Who are we?The Safeguarding in Pregnancy Team are a team of community midwives who have a special role with women and their partners who require additional support during their pregnancy.

We are employed by NHS Ayrshire and Arran as part of the midwifery service provided by the Ayrshire Maternity Unit.

The team work with clients across Ayrshire and are based in Ayrshire Central Hospital.

What do we do? We provide the care that any Community Midwife would provide during your pregnancy with additional home visits. We will help and support you with any questions or problems you may have.

We will link with any other service that you are getting help from.

We will link with the staff in the hospital when necessary.

Who Receives Care from us?We provide care for women/couples who need more support than others due to a range of health and social Issues.

These issues may be related to:

• Drug and alcohol misuse

• Mental health or learning disability

• Previous difficulties in bringing up children

• Being in care as a child or young person

• Being the victim of harm or abuse

• Being Homeless

• Any other factor impacting on the wellbeing of the unborn baby

Why are we different?We have the time to give you the level of care you may need.

We have close links with services such as social work, mental health and addiction services.

We have in-depth knowledge and skills and refer to appropriate supports when additional needs are identified.

What happens now?Your Safeguarding Midwife will contact you by phone and arrange to meet with you. This can be on your own or with your partner or someone else if you wish.

She will explain how she will work with you and undertake an assessment with you to see what help you may need.
