wheels for the month of July. Ideas for baked goods include: Cookies—No Nuts or Icing Bundt Cakes—No Icing Gingerbread Pies—All Kinds Except Cream Pies Cupcakes—No Icing Angel Food Cakes Please have the items packed for the freezer. Baked goods can be delivered to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, at the cor-ner of Jefferson & Cliff Streets, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 10 am. Please contact Barb Hutchison at (724) 285-4194 if you have any questions or plan on bak-ing in July. Thank you so much for helping!

Meet Naveen John Raj Our new sponsored child at the Indo-American Home for Children is Naveen

John Raj. He is 15 years old and has been at the home since 2007. His two

younger brothers, Nabeesh (13 years old) and Narsesh (11 years old), also live

there. The boys have no father and their family is very poor. Naveen likes to

read, play cricket, and enjoys helping in the gardens. His birthday is September

19th. His family has a well-established relationship with the home and we look

forward to sponsoring him for a number of years to come. Please keep Naveen

and his brothers in your prayers, as well as our two former sponsored children,

Kowsalya and Dison.

Christmas Cookie Walk

For the past 6 years, the Mission Team has organized our annual U-Name-It Auction. The money raised helped fund the church’s new boilers, electrical upgrades in the church kitchen, and scholarships for students at Forman Christian College in Pakistan. Special thanks to everyone who made these auctions such a success!

This year, the Mission Team would like to spice things up by try-ing something new. Instead of the U-Name-It Auction, we are planning our first ever Christmas Cookie Walk and we need your help! On Saturday, December 14, 2013, we’ll have an assortment of delicious home-made candy and cook-ies for sale in the Bethany Room. We need volunteers to bake cookies (lots and lots of cookies!) and volunteers to assist customers the day of the sale. Please start thinking about ways you can help. The money raised will go to Saint Andrews’ Air Condition-ing Fund and scholarships for students at Forman Christian College.

June First Sunday Mission Offering Our First Sunday Mission Offering in June goes to Presbyterian Disaster

Assistance to provide ongoing help for vic+ms of Hurricane Sandy and

immediate emergency care for residents of Moore, Oklahoma. On May

20, 2013, one of the worst tornadoes in U.S. history swept through Moore. It leveled

en+re neighborhoods, destroying homes, schools, businesses, and lives. As survivors

begin the long, hard process of rebuilding, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is there—

helping to provide food, shelter, and pastoral care.

We can help put Christ’s love into ac+on by making a dona+on. Simply use the special

envelopes marked “Presbyterian Disaster Assistance” in the pew racks or write a check

with “Presbyterian Disaster Assistance” on the memo line. Thank you!
