Data Layer Introduced with Sage SalesLogix v6, Sage SalesLogix v7 utilizes a standards-based OLEDB Provider called the SLX Provider. The SLX Provider provides may benefits:

• Controls database access and data security

• Manages synchronization seamlessly

• Allows ADO access to Sage SalesLogix data without the need for a proprietary API

o Developers use standard ADO to access Sage SalesLogix data and the Sage SalesLogix OLE DB Provider automatically enforces user security and provides automatic data synchronization

• NEW SLX Profiler utility available in v7.2 as a tool for customization and troubleshooting the SLX Provider

Several new items to the Architecture!

• Business Rules separated from the presentation layer

• Application Architect

o Provides a database independent profiling application (similar to Microsoft's SQL Profiler) to trace SQL and performance counters throughout the execution path of the SLX Provider

o Minimal overhead when running, no overhead when disabled

o Users can choose to profile any of applications on their computer running the SLX Provider (Windows Client, Web Client, etc. -- even custom applications!)

Application Layer Sage SalesLogix v7.2 introduces the application layer in which Business Rules and Entities are separated from the visual “pages” or “forms” (Presentation Layer). By separating business rules in the Application layer, developers customizing Sage SalesLogix enjoy several additional benefits:

• Easy re-use of common Business Rules

• Straightforward upgrade and Business Rules integration for customization survivability

• Ability to use the same Business Rules across a multi-client deployment (Network, Remote, and Web Clients)

• Develop and maintain Business Rule source code in whatever IDE you choose (Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc…) and deploy to Sage SalesLogix as component pieces

Application Layer also provides Data Persistence Layer

• Translates from the entity to the data layer

• No need to directly access the database layer

Application Layer introduces an object oriented approach to the architecture

• Entities

• Entity Relationships

• Business Rules

Application Layer Entities Entities are a business object, such as account or product that contains business rule methods and events, relationships, properties, and forms.

• Entities can also have other related entities associated with them, either through child relationships or extensions

• Entities provide data persistence, allow the system to auto-generate SQL statements, and provide consistent object interface

• Below is the Application Architect interface for defining Entities

Application Layer Entity Relationships Relationships define rules for how one Entity interacts with another.

• Support for 1:1 and 1:M cardinality

o 1:1 relationships can be defined as extensions of the primary entity

o 1:M relationships represented as “relationship properties” of the primary entity

• Object model representation

o Relationships represented using “dot notation”; 1:M returns collection of related entity

“Account.ShippingAddress.City”

“Account.Contacts”

• Cascading deletes – user definable cascade type

• Below is the Application Architect interface for defining Entities

Application Layer Business Rules Business Rules encapsulate the business logic written in code which is separate from the presentation layer and can be associated to Entities. This allows updates to logic without affecting the user interface or multiple different interfaces to utilize the same logic.

• Business rules are designed to survive upgrades

o Separation of rule definition and implementation

Also facilitates service-oriented design

o Implemented in “steps”

o Primary step implementation can be combined with before/after steps

Avoids costly merging of logic during upgrades

• Below is the Application Architect interface for defining Business Rules

New Web Customization Concepts Several new customization concepts are introduced in the Application Architect. Let’s take a quick look at several of these new concepts.

Virtual File System (VFS) Within Sage SalesLogix v7.2 the file system necessary to deploy an ASP.Net based Web application is stored within the Sage SalesLogix database and accessed or extracted through an interface known as the Virtual File System (VFS). This combines the convenient access of a file-based Web application with the ease of maintenance and storage portability of having your application within a database. This differs from the existing Sage SalesLogix plugin model in that the files stored within the VFS are accessible as regular files.

Web Site Deployment With Sage SalesLogix v7.2 you can manage the deployment of multiple Web sites directly from the Application Architect. For implementations where multiple Web servers/sites are deployed for load balancing purposes, this significantly reduces the maintenance and administrative time necessary for an IT resource to manage the Sage SalesLogix Web Client.

Encapsulated Business Rules (Assemblies) Sage SalesLogix v7.2 Web Client introduces the concept of encapsulating the business rules for a Sage SalesLogix entity separate from the presentation layer (form) used for rendering that entity’s information. The business rules are created in separate .Net Assemblies and are accessed via other business rules or from interface code. The business rules are implementation agnostic, meaning they can have separate implementations (Web Client, Mobile client, custom implementation, and so on) but act as a consistent interface for the business rules of an entity in Sage SalesLogix.

Application Portal Sage SalesLogix v7.2 Application Architect brings the usability of a portal system for management of a Web application to the development experience for the Sage SalesLogix Web

Page 22: Sage SalesLogix v7 - Empath-e...Sage SalesLogix v7.2 Product Bulletin August 2007 All information contained within this Sage SalesLogix bulletin is considered confidential and proprietary

application. The Portal Manager can be used as a traditional content management (Web site) portal manager or an application portal manager (as used for the Sage SalesLogix Web Client)

Entities Tables in Sage SalesLogix v7.2 are now represented to the Web application as entities. Entities represent the abstraction of a table or set of tables available including entity relationships and available properties (fields).

Quick Forms With Sage SalesLogix v7.2, an Application Architect user has the ability to have the system code generate a form based on the Sage SalesLogix entity definition at design time. This enables a business analyst to quickly allow inclusion of a new field or fields into a form for UI display, or to create a new form based on a custom table added in order to extend Sage SalesLogix, both without being presented with the complexities of a form design environment. FAQ

Compatibility What are the general hardware requirements for Sage SalesLogix v7.2? Full details can be found in the Planning Guide and on SupportOnline but generally the requirements are the same as v7.0. We do recommend an optimized Web Server with plenty of RAM – the .NET platform on which Sage SalesLogix is based will require more horsepower for best performance but delivers a better overall experience.

Will Sage SalesLogix v7.2 support Microsoft Office 2007? Yes, Sage SalesLogix v7.2 will be fully compatible with Office 2007. Sage SalesLogix v6.2 SP6 and v7.0 SP1 and newer also support Office 2007.

Will Sage SalesLogix v7.2 support Microsoft Vista? Yes, Sage SalesLogix v7.2 will be fully compatible with Windows Vista OS. Windows Vista Home editions will not be supported.

Since Microsoft is replacing MSDE with SQL 2005 Express, will v7.2 Remote Clients run on SQL 2005 Express? Yes, v7.2 will support SQL Express. However, you will not be required to redeploy current remotes because MSDE will also be supported.

Is Sage SalesLogix compatible with 64-bit operating systems?

The Sage SalesLogix Host Database can reside on a 64-bit SQL Server, as well as a 64-bit Oracle server. There are no plans to recompile any pieces of Sage SalesLogix to be native 64-bit (x64 or IA64). On an x64 box, the Sage SalesLogix pieces would run in 32-bit mode, so there is no intrinsic benefit of having them on a 64-bit machine.

Will we be able to get documents about bandwidths required in v7.2? Yes, we will deliver additional performance information later in 2007 as testing is completed. We expect no major performance or bandwidth differences between v7.0 and v7.2 for Web or Windows Clients.

Is the v7.2 Web Client compatible with the Mac Safari browser? Firefox browser?

We are only qualifying Internet Explorer upon initial v7.2 release. There are no IE-specific dependencies outside the ActiveMail components (like Mail merge and Send SLX support) but we are not qualifying other browsers. We expect to add at least Firefox support in an upcoming release.

Can I upgrade directly from v6.2 or do I need to first upgrade to v7.0? We are supporting migration from v5.2, v6.2, and v7.0 to v7.2.

Are localizations with double-byte characters and Unicode fields supported? Sage SalesLogix supports double-byte characters but is not Unicode compliant at this time. The Web Client will add support for localization for easier translations in an upcoming release.

Are you going to re-introduce a Web-only license? No, we will continue to offer Named Users or Concurrent Users. We are not differentiating between Web and Windows in licenses or pricing.

Does v7.2 require .NET? Yes, Sage SalesLogix v7.2 requires .NET 2.0 for Windows Clients and the Web Server. It is not required to operate the Web Client.

Can you operate v7.2 and previous versions of Sage SalesLogix in the same environment? No, all Clients and the Server components must be upgraded to v7.2. We recommend a virtual machine environment such as VMware to test and develop with multiple versions.

Can a Web Server or Mobile Server support multiple Sage SalesLogix databases? No, all Server components are intended to support a single Sage SalesLogix database. However, a Web Server may be used for additional Web sites unrelated to Sage SalesLogix.

Can we use the v7.2 Web client with our existing Sage SalesLogix v7.0 or v6.2 installation? No, all Clients and the Server components must be upgraded to v7.2.

Is the Web Client in v7.2 a Remote Client? No, while the Web Client can be used remotely, it is not a disconnected client. Sage SalesLogix Mobile can be used in a remote, disconnect mode. The Windows Remote Client is unchanged from v7.0. Future releases will capitalize on a multi-client strategy to allow single development environment as well as remote use by various clients.

Is Marketing and Support available in the Web Client in v7.2? Limited, the feature set for the Web Client is the same as in v7.0. We have focused on Sales and Customer Service Tickets in the v7.2 release, and plan to add the complete Sage SalesLogix features in future releases later this year.

Are the Web Viewer and Customer Portal changing in Sage SalesLogix v7.2? Yes, both will be based on the new Web platform and can utilize the customization tools. Features/functionality are very similar to v7.0.

Will Microsoft Outlook integration change in v7.2? No, client-side windows client sync will continue to use Intellisync; the Web Client uses Advanced Outlook integration for client-side Outlook integration (ActiveMail option). Server-side

integration is available for Contacts, Calendar, and To Dos through Sage SalesLogix Exchange Link.

How do I manage many users on the Web? Is there failover and load balancing utilities? Sage SalesLogix Web utilized standard .NET components at the Web Server. This means standard tools used for load balancing and failover may be used with Sage SalesLogix.

For any popup windows, is there an additional icon on the task bar so the popup doesn't get lost behind other windows? No need! Popups no longer use a separate browser popup window. They are contained within the browser as part of the Web Client.

Are the Administration tools available via Web? No, the Sage SalesLogix Administrator and most other utilities remain Windows applications. There are future plans to allow administration tasks from a Web browser.

We use only Windows Clients now, is Sage SalesLogix Web Client included or a separate purchase? Sage SalesLogix Web Client is included as part of Sage SalesLogix Advanced Edition and higher. Web is not a component of Sage SalesLogix Standard Edition. Users are not designated as Windows or Web – they can use either interface or both! Your environment can support both Windows and Web Client users. What are the major features changes for the Windows Client in v7.2? Sage SalesLogix v7.2 supports Windows Vista. Otherwise, there are no other major features introduced in the Windows Client for v7.2 that differ from v7.0. For Windows Client, v7.2 is effectively a “Service Pack” with focus placed on the Web platform. There is a separate feature comparison document that describes the changed introduced with each version of Sage SalesLogix. Is Sage SalesLogix Mobile included or a separate purchase? Sage SalesLogix Mobile is available as an option, purchased separately.

Customizations What are the customization advantages to the new platform? For prospects and customers of Sage SalesLogix using the Web Client, this release provides several advantages over competitive products:

• Use of AJAX techniques and new Web controls makes the end user experience as feature-rich as many traditional Windows applications.

• Few Web-based products have the extensibility allowed by Sage SalesLogix.

• Use of powerful, industry standard, IDE tools (e.g. Visual Studio) for customization.

• Future-proof your customizations by separating your business rules into .Net assemblies. Future clients supported by Sage SalesLogix will be able to reuse these rules.

What happens to customizations from previous Sage SalesLogix versions?

Sage SalesLogix v7.2 is fully backwards compatible with previous Web customizations as well as all Windows Active and Legacy Forms. Sage SalesLogix v7.2 allows you to continue to use of legacy Web forms, however converting customizations to the new forms/tools is a manual process.

Can I still use the Windows Client in v7.2? Yes, the Windows Client has some minor updates but remains largely unchanged from v7.0.

How do I customize the Windows Client in v7.2? Can I use codeless customization tools for Windows Client? The Sage SalesLogix Architect currently available in v7.0 will continue to be available in v7.2 and used for customizing the Sage SalesLogix Windows Client. In future releases, the Windows Architect will be merged into the Application Architect for Web and Mobile to offer one (codeless and coded) customization environment for all client deployments.

Can I write customizations once and deploy to both Web and Mobile? No, the nature of a Mobile Client and a Web Client are very different and require different customizations. However, all customizations are performed in the common Application Architect environment and share several components to make the customizations as simple as possible. The benefit of this approach is that Sage SalesLogix Mobile takes full advantage of the native Mobile environment – it’s not a “generic” browser-based application that is limited in functionality.

Can I use existing Windows customizations in the Web Client? No, again the Windows and Web Clients are very different and require different customizations. This is a goal for future releases and migration tools are planned for later this year.

When you deploy customization, is it just the deltas or is it a complete refresh to the server? We do a nearly complete refresh on the server in this release. For the future, we are considering adding additional logic in to validate dependencies to add support for updating a single item and its dependencies.

Can you display a unique form or nav bar based on the user's role? Yes, we will have Role support at the SmartPart level. A Web Page is made up of one or more SmartParts (for example, the detail portion of a main view is one SmartPart, and each tab contains a SmartPart).

If a SLX Provider extension or optimization is created, will the WebClient honor the same rules or are additional customizations needed? Those customizations should work the same way for the Web Client – the SLX Provider is still used for all data access. Can you create custom field data types? Yes, but not yet. The High Level Types and Validators have been designed to be extensible. However, we may wait until a follow-on release to expose this externally.

How will this affect Mobile and Web certification now that the development is essentially merged? Same environment – licensing and certication still separate.

Is Sage SalesLogix v7.2 multi-tenent? How does this impact the future of SageCRM and will the new Web Client be available on a Sage .com platform? Multi-Tenant support is not a part of this release, but is under consideration for our roadmap.

We have not announced intentions to provide Sage SalesLogix in a service environment. This release does not affect the SageCRM product or roadmap.

So if a customer needs Windows and Web, we still have to customize twice in v7.2? Yes, for now. Sage SalesLogix v7.2 is the next phase in multi-client strategy. Customizations will be carried forward so you can build customizations in Web and in future leverage in Windows Client without redevelopment. In addition, we are centralizing business logic with web services to enable across all Client interfaces.

Will customizations done in the current Web Client port up to v7.2 easily? Yes, v7.2 will support legacy templates from v6.2.3 and later. Older customizations may be compatible, but will not be guaranteed.

Can we convert Windows Client customizations to the new Web Client? Not initially. We are planning migration tools that will facilitate the identifying the areas that can be converted automatically and the areas that will require manual conversion. We will also provide a tool to help facilitate the manual conversion of the customizations. The tools will follow the v7.2 release. Can you add Web Client dialog boxes without separate browser popups? Yes, dialogs can be modal or modeless within the application (inside the same browser window).
