The15thannualSAGEWorldCupinOdessa,Ukrainewas,asmygoodfriendCarolFurtadowouldsay,STELLAR!Thisyear'seventincludedover300individualparticipants,31competingorobservingcountries,andasuccessfulGlobalBusinessForum.Odessa,truly,isthe“pearloftheBlackSea!”
Wehavecomealongway,baby!Tenyearsago,in2007,weconductedour5thannualSAGEWorldCupinUkraine,andwewereveryproudthatninecountrieswererepresented.In2017,over30arecompetingorobserving.
Thereisnogreatertimeinhistorywheresocialenterprises,andsocially-responsiblebusinesses,areasbadlyneededastheyaretoday.Twoyearsago,theUnitedNationsimplementedoutlinedalistofSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs),otherwiseknownastheGlobalGoals.TheSDGsareauniversalcalltoactiontoendpoverty,protecttheplanetandensurethatallpeopleenjoypeaceandprosperity.
In2006,oneoftheworld’sleadingsocialentrepreneurs,MohammadYunus,sharedtheNobelPeacePrizewithhiscompany,theGrameenBank.Thefollowingyear,in
2007,hewroteabookcalledCreatingaWorldwithoutPoverty.Inthebook,Yunussaid:“Icanpicturelocal,regional,andevenglobalcompetitions,withhundredsofthousandsofparticipantsvyingtocreatethemostpractical,ambitious,andexcitingconceptsforsocialbusinesses.”
Now,tenyearslater,wearemakingYunus’svisionareality.ThousandsofteensaroundtheworldareworkinghardtoachievetheSAGEmission:tocreatethenextgenerationofentrepreneurialleaderswhoseinnovationsandsocialenterprisesaddresssomeoftheworld’smosturgentproblems.
WhyisSAGEsoexciting?Participatingteensusetheircreativityandinnovationtostartbusinessesandsocialenterprisesthataddressunmetneeds.Theyareassistedbyuniversitystudentswhomentorthem,andattheendofeachschoolyear,businessleadersarerecruitedtoserveasjudgesatcompetitions.Nootherprogramcombinesourpowerfulthreecomponents—curriculum,mentoring,andcompetition.Theendresult:SAGEteensbecomesocialchangeagents!
InOdessa,weallwitnessedtheincrediblebusinessesstartedbyteens.CongratulationstothechampionSRBteamfromIsrael,andthechampionSEBteamfromIreland.Bybringingteenstogetherfromdifferentpartsoftheworld,SAGEisexposingourworld’syouthtowhatisgoodaboutothercountries.
OfSAGE'sthreemaincomponents,mostofuswouldagree,Ithink,thatit'sthecompetitionpartthatisthemostexciting.Butweshouldallrememberthat,nomatterwhichteamsendupwinningthefirst-placeSAGEWorldCuptrophies,allparticipatingteensarewinners,asaretheirfamilies,theircommunities,andtheircountries.

Foundedin2002,SAGEisaninternationalnetworkdedicatedtocreatingthenextgenerationofentrepreneurialleaderswhoseinnovationsandsocialenterprisesaddressourworld’smajorunmetneeds.
SAGEispioneeringthefieldofyouthentrepreneurship.Weencouragebusinesstodogoodbydoinggood.
ThefirstSAGEWorldCupwasheldinMay2003withteamsfromPoland,Mexico,TajikistanandtheUnitedStates;theprogramhasnowgrowntoincludesevenU.S.statesand21morecountries.Therearemorethan12,000teensparticipatinginSAGEprogramsatover1,200schoolsaroundtheworld.
SAGEconnectsteenswithhighereducationandthebusinesscommunityinapowerfulpublic/privatepartnership.
Inspring2012,SAGEGlobalbeganofferingaone-semester,12-lessonentrepreneurshipcourseforteens,entitled“TurningRiskintoSuccess”(availableforlicensingbyschools).(InDecember2017,weplantoissuethethirdedition.Staytuned!)
TheIndividualSAGEteam
ToparticipateinSAGE,a“team”ofatleast3teenagersisorganizedandcreatesareal,operatingbusiness.Theteamcanformwithinaclassattheirhighschool,anafterschoolprogram,withinacommunityprogram,orontheirown.Solongastheteenshaveanadultsupervisor,theteamcanparticipateinSAGE.
Allbusinesses,includingfor-profitandnon-profit,maycompeteinSAGE.“Veteran”SAGEteamsmayre-enteritsbusinessforaperiodoftwoyearsbeyonditsfirstyearofcompetition.
Inoperatingtheirentrepreneurshipventures,studentsarejudgedontheir(1)businessoperations,(2)socialimpact,(3)creativity&innovation,(4)sustainabilityand(5)overallpresentationwhichincludesanannualreport,anoralpresentationandliveQ&A.
EachteenageSAGEteamisunique;wewantstudentstobeascreativeandinnovativeaspossible.Becausestudentsoperatetheirbusinessesduringtheyearinanticipationofcompetingattheendoftheyear,theyhavemotivationbeyondgrades.
Thecompetitivetournament
Attheendofeachscholasticyear,SAGEhostsregionaland/ornationalcompetitivetournaments.Eachteamprovidesafour-pagewrittenannualreportandaverbalpresentationtopanelofjurists/evaluators/judgesthatarerecruitedfromleadingmembersinthecommunity.
ThejudgingpanelselectstheSAGEteamthathashadthemostsuccessmeetingthejudgingcriteria.
Thisprocessisauniqueformofbenchmarking,wherestudentscancalibratetheirownbusinesseswiththoseoftheirpeersforfutureimprovement.
Thetoptwoteamsfromeachcountryareinvitedtoparticipateinaninternationaltournament.This

iscalledtheSAGEWorldCup(inAugust2019,wewilllikelybehostinginChile;finalannouncementwillbemadenolaterthanJanuary,2019).Therulesandformatofeachtournamentareidentical.
ForaSAGEteamtoparticipateinaSAGEtournamentitmustoperateabusinessventurethatmeetsasmanyoftheSAGEjudgingcriteriaaspossible.
CompetitionCompetitionProcess
EachSAGEteamwillbegivena35-minutetimeblockatthecompetition.
First10minutes:TheSAGEteamwillimmediatelyhandouttheirannualreportstothejudges.Whilethejudgesarereadingtheannualreport,theteamwillsetupitsequipment,setupprops,etc.Beforetheoralpresentationbegins,judgeswillscorethewrittenannualreportaccordingtotheSAGEjudgingcriteria.
Next13minutes:Theteamwillgivetheiroral/audio-visualpresentation.Teamsareallowedtodemonstratetheirproductsduringthepresentation,buttheycannothandthemouttojudgesforindividualinspection.
Next7minutes:Mandatoryquestionandanswerperiod.
Last5minutes:SAGEteamwillremoveallitsequipmentandexittheroomwhilethejudgesscoretheteam.
WrittenAnnualreport(10minutes)
Teamsmusthandoutawrittenannualreporttobereadandscoredbyjudgesduringthefirst10minutesoftheteam’spresentationtimeslot.
Writtenannualreportsarelimitedtoatotaloffour(4)printedpageson8½by11paper(ortwopagesfronttoback).
Ifateamusesacoverorbackpageitwillcountasoneofthosefourpages.
TeamsmayNOTdistributecopiesofbusinessplans,lettersofcommendation,orsampleproducts.Violationofthisrulewillresultinanautomatic5-pointdeductionfromtheteam’stotalscore.

TheSAGEModel
Eachyear,SAGEorganizesandhostsaseriesofregionalandnationaltournamentswhereteamsofSAGEteensshowcasetheirbusinessestoapanelofinfluentialmembersfromthebusiness,civicandeducationcommunities.SAGEteamsareencouragedtoidentifyaSAGECoachtoguidethem.
Duringtheyear,theyarealsoencouragedtosolicitadvicefrommembersofthebusinesscommunityand,ifpossible,fromuniversitystudents.Attheendofeachyear,allteenageSAGEteamsareinvitedtocompeteintheSAGEnationalcompetition.Thecompetitionsmaybehostedanyplacefacilities&resourcesareavailable.Commonlyusedlocationsincludeacollege,university,nongovernmental-organization(NGO)oragovernmentalorganization(GO).Winnersadvancetothe“SAGEWorldCup.”
FocusonTeenagers
SAGEfocusesontrainingyoungentrepreneursbecause,formany,theircreativeenergyhasnotbeendampenedbylife’sharsherrealities.Morethanone-halfoftheworld’speoplelivebelowtheinternationallydefinedpovertylineof$2aday.Also,morethanhalftheworld’spopulationisundertheageof30.
SAGEbelievesthatteenscantakealeadroleinhelpingtoalleviativepovertythroughtheirinnovationsandcreativity.

GeneralInformationFormingaTeamToparticipateinSAGE,ateamofatleastthreeteenagersisorganized.Thisteammayconsistofstudentsfromthesameschool,inwhichcasetheschoolwouldbethesponsor.OrtheSAGEteammayconsistofanygroupofteenagersthathaveidentifiedanadultadvisororsponsoringorganizations.Samplesponsorsinclude:Boys&GirlsClub,RotaryClub,Lion’sClub,faith-basedorganizations,ormanagersfromlocalstoressuchasBestBuy,Target,Staples,etc.
AschoolmayhaveseveralSAGEteams,aslongaseachteamhasaadvisingteacher,adultoradvisingorganization.Ifahighschooldoesnothaveaformalentrepreneurshipcourse,weencourageittoadoptourcurriculum,“TurningRiskintoSuccess(TRIS):ATeenEntrepreneurshipProgram.”
“Veteran”SAGEteamsmayenterthesamebusinessventureforuptothreeyears.Thesizeoftheteamcanbeasfewasthreemembers;thereisnoupperlimit.
TheSAGEteammaybepartofanexistingclass,suchasaneconomics,accounting,generalbusiness,likeVirtualEnterprise,oritcanbeanactivestudentorganization(e.g.,StudentGovernment,FBLA,DECA,JuniorAchievement,RotaryInteract,FFA,FHA-Hero,SkillsUSA,andTechnologyStudentAssociation).SAGEinnotacompetitorforexistinghighschoolbusinessorganizations,butwenowstronglyadvocatethatschoolsuseourTRIScurriculum.
Thekeytostartingateamistofindanenthusiasticgroupofteenageleaderswhoareinterestedinstartingtheirownbusinessventure,alongwithanadultallywhoiswillingtoencourageandsupporttheirparticipationasaSAGEsponsor.Onceagroupofteenshasdecidedtoparticipate,theallywhobecomestheiradvisershouldcontacttheSAGEstateornationalcoordinatorandnotifythemoftheirintenttoparticipate.
Note:eachstateorcountryhasitsowntimetable;however,allnationalSAGEtournamentsmustbecompletedbyJune15,2019inordertoallowenoughtimetoobtaintravelvisastotheSAGEWorldCupandtoarrangeforaccommodationsattheWorldCup.
ThereisnofeeorcosttojointheSAGEnetwork.
ToqualifytoenteraSAGEtournament,thefollowingconditionsmustbemet:
• Ateammustconsistofatleastthreecontributingteenagerswhooperateabusinessthattheyhavecreated;ahighschoolororganizationmayadviseseveralSAGEteams;
• Thereisnoupperlimittothenumberofteensthatcanbeamemberofoneteam;• TheminimumandmaximumagerequirementsforstudentpresentersfortheirSAGEteam
mustbebetweentheagesof13and19.Specifically,astudentmustbeatleastage13yearsoldonorbeforeJune15,2019andnoolderthan19yearsoldonorpriortoJune15,2019.
• ASAGEteammustmeetcertainbenchmarksthroughouttheyear;thatcountry’sSAGENationalCoordinatorestablishesthesebenchmarks.Forexample,intheUnitedStates,suchbenchmarksare:
o ByDecember1,2018:SubmitaletterofintenttocompetetoSAGEHomeOfficeinChico,CA.Thislettermustalsoidentifythesponsor(e.g.,highschool;organization;adultally).
o ByApril15,2019:[email protected];thereportshouldaddresseachofthefivejudgingcriteria.

o EndofMayorearlyJune:TraveltotheSAGEUSANationalTournament.• EachSAGEteamcanonlyenterthesamebusinessforamaximumofthreeyears.• Teamswillbejudgedontheirabilitytodemonstratemeasurableresults.Judgingcriteria

• Stateand/ornationalcompetitionsusuallytakeplacebetweenFebruaryandthefirsthalfofJuneeachyear.Countrycoordinatorsshouldplantheircompetitionssuchthatthenationalchampionteamshaveadequatetimetoacquiretheirtravelvisas.ByJune15,2019allNationalCompetitionsshouldbecompleted.TheNationalChampionsandtherunnersupfromeachcountryadvancetotheSAGEWorldCup,whichhastentativelybeenscheduledtotakeplaceinAugustorSeptember.ThehostcityandcountrywillbeannouncednolaterthanJanuary31,2019.

*Teamsshouldbring40writtenannualreportswiththemtoeachcompetition.Thewrittenannualreportislimitedtofourpages,includingcoverpage.Inaddition,teamscanhavecopiesofmediaattentiontheyhavereceivedfortheirprojects(e.g.,magazinearticles,newspaperarticles,webpages,etc.).TeamsmayNOTdistributesampleproducts(thoughtheymaydisplaythem),orcopiesofbusinessplansorlettersofcommendation.Violationofthisrulewillresultinanautomatic5-pointdeductionfromthetotalpointsgiven.However,presentersMAYdistributetheirpersonalbusinesscards.

SAGECoachOneofthebestresourcesforaSAGEteamisasupportiveadultoradultorganizationthatbelievesinthemissionandgoalsoftheteammembers.Thispersonisreallyyour“SAGECoach.”Thismaybeateacher,adultally,parent,businessleaderorsomeotheradultadvisor.Heorshewilladmireyouforyourdesiretobecomeanentrepreneur.Whentheprospectivecoachlearnsaboutyourbusinessidea,heorshemustbewillingtoenthusiasticallysharetheirexpertise,theirtimeandsometimestheirfinancialresourcestohelpyouaccomplishyourgoals.
EachSAGEteammusthaveanadultSAGECoach.ExamplesofaSAGEcoachinclude:

WhatqualitiesshouldbeapossessedbyyourSAGECoach?
Willingnesstobearolemodel.Ideally,thecoachissomeonewhoisasuccessfulentrepreneur,orapersonororganizationthatiscommittedtothepowerofentrepreneurshiptochangetheworld.
WillingnesstocommitoneormoreofthethreeT’s:Time,Talent,andTreasure.TheSAGEcoachwillcommitaminimumamountoftimetoadvisetheteamasitidentifieslaunches,operatesandassessesitbusinessventure.Ofcourse,itwillbehelpfulifthecoachhasaspecialtalentthatcomplementstheSAGEteam’sventure;also,thesponsorshoulddoitsbesttohelptheteamshowcasetheirventureattheSAGEtournament.TheidealSAGEcoachwillbeinstrumentalinhelpingaSAGEteamdeliveritsbusinessventureinawaythathaspotentialtomakeatrueimpactinthelivesofitsowners,customers,suppliers,employeesandcitizensinthecommunity.

SAGEteamswilltraveltoanationalcompetitionsometimebetweenFebruaryandJune15(datesandlocationspending).Somecountriesmayopttoconductregional/provincialcompetitions,andinvitetheregionalwinnerstothenationalevent.
AllnationalcompetitionsmustbecompletedbyJune15inordertogivetheSAGEWorldCuphostcountryenoughtimetohelpeachSAGEdelegationsecurevisasandplantheevent.
ThefirstANDsecondplaceteamsfromthenationalcompetitionswillbeinvitedtotheSAGEWorldCup.
ThecompetitionisoftenhostedbyauniversityorSAGECoordinatorinyourarea.Atthecompetition,SAGEteamsareassignedto“leagues,”justlikeinathleticcompetitions.Eachteampresentstheresultsoftheiractivitiestoapanelofjudges.TheSAGEteamthatisratedthehighestinthecountryisknownastheSAGECountryChampion.
Eachteammakesa35-minutelivepresentationtoapanelofbusinessandcivicleaders(10minutessetupandhandoutannualreportstojudges,13minutesoralpresentation,7minutesforquestionsandanswers,and5minutesforexitingtheroomwhilethejudgesscoretheteam).ThispresentationdescribeshowaSAGEteam’sbusinessactivitieshavemetthejudgingcriteria.

OralPresentation
Competitionpresentersshouldwritetheirownpartsofthepresentationsotheyareveryfamiliarwiththecontents.Visualdocumentationshouldaccompanytheoralpresentation.Presentationsvary,withteamsusingslideprojectors,videomonitors,orcomputerpresentationsforvisualdocumentation.Teamsmaydemonstratesampleproducts,buttheyarenotpermittedtohandthemoutforjudgestoexamine.
Youmaywanttoaskthecollegementors,youradvisoryboard,oryourspeechanddramateachersatyourschooltocritiqueyourpresentationandmakesuggestionsforimprovement.Presentationteammembersneedtobefamiliarwitheveryactivity.
Presentationdetails
EachSAGEteamwillbegivena35-minutetimeblockatthecompetition.Duringthefirst10minutes,whilejudgesreadandscoretheannualreports,theteamwillsetupitsequipment,setupprops,etc.Theteamwillthenhave13minutestogivetheiroral/audio-visualpresentation,followedbya7-minutemandatoryquestionandanswerperiod.Finally,inthelast5minutes,studentswillremovealltheirequipmentandexittheroomwhilethejudgesscoretheteam.
Anyone(includingtheSAGECoach)mayassisttheteamwithsetuporoperationofAVequipment.However,onlythestudentteammembersmayparticipateinthepresentationoranswerquestionsfromthejudges.
WhileweencourageSAGEteamstodemonstratetheirproductsduringthepresentation,teamsshouldbecarefulnottouseharmfulingredientsortechniquesthatmaycreateproblemswiththeconferencevenue.Ifthepresentationmaterialsappeartobeinviolationofthisrule,intheopinionoftheleaguecoordinator,theteamwillbebannedfromusingsuchingredientsortechniques.

Practicetimeinpracticerooms
EveryeffortwillbemadebytheSAGEtournamenthosttoallowSAGEteamstopracticeindesignatedpracticerooms.Teamsshouldberespectfulofotherteams,andonlyremainintheroomfor15-minuteperiodsunlessnootherteamsarewaiting.

2.MembersoflocalTV,radio,ornewspapermediahavefullaccesstoallpresentationroomsatanytime.Allteamsshouldbepreparedforthepossibilityofthemediatakingvideoorphotosoftheirpresentation.ByparticipatinginSAGE,allguests(e.g.,studentpresenters,observers,judges,coaches,teachers,etc.)implicitlyallowtheirfacesandimagestobeusedinfuturemediaforSAGE.
SAGEWorldCup2019ThehostcountryforeachSAGEWorldCupwillbeselectedonorbeforeJanuary31.Wewillprovidemoredetailsathttp://sageglobal.orgastheyarefinalized.TheWorldCupwilltakeplaceinAugust.

TheSAGEhost,workingwithSAGEGlobal,intendstopayformealsandforlodgingforeachofficialcountrydelegation.Thenumberofmeals,lodgingnights,andsizeoftheofficialcountrydelegationwillbefinalizedbyMay30.
Airfare,visafees,andgroundtransportationtoandfromtheairportatthehostcityaretheresponsibilityofeachnationaldelegation.
