The aim of the Foundation is to promote the maritime history of France and to preserve the Belem – a three-masted barque, the last in a line of French square-rigged tall ships and the sole survivor of France’s merchant navy of the 19th century. > The Fondation Belem is managed by a board of directors and composed by 15 members representing the Caisse d’Epargne – her historical patron – and 4 Ministries (Interior, Defense, Cultural, Transport) as well as Marine national Museum and qualified people. The budget is constituted by revenues from training ships, privatization, public visits and the Belem’s shop; from the sponsors and principally with the historical patron of the Caisse d’Epargne and more recently with companies of Nantes. And well with donors associated to the Club des Amis du Belem. > The Foundation has set itself the goal of making the Belem accessible to the widest public and continue to sail thanks to promote the knowledge and understanding of France's maritime heritage. Listed as an historic monument in 1984, the Belem welcome each year 1 300 trainees and 50.000 visitors. The Belem participate to tall ships gatherings, event for companies and local communities, for private events (sea cruises or harbor receptions) and exceptionally the Fondation organize sail with further destinations and the Belem becomes a real French ambassador. 1 - The small deck house Thispartoftheship,datingbacktoGuinness’time.Itwassmallerfirstthen extendedforbeingadjointothemaindeckhouse.It,isnowtheofficer’swardroom.Atthefoot ofthemainmast,the“NurembergSafe”wasbelongtooneofthefirstBelemcaptain’s.Thearmchairs stillbearwitnesstothislonggoneera.

2 - The main deck house ThismajesticroomdatesbacktotheDukeofWestminster.Itswallsarelined withCubanmahogany.Itwascomposedof2rooms:oneroofandonesmallsmokingroomAtoneend, thesplendidmahoganystairsusedtoleadtotheguestsuites.Guinnesshasjoinedtheseroominabigone. Todaythemaindesckhouseisthemeetingplaceforthetrainees.

3 - The battery* Thelivingquartersofthetraineeswheremealsaresharedwiththeofficersandcrew abouttotakeorcomingofftheirwatch.Thelongtablecansit36peopleoverallbutmealsaretaken inshiftsbasedonthewatchschedules.Alongeithersideofthebatteryarethe48berthsforthetrainees.

4 - The hule* Inthelowestpartoftheship,orbilge,themainholdhousesthefuelandthewastetanksaswell aspartoftheairconditioningsystem.Thereisalsoastoreroom.Tothefore,standtwofreshwatertanks, thenthesailloftcontainingacompletesetofsparesails.

5 - The gallery Thegalleyismodestinsize,but64excellentmealsareprepareddailyby2merchantnavy cooks.Refrigeratedfoodstoresarelocatedunderthemaindeck.

6 - The crew's quarters* Traditionally,thecrewarelodgedundertheforecastle,orfocsle:thecommon crewquarters,andthecabinsofthebosun,themastercarpenterandthecooks.

7 - The carpenter's store Itholdsaworkbenchandallthetraditionalwoodworktools,forindispensable repairsatsea.

8 - The bosun's store Thisisthebosun’skingdom,histreasuretroveoflines,cottoncaulkingcord andpitch,whereeverysmellbringsbackthepast,withanassortmentofsparesfortherigging(steellines, blocks,etc).

9 - The forecastle Forafullviewoftherigging,paintedwhite.It’sathree-mastedbarquesquare rigging,typicalofthelast“Antillais”ships.Youcanalsoseethebowspritextendingoveragoldenstem helix.Thewindlassandthemooringlinesarethemainequipmentinthisarea.

10 - The spardeck ThissuperstructurealsodatesbacktoBritishownership.Theliferaftsandtheship’s serviceboatsstandthere.Severalvarnishedskylightsareapparent.The34meterslongmainmastgoes throughthespardeck.

11 - The quarterdeck Thisdeckisthecommandingpostwheretheofficerofthewatchstandsnight anddayatsea.Thewheelhouseisarecentaddition;itsheltersmodernnavigationinstruments,charts andotherdocuments.Behindtheweelhouse,asplendidskylightdatesbacktotheconstruction oftheship.Situatedbehindthelargesteeringwheel,the“Turtle”,awoodenhousingprotectingarather originalsteeringgear(2halfsscrews)isBritishmade.TheDukeofWestminsterbuiltsomeveryVictorian lookingbalustrades,untypicalofamerchantship.Theytendtomaketheshiplookheavier,buttheyare nowpartofthehistoryoftheBelem.

12 -Theofficer'squarters*Traditionally,theofficer’squarterscabinsandthecaptain’slounge arelocatedunderthequarterdeck.Fivesinglecabinsaccommodatetheship’sstaffandadouble cabinisatthedisposaloftheship’sowner.Theofficersworkinthe“deckoffice”completewith computersandphotocopier.Thepharmacyisalsolocatedinthisquarter.

13 - The captain's lounge* Nowadayitisinfactthecaptain’sofficewithsomebeautifulCuban mahoganyfurnitureleftoverfromtheBritishowners,particularlySirArthurErnestGuinness’sgreat armchair.

14 - The engine room* Housestwo575HPJohnDeerepropulsionengines,runandmaintained bytheChiefEngineer.Theywereinstalledin1999.Theseenginesdeliverfullpowertotwo4bladescrews at1,500rpm.Thefueltankshold40tonsofdieselfuel,allowinganautonomyof24daysat7knots,i.e. 4,000nauticmiles.Theshipalsohas3powergeneratorsandafreshwatersystemtransforming8tons ofseawateraday.

15 - The painted mock gunports WhenshesailedunderthecoloursofMrDemangetheship, thenpaintedingrey,alreadyhadmockgunports.TheDukeofWestminsterkeptthem,butpainted theshipblackandwhite.TheseusedtobethecoloursofFrance’slargestsailingshipcompany,Bordes.

A few major landmarks in a hundred years of historyJune 10, 1896,inChantenay-sur-Loire,notfarfromNantes,theDubigeonshipyardlaunchedthethree-mastedbarqueBelem,builttocarrycocoabeansfromBraziltoFrance.Fromthetimeofherlaunchuntil1913,shecompleted33transatlanticcrossingsboundforBraziland,subsequently,theWestIndies.

In 1914,thesailingvesselwasputundertheBritishflag.FirstthepropertyoftheDukeofWestminster,whoconvertedherintoaluxuriouspleasureyachtandgaveengines,shewassubsequentlysoldtoSirArthurErnestGuinnessin1921,whorenamedherFantômeII.HetookpartinthelargeregattasorganizedinCowesandcruisedaroundtheworldbetween1923and1924.

En 1951,afterthe2ndWorldWar,theshipwassoldtotheCiniFoundationinVenice,renamedGiorgioCiniandonvertedintoatrainingshipforsailors’orphans.Then,in 1978,theGiorgioCiniissold:theCaissed’EpargnefinancedthereturnoftheBelemtoFranceandentrustedtheFondationBelem,createdbytheFrenchsavingsbanks in 1980,withherpreservation.TheFoundationdecidedtouseherasasailtrainingshipopentoawidepublic.TheBelemisGradedhistoricalmonumentsin 1984.

SeveralbigjourneyshavemademarkrecentlyontheBelemhistory:in 1986,theshipparticipatetothecentenaryofStatueofLibertyinNewYork;in 2002,takingadvantageofher“AtlanticOdyssey,”theBelemretracedhermaidenvoyagesbyenteringtheBrazilianportofBelémdoParáfortheveryfirsttimesince1907.In 2008,shecrossedtheNorthAtlanticforbeingtheFrenchambassadortothe400ebirthdayofthefoundingofQuebec;in 2012,thesailingvesselistheguestoftheQueenElizabethIIforherdiamondjubileeandfortheLondonOlympicGames;in 2014,theBelemcomebackonthetracesofGiorgioCiniinVenicefrom18to28april.
