I am happy to see the growing list of students who are being felicitated every year for their various achievements. I take this opportunity to appreciate the efforts of the students and parents for consistently performing well. I take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the teachers who have been associated with the school for more than ten years now. You have given true meaning to success, as you have gone beyond the common definions of success, such as being wealthy, having a lot of tangibles and earned degrees. Quite the opposite: your success is not measured with the above-named factors, but instead the number of people who are able to live a beer and more advanced life that you have created. Thank you teachers once again for making this world a beer place for everyone. I thank the Middle wing Coordinator Ms. Tanya Jayakrishnan and her team for bringing out this edion of Sage. Willful waste makes a woeful want.

An activity was conducted on 19th August, 2016, for the students of the Primary Wing to make them aware of the idea behind the concept of “Create from Waste”. The students enthusiastically brought waste materials from home like old bottles, CDs; old notebook covers etc. to create beautiful objects like pen stands, fish, and faces.

Craft activities allow children to think creatively and engage their imagination to develop their own perspective. In Class Prep an activity was conducted on 15th July, 2016, where children were provided with different cut outs and colorful papers. The students very creatively created stick puppet, headgears, and finger puppets. Children enjoyed a lot by creating an animal world with their magical hands and creative minds. The activity helped them to enhance their visual and creative imagination and also sharpened their fine motor skills.

Go Green Campaign“Green is the prime color of the world, which increases the loveliness around”. Our school on account of World Environment Day organized a plantation program on 13th July’ 2016 to create social awareness about the importance of tree plantation. The school took a wonderful initiative by adopting a park (MahaRanaPratap Park) at Parvatipuri Colony in Gurubagh to beautify it. The campaign commenced with the cleaning of the park where students uprooted weeds and grasses to plant saplings. It was followed by a general discussion with the residents to create awareness. Both students and teachers felt proud of being a part of the social event which is initiated by Delhi Public School Varanasi. Not only students but also the people living around and adjacent to the area realized the importance of green surrounding.

Green WeekMajor Activity “Green Week” was a stepping stone towards inculcating the fact that trees are the essence of our lives. The week started with the launch assembly where the students were briefed about the theme. Various activities like nature walk, watering the plants, tree making and paper bag making enhanced children’s knowledge of plants and their importance. The week culminated by organizing a rally where the students spread the message of a green, clean and pure environment. They also dressed up as an object they get from trees and spoke a few lines about the same. Videos on ‘Say no to plastics’ and ‘Photosynthesis’ were shown which vividly explained the concept and inspired the students not to use plastic.

Huff And Puff“In the Air and all around”Science skills are important in every part of our life and by doing experiments, children learn better. Class Prep had an activity to sort heavier and lighter objects through air pressure. Children blew the objects. The lighter objects moved farther whereas the heavier ones did not move from their place. Students drew and marked the objects beautifully in the observation sheet. The activity helped them to sort and compare the objects through air pressure.

“I can create a Greener Earth”Today’s scenario is making our tiny tots understand the importance of cleaner and greener Earth. With this thought, an activity was conducted on 15th July’ 2016 in the primary wing to motivate our little ones to do their bit in making the Earth greener and cleaner. The students of Nursery cre-ated beautiful thermocol water cans during this activity, with the help of their teachers. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students.

A t r y s t w i t h a w i z a r d - MS DhoniThe 11th of July was a red letter day for our school when M.S. Dhoni, India’s finest cricketer and an identity whose fame resonates in every part of the world, visited the school and addressed the students.

The School has started the cricket - ACE Academy where students are given professional training in cricket under the support and guidance of the world famous cricketer, M.S Dhoni. He inaugurated the Ace Academy and gave a very motivational speech amidst a thunderous crowd of students, teachers and the proud parents of the members of the cricket academy. He inspired the young children that games and sports are equally important in life and if a balance is made between studies and sports one can easily reach one’s goal in life. The audience listened with bated breath, the words of wisdom coming straight from the man whose genius in the cricket field is unparalleled.

He catered individually to the queries of students of the Ace Academy and educated them about the nuances of the game and its pursuance in the field. It was an informal session wherein a curious group of students came up with their numerous questions. The excitement was soaring high as their queries were answered.

This beautiful moment was captured in photographs that will remind one and all of this beautiful tryst with this wizard in the world of cricket. The man with The Midas Touch, as he is popularly known as, left his golden touch with the students wishing for a very bright future for them.

The day shall be earmarked as one of the greatest in the pages of the history of the school.

The fine art of writingWriting GenresA genre may be described as a style or category of art, music or literature. It is a label that characterizes elements a reader can expect in a work of literature. To put it simply, it is a broad category marked by similarities in style or subject matter. The major categories of literature are fiction and Non- fiction, out of which fiction seems to be more popular. Some common genres of fiction include drama, fairy tales, folk tales, folk lore, horror, humor, mythology, short stories and science fiction etc.The genre that has remained an all time favorite among all age groups of readers is the thriller/mystery with many wannabe authors aspiring to master this particular art. Here are some tips to come up with a bestselling thriller-Some Directions to get started:

Choose a time period for your story. It could be pre-historic or may be the dystopian world. Create a protagonist. Think about all the qualities he/she should have. Is he all good? Oh that’s so boring. Bring in some shades of grey to his character. Let him fight the inner as well as outer demons. Bring out the flaws too, that make him a human Complex Characterization- Do the same with the rest of your cast. Create an antagonist too who is not all black. Make him justified in what he does. Develop the personality of each character- basics- Male or Female? Name? Age? Physical Attributes? How do they get involved in the story? Their life? Their tastes? And so on and so forth. Think of a plot and a mystery- Use your old friends- Who? What? Where? Why? How? When? Using the skeleton of the plot, sketch a summary with as many details as you can think of. Don’t worry about putting them in order. Just jot them down somewhere so that you don’t forget them later. Experience the emotion. How can you do that? Concentrate on recalling an emotional moment in your life, and re create each sense in your memory (sight, smell, touch, sound etc). Now transfer this to the page. Begin Writing. Start building on your basic premise and the ideas jotted down and weave your plot around it. Initially introduce the characters and the setting and then thicken the plot or maybe start with the most thrilling experience itself. Be sure to give the reader as vivid a

The ROMANCE NOVEL or romantic novel discussed in this article is the mass-market literary genre. Novels of this type of genre fictionplace their primary focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people, and must have an “emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.” There are many subgenres of the romance novel including fantasy, historical romance, paranormal fiction, and science fiction. Walter Scott defined the literary fiction form of romance as “a fictitious narrative in prose or verse; the interest of which turns upon marvellous and uncommon incidents”

In a modern sense, COMEDY refers to any discourse or work generally intended to be humorous or amusing by inducing laughter, especially in theatre, television, film, and stand-up comedy. The origins of the term are found in Ancient Greece. In the Athenian democracy, the public opinion of voters was influenced by the political satire performed by the comic poets at the theaters.

description as you can without overdoing it. Bring in dialogues, suspense and twists and turns.Bring in a twist. There’s nothing better in a thriller than a stunning twist to keep the reader hooked. Pause after a scene and ask yourself- “What would a reader expect to happen next?” Create a list of possible ideas and discard them right away. Do something totally unexpected, like- • Heart Attack • Accident • The siren of a police’ car • A mourning shadow At the end reveal the mystery. Remember to clear all the mystery without leaving a shadow of doubt. There is nothing worse than leaving the reader confused. Figures of speech. The beginning and the end of your story must be very catchy to sustain the interest of the reader and to keep him gripped till the very end. Use dramatic words, metaphors, personification to make it more interesting. Check the Story. Make it a point to write, check, re check and then check the story again. You have to be certain that it makes sense. Icing on the cake. Come up with an attractive and cool title for your story. Make sure that the title should get your reader interested. All the best and happy writing. Hoping to see your name in print soon!!

Writing GenresTRAGICOMEDY is a literary genre that blends aspects of both tragic and comic forms. Most often seen in dramatic literature, the term can variously describe either a tragic play which contains enough comic elements to lighten the overall mood or a serious play with a happy ending.

FICTION is the classification for any story created by the imagination and, therefore, not based strictly on history or fact. Fiction can be expressed in a variety of formats, including writings, live performances, films, television programs, video games, and role-playing games, though the term originally and most commonly refers to the major narrative forms of literature including the novel, novella, short story, and play. Fiction constitutes an act of creative invention, so that faithfulness to reality is not typically assumed; in other words, fiction is not expected to present only characters who are actual people or descriptions that are factually true.

SATIRE is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement.Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society.A feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—”in satire, irony is militant”—but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. This “militant” irony or sarcasm often professes to approve of (or at least accept as natural) the very things the satirist wishes to attack.

DRAMA is the specific mode of fiction represented in performance. The term comes from a Greek word meaning “action” (Classical Greek:δρᾶμα, drama), which is derived from “to do” (Classical Greek:δράω, drao). The two masks associated with drama represent the traditional generic division between comedy and tragedy. They are symbols of

the ancient Greek Muses, Thalia & Melpomene.

Ms Garima Singh

NON-FICTION is content (often, in the form of a story) whose creator, in good faith, assumes responsibility for the truth or accuracy of the events, people, and/or information presented. In contrast, a story whose creator explicitly leaves open if and how the work refers to reality is usually classified as fiction.Nonfiction, which may be presented either objectively or subjectively, is traditionally one of the two

main divisions of narratives (and, specifically, prose writing), the other traditional division being fiction, which contrasts with nonfiction by dealing in information, events, and characters expected to be partly or largely imaginary.

TRAGEDY (from the Greek: τραγῳδία, tragōidia[a]) is a form of drama based on human suffering that invokes an accompanyingcatharsis or pleasure in audiences.[2][3] While many cultures have developed forms that provoke this paradoxical response, the termtragedy often refers to a specific tradition of drama that has played a unique and important role historically in the self-definition ofWestern civilisation.[2][4] That tradition has been multiple and discontinuous, yet the term has often been used to invoke a powerful effect of cultural identity and historical continuity—”the Greeks and the Elizabethans, in one cultural form; Hellenes and Christians, in a common activity,” as Raymond Williams puts it.

HORROR is a genre of fiction which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten, scare, disgust, or startle their readers or viewers by inducing feelings of horror and terror. Literary historian J. A. Cuddon has defined the horror story as “a piece of fiction in prose of variable length... which shocks or even frightens the reader, or perhaps induces a feeling of repulsion or loathing”. It creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere. Horror is frequently supernatural, though it can be non-supernatural. Often the central menace of a work of horror fiction can be interpreted as a metaphor for the larger fears of a society.
