How hard hats protect youHard hats protect you by providing the followingfeatures.

• A rigid shell that resists and deflects blows to the head

• A suspension system inside the hat that acts as ashock absorber

• A hard hat shields your scalp, face, neck andshoulders against splashes, spills and drips

• Hard hats have additional accessories added such as face shields, goggles, hoods or hearingprotection

Safety starts at the top and the ProChoicerange of hard hats and accessories have beendesigned to provide maximum protection andcomfort.

ProChoice understands Australian conditionsand has developed this range to give efficientair-flow, accommodate sweatbands and toaccept additional sun protection accessories, yet still be lightweight and robust. Not a badeffort you’ll agree.

All ProChoice hard hats are manufacturedunder an ISO9002:1994 QualitySystem. Every hard hat is tested and inspected to AS/NZS1801 so it meets the needs of construction and industry in Australia.

Head protectionPrevention of head injuries is an important factor inevery safety program. A single injury can handicap anemployee for life, or it can be fatal. Surveys in the UKhave noted that most workers who suffered impactinjuries to the head were not wearing headprotection. The majority of workers were injuredwhile performing their normal jobs at their regularworksites.

More than one-half of the workers were struck on thehead while they were looking down and almost three-tenths were looking straight ahead. While a third ofthe unprotected workers were injured when bumpinginto stationary objects. These actions injured onlyone-eighth of hard hat wearers. Elimination orcontrol of a hazard leading to an accident should, ofcourse, be given first consideration, but manyaccident-causing head injuries are of a type difficultto anticipate and control. Where these conditionsexist, head protection must be worn to protectagainst injury!

Suggested applications for protective headwear

• Agriculture• Construction• Food Processes• Logistics and Distribution• Manufacturing• Mining• Oil and Gas Industry• Waste and Water Treatment

All safety hard hats worn on constructionsites should conform with the requirementsof AS1801 – Industrial Safety Helmets andbe maintained in accordance with AS1800 –The Selection, Care and Use of IndustrialSafety Helmets.(www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/Publications/OHS/SafetyGuides/helmets)

Head Protection Questions and AnswersHHB

Detachable Hard Hat Brim HHB• Durable cotton• Excellent sun protection with neck flap• Available in white, navy blue and green• Sold individually• Quantity per carton -12

What is the life span of an industrial safety hard hat? There is a lot of confusion as to what is considered to be anacceptable working life of a safety hard hat. Unfortunately therecan be no hard and fast rules concerning this. There is no test inthe Australian / European Standard to cover this, and it would bedifficult, if not impossible to devise such a test.

In use, head protection is generally treated with a lack of care, often being thrown or dropped, used as a receptacle for allmanner of items, or carried on the rear window shelf of a vehicle.None of these actions are conducive to continued performance.

Users should regularly inspect both the hard hat shell and itsharness for signs of wear and tear.

Replace your hard hat when:• Cracks appear in the shell• The shiny surface appears dull or chalky• The shell becomes brittle• Impact with hard hat surface has been made

Replace your harness when:• The harness become brittle• One or more of the mounts break off• The harness will no longer hold securely to the head• The harness straps break or become worn

Inspect your hard hats before and after each use. Although thereis no set service life for hard hats, we recommend replacementafter no more than 5 years.

What testing do our hard hats undergo? All ProChoice hard hats are manufactured under anISO9002:1994 Quality System. Every batch of hard hats that youreceive will have been tested and inspected to AS/NZS1801before you receive them.

Date stamp? Is that like a best before date? No, we are required by the Australian / European Standard tomark each hard hat with the month and year of manufacture. This should not be used as a basis for determining the life of anindustrial safety hard hat.

Does the harness do anything except keep the hard hat on the head?Yes! The harness is an integral part of all ProChoice hard hatsand works by stretching to absorb some of the energy of theimpact. The harness also spreads the force of an impact evenlyover the wearer’s head minimising the risk of harm to thewearer.

Can I modify my hard hat’s shell - such as drill someventilation holes or rig up a lamp on the front?

No, this would definitely affect the performance of your hard hat.If you feel that extra ventilation is needed, then there is theProChoice model that does include ventilation holes at the top ofthe hard hat.

Can I use a chin strap supplied by a different company? No. To conform with the Australian Standard 1801 it becamenecessary to alter the design of our chin straps slightly.

Under this standard it became necessary for the chin strap tobreak when a specific load is applied. A ProChoice chin strapmay break in a different manner to another company’s chin strapso you should only use a ProChoice chin strap on a ProChoicehard hat.

Also Available Plastic Hard Hat Brim HHPB(not Pictured)• Available in white, orange and navy blue• UV stabilised plastic, removable and

washable neck flap• Holds shape in hot and wet climates• Sold individually• Quantity per carton -12

Workplace Respiratory Hazards

DustIs comprised of solid particles that can range in size, including those that can not be seen with the nakedeye. Dusts usually occur when a solid material isbroken down eg: cutting, sanding, grinding.

MistConsist of tiny droplets of moisture formed whenliquids are sprayed or mixed eg: spray painting, dipping. In high concentration of mists, this can turninto fog and obscure vision.

FumesAre tiny metallic or metal oxide particles given offwhen metals are heated. Fine particulates are formedas the fume cools and condenses eg: welding, smelting.

GasesAre substances that become airborne at roomtemperature and are often invisible eg: Chlorine,Hydrogen sulfide, Carbon monoxide.

VapoursAct like gases except they are formed by theevaporation from substances which are normallyliquid or solid at room temperature eg: Methylatedspirits, petrol.

Oxygen DeficiencyWhen the oxygen content of a given atmosphere dropsbelow 19.5%, the atmosphere is considered “oxygendeficient”. This is most likely to occur in confinedspaces, sewers, ship holds, silos, storage tanks.

NOTE: Monitoring devices should always be used to check oxygenlevels of an unknown environment. Conventional dust masks are notsuitable for oxygen deficient situations.

ProChoice is recognised as Australia’s leadingsupplier of industrial gloves since 1992.

The company has grown to include acomprehensive range of personal protectiveequipment and has also increased the range andquality of gloves sourced from around the world.

ProChoice is Australia’s most comprehensiverange of protective, safety and work gloves tomeet any industry requirement.

ProChoice has developed its glove range tomeet industry requirements and standards. Most of the gloves we sell comply withEuropean Standards. These standards havebeen adopted in Australia and New Zealand asAS/NZ 2161:1998. They are exactly the same asthe European standards EN374, EN388, EN407,EN420 and EN511.

Where applicable, gloves suitable for usewithin the food industry conform to HACCPaccreditation and gloves suitable for medicalexamination are TGA listed.

Gloves for handling chemicals, for gardening, rigging, medical and gripping; for men, womenand those in between; for hot and cold weather, for comfort, durability and hygiene. ProChoiceis the answer for excellent hand protection.

Anytime you require employees to wear any type ofPPE, you must teach them to wear it in the propermanner and train them to use it. Where possible, eliminate the hazard or process creating the hazardthrough administrative changes. If that is not feasible, engineering controls such as guards or equipmentchanges should be investigated. Use training andsigns to communicate with employees and help themrecognise hazards.

For an effective hand protection program:• Eliminate the hazard completely or use

engineering controls to reduce the risk of injury• Choose appropriate hand protection to fit the task• Train employees to recognise hazards and use

hand protection• Make it easy for employees to replace hand

protection when it becomes worn or damaged• Monitor and police the program

19

Why gloves are an important aspect of PersonalProtection Equipment (PPE)PPE and hand protection in particular are seen as thelast barrier against hazards. That doesn’t mean it’snot vitally important. In Australia in 2002 there were amassive 29,142 workers compensation claims forhand injuries (National Workers’ CompensationStatistics Database – nosi2.nohsc.gov.au).

EN388• Resistance to absrasion• Blade cut resistance• Tear resistance• Puncture resistance

EN407• Resistance to flammability• Resistance to contact heat• Resistance to convective heat• Resistance to radiant heat• Resistance to small/large splashes

of molten metal

EN374• Resistance to chemical hazards; the

measurement of time for a chemical topermeate through the glove material

Chemical Resistant Gloves

A General Guide to the Safe Handling of ChemicalsKnow the physical and health hazards associated with the chemicals you are using.Carefully read the chemical's label and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using achemical for the first time. Also review the appropriate Standard Operating Procedure. These documents will provide any special handling information. After the potential hazardsassociated with the chemicals and the experimental processes are evaluated you canmodify work procedures so that workplace hazards are minimised or eliminated.

Keep the following guidelines in mind when handling chemicals: • Prior to working with a chemical, always review the MSDS• Do not work alone with chemicals. If you must work alone, you must notify someone as to

where you will be and when• Use required personal protective equipment (PPE). Eye protection is always appropriate

• Always use chemicals with adequate ventilation or in a chemical fume hood. Refer to theMSDS and the Standard Operating Procedure to determine what type of ventilation is needed

• Keep your hands and face clean. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling anychemical and whenever you leave the work area.

• Keep eyewash stations and safety showers, fire extinguishers, fire alarm stations, and exits clear at all times

• Never eat, drink, apply cosmetics or wear open shoes in a chemical handling environment• Remove PPE, including gloves before entering common areas• Chemical and blood spill kits must be readily available• Do not store food in refrigerators used for chemicals• Ensure chemicals are properly labelled• Do not use equipment unless you have been properly instructed

Kevlar Gloves/Accessories General Glove Guidelines

Glove selection• Select gloves which are resistant to the chemicals you may be exposed to. Consult the

relevant Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the chemical you are using which mayrecommend a particular glove material. No glove is completely resistant to a chemical.Even the best chemically resistant glove will breakdown after repeated chemicalexposure.

• Select gloves of the correct size and fitting; gloves that are too small are uncomfortableand may tear whereas overlarge gloves may interfere with dexterity.

• Latex allergy alert! Do not wear latex gloves if you think you are susceptible to or have alatex allergy.

Inspection• Before use, all gloves should be inspected for indications of degradation (swelling,

cracking, shrinking, or discolouration) and any signs of holes or punctures. A damaged glove should be immediately taken out of service.

• Change gloves frequently, especially thinner disposable gloves that have been exposedto chemicals. If a glove becomes contaminated it should be removed and discarded assoon as possible.

• Dispose of contaminated gloves properly. Do not attempt to re-use disposable gloves.

Removal• Remove gloves before leaving the immediate work site to prevent contamination of door

knobs, light switches, telephones, etc. • When removing gloves, pull the cuff over your hand and turn the glove inside-out. Wash

your hands thoroughly with soap and water after wearing gloves

The ProChoice commitment to the safety of Australian’s doesn’tstop with Personal Protective Equipment.

Safe practices, common sense and awareness are also essentialto preventing accidents.

Safety is contagious, spread it.

Your attitude to safety is not only important to your own welfarebut also that of your workmates and the attitudes and the actionsof your workmates are essential to your safety. Take unsafepractices by others personally.

Be safety smart right from the start.

Take a look at the area you are working in to make sure it’s safe foryou and others. ProChoice has an increasing range of barrierproducts to ensure the work place is safe for workers and thegeneral public. Tapes, bollards, barriers and warning signs canhelp keep people away from workplace hazards.

Read the signs. Heed the signs.

Work places display safety signs advising of hazards, where towear specific PPE and when to observe certain precautions. Theseare important, so take notice and comply with the messages.

The secret to safety is prevention.

We all know this simple rule but sometimes we think we knowbetter.

Work conditions vary, and your work practices and equipmentshould be chosen accordingly.

Dress appropriately for work and weather conditions, whether itbe hot, cold, dusty, noisy, wet or windy environments. Think aboutthe environment and adapt your PPE in line with your specificworkplace OH & S regulations to ensure your safety at all times.

Remember, safety doesn’t happen by accident.
