Safety valvesFor the protection of thermostatically protected closed-circuit water heating systems with Supply temperatures of up to 150°C for all static heights according to TRD 721, DIN 4751 and DIN EN 12828.

Dimensioning

Safety valvesSafety valves protect all plant components from inadmissible excess pressure. For dimensioning all possible load cases must be taken into account (such as heating of boilers with closed connections, dynamic pressures etc.).Each heat generator of a heating system must be secured by at least a safety valve to protect against exceeding the maximum operating pressure.If more than one safety valve is used in parallel, the smaller valve must have a blow-off power of at least 40% of the total.Safety valves must be designed so that the maximum permissible operating pressure of the parts that can occur in the heating system, or in a part thereof, may be secured.

Safety valve have to:- Comply with EN ISO 4126-1:2013, however a minimum

diameter of DN 15 is necessary.- Open at a pressure not exceeding the maximum design

pressure of the system, and they must be able to prevent exceeding the maximum operating pressure by more than 10%;

- Be installed so that the pressure loss of the connection pipes does not exceed 10% and the pressure drop of the blow-off pipe does not exceed 3% of the nominal pressure of the safety valve

The safety valves must be accessible on the heat generator or built into the supply pipe in it’s immediate vicinity without a barrier between the heat generator and the safety valve. Spring-loaded safety valves are to be installed with the spring bonnet pointing vertically upward. To ensure a satisfactory operation of the safety valves they must be installed in such a way that the safety valve is not exposed to any impermissible static, dynamic or thermal loads. Appropriate protection devices must be applied if the medium that discharges upon actuation of the valve can lead to direct or indirect hazards to people or the environment. Always pay attention to possible fumes discharging from the relief bores in the spring bonnet.Special precautions may be necessary for heat generator over 300 kW. The exhaust pipe of the safety valve must be equipped with a expansion trap ET close to the valve and with an ending outdoor exhaust pipe.Expansion traps are not necessary in cases when each heat generator is equipped with an additional temperature and additional pressure limiter For indirectly heated heat generators (heat exchangers), the dimensioning is possible according to the water outflow performance, if the escape of steam through the upcoming temperature or pressure conditions is excluded. See column QNsvW for the respective product.

Heat generator All valves must as safety-relevant component bear a CE marking according PED 97/23/EC and should be type tested.Safety valves with code letter H:These safety valves are the most commonly used and known also as the “diaphragm safety valve”. These valves are approved according to EN 12828 only with pressure rates of 2.5 and 3.0 bar. H valves may be used only up to an operating pressure of max 3 bar . The discharge capacity refers to the data sheet column QNsvV.

Safety valves with code letter D/G/H:If the opening pressure differs from 2.5 and 3.0 bar or if the power exceeds 900 kW, D/G/H - safety valves must be used. The discharge capacity refers to the data sheet column QNsvV.

Hot water generation plantsOnly safety valves with the code letter W are allowed in hot water heating systems (potable water) according to DIN 4753. IMI Pneumatex can supply valves of the series W on request.

Solar energy systemsSolar energy systems can use DSV... SOL safety valves (max 160 °C) or the valves DSV... DGH (max. 120 °C). Valves for higher temperatures are available on request.

Cold water systemsIn cold water systems in which evaporation can be excluded, DSV ... DGH series valves can be used. The dimensioning can be done according to the maximum discharge capacity specified in column QNsvW.

SupplySupply connection pieces for safety valves are to be kept as short as possible and should be designed so that the pressure loss is not higher than max. 3% of the response pressure of the safety valve.

Removal of condensate dischargeIn the event of possible condensate formation the pipes or the valves themselves (in flanged version) must be fitted at their lowest point with a continuously operating condensate discharge device. Hazard-free removal of the condensate or medium discharge must be ensured. The body, pipes and expansion trap must be protected against freezing.

Blowing-off pipe / backpressureThe blow-off pipe of the safety valves must be designed to ensure that the required mass flow can be discharged pressure-free during the blowing-off process. In safety valves DGH with metal bellows a backpressure of up to max. 4 bar has no impact on the response pressure of the safety valve.

Expansion trapsExpansion traps are used in the blow-off pipe of the safety valves and serve the phase separation of steam and water. A water discharge pipe must be connected at the lowest part of the expansion trap to dissipate safe and visible leaking heating water. The exit pipe for steam must be run from the high point of the expansion trap outdoors.Expansion traps must be used according to DIN EN 12828 for heat generators with a rated thermal input > 300 kW. For indirectly heated heat generators (heat exchangers), expansion traps are not required, if there is no danger of vapour on the secondary side.

Blow off capacityQNsvV: Related to steam flow for direct fired heat generator (e.g. gas, oil, electric, ...).QNsvW: Related to water flow for indirect fired heat generator (e.g. water to water heat exchanger) in case the temperature of the primary circuit tpr does not enable a possible vaporisation of the secondary system water. The values given in the table must not be exceeded (wet vapour pressure pv(tpr) ≤ psv).
