Welcome to Sadler’s WellsThis Summer / Autumn season offers a mix of what we do best at Sadler’s Wells - presenting outstandingdance from around the world together with our own productions and those of our Associate Artists.

One special evening that we have put together is the second in our Composer Series which features themusic of Thomas Adès. Four highly sought-after choreographers – Wayne McGregor, Crystal Pite, Karole Armitage and Alexander Whitley – will use his scores to create a mixed bill of epic proportions. I am very pleased to reveal that Thomas Adès will be conducting as well as performing in the evening.

Occasionally we are able to present a season of work from a particular country or region and this autumn ourNorthern Light season features outstanding dance from the Nordic nations that is rarely performed in thiscountry. As well as featuring one of the giants of dance, Mats Ek, with a major new production, Juliet &Romeo, this season will be a chance for you to discover new choreographers from the region and take advantage of our save 20% Multibuy offer to experience the work of new young talent.

I am also particularly excited about what I’m sure will be one of the most explosive meetings of two great performing artists, Akram Khan and Israel Galván. Separately they have astonished Sadler’s Wells audienceswith their artistry and virtuosity so the thought of them coming together is thrilling.

I’m delighted that our audiences will have two opportunities to see Sylvie Guillem this season when she performs with Russell Maliphant in PUSH at the Coliseum and with Akram Khan in Sacred Monsters here atSadler’s Wells.

We are also bringing back Jasmin Vardimon’s extraordinary and original PARK and a real Christmas treat withthe first major revival of Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands. Meanwhile, New Wave Associates TAODance Theatre take to the main stage for the first time, and the BalletBoyz present their new show YoungMen.

From November, our friend The Snowman makes his annual visit, rounding off a lively season in the PeacockTheatre, which also features visits from The 7 Fingers and Ballet Revolución.

It’s another packed season of the very best of dance and I hope to see you in one of our theatres soon.

The world’s fourth oldest ballet company, Royal Swedish Balletperform in London for the first time since 1995. To celebrate their240th anniversary, Johannes Öhman, the director of the RoyalSwedish Ballet commissioned renowned choreographer Mats Ek tocreate a full length adaptation of a timeless love story for 32 of thecompany’s dancers. Having created many new interpretations of classics, Ek’s Juliet & Romeo attracted much acclaim both in its native Sweden and internationally. Making its UK premiere this autumn, Ek brings a quirky twist to this much-loved ballet.

Juliet & Romeo is set to a score by Tchaikovsky – rather than the moretraditional Prokofiev – adapted and arranged by Anders Högstedt. This new production features scenography and costumedesign by Magdalena Åberg. The Renaissance-inspired costumes aregiven a modern twist, while the dark, urban setting helps bring thisclassic love story into the 21st century. Pairing a contemporary aesthetic with dynamic choreography and Linus Fellbom’satmospheric light design, Ek places this romantic tale in a brutal environment strewn with conflict between characters and generations.

Mette Ingvartsen has been forging a distinctive path in the last tenyears, creating work concerned with questions of kinaesthesia andperception. Having collaborated with French choreographers XavierLe Roy and Boris Charmatz, she is part of a generation of dance artiststhat considers choreography as a tool to think about the world and ourrelationship to it. For her first London performances, she brings herlatest creation to an intimate space in a new partnership with the Platform Theatre at Central Saint Martins.

The Artificial Nature Project is the latest in a series of four works staging perceptions and sensations of nature, asking the question:What is the relationship between the animate and inanimate world? The outcome is a performance that literally throws things around. Materials fly through the air, giving rise to a landscape that constantlytransforms itself. Throughout the performance the view is persistentlychanging: a calm contemplative site gives way to an energetic chaosof debris projected into space. The emerging choreography is partlyperformed by humans and partly by materials and objects, as oneimage is replaced by another, rapidly altering our perception of a glittering landscape.

Brazil’s internationally acclaimed dance company returns to Sadler’sWells for its first performances since 2011. With a history stretchingback nearly 40 years, Grupo Corpo’s 22 virtuosic dancers combinethe precision of classical ballet with the sensuality and passion of Latindance rhythms. Grupo Corpo translates as Group Body, reflecting themovement style of the dancers, who co-ordinate to fill the stage withunmatched energy and excitement.

The company performs two pieces, choreographed by artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras. The first piece is entitled Triz - theBrazilian term for the moment just before a catastrophe. The abstractdance is performed in striking black and white costume, and seesperformers’ bodies vertically split like inanimate objects. Performed forthe first time in the UK, Triz is a visually stunning dance experience.

The second of these, Parabelo, was described by Pederneiras as hismost Brazilian creation and is inspired by life in rural Brazil. It sees thedancers sweep across the stage moving rhythmically from group tosolo and back again. There are moments of utter peace and stillnessand others of raucous Brazilian carnival.

Showing her work for the first time in London, Guðjónsdóttir bringsan investigative piece that questions what it means to be engaged inthe act of watching. Best known for her performances with international choreographers such as Jan Fabre and Gisele Vienne, this year she has been commissioned by Cullberg Ballet to create anew version of her solo performance Soft Target.

In Variations on Closer, the audience comes face to face with threecharismatic female performers. They explore different levels of physical closeness between themselves as individuals and their observers. Audience and performers alike are offered a chance to reassess what it feels like to be observed, breaking traditional theatrical conventions. Confronted with the effect of the gaze, we areinvited to enter an unsettling moment of empathy, attraction, intimacyand alienation.

The performance is accompanied by an enigmatic soundtrack by a pioneer of experimental electronic music, Peter Rehberg (known asPITA), the owner and artistic director of the record label MEGO. Hirvanen’s is one of the rising names of the contemporary performance scene in the Nordic region. She intently questions howwe live our lives with visually arresting pieces for the stage and bespoke locations. Her work brings together minimalism with complexemotional experiences.

For those who have time is a dedication to theatre audiences. The titlepoints to the tone of the work: direct yet open, questioning yet playful. Hirvanen uses humour, purposeful discomfort and direct address in the hands of three striking performers who ask: what haveyou got time for?

At the core of the piece is an invitation to take a closer look at thehabits formed by the fast pace of contemporary life, which ironicallyboth unite and isolate us. This concern is echoed in the trilogy Operation We, of which this is the second part. Here imperfection, anxiety and beauty emerge through shaking, sweat and singing. Thisperformance makes you hear the ticking of time.

One of the UK’s best loved companies, Birmingham Royal Ballet returns with a family favourite from David Bintley and a triple bill featuring three short works on the theme of war.

In Beauty and the Beast, a cruel Prince, cursed to spend his life livingin a castle finds salvation in the heart of a beautiful girl. The girl, ahideous beast, a golden ballroom full of animals, two haughty sistersand a grumpy grandmother dance through the unfolding pages ofPhilip Prowse's stunning storybook set. To a score by Glenn Buhr, rich choreography brings to life magical transformations, wild waltzes, and a relationship that is at first terrifying, but ultimately beautiful.

Shadows of War opens with Kenneth MacMillan’s La Fin du Jour, capturing the glamorous lifestyle of the 1930s wealthy, using MauriceRavel’s score to create an elegy to a lifestyle lost to World War II. Miracle in the Gorbals has been specially re-created for the Companyby Dame Gillian Lynne, from Robert Helpmann’s original work set in1940s Glasgow and danced to music by Sir Arthur Bliss. The programme closes with David Bintley’s Flowers of the Forest; withmusic by Malcolm Arnold and Benjamin Britten, it contrasts picture-postcard Scotland with its own bloody history.

TAO Dance Theatre performs a brand new double bill as part of DanceUmbrella, returning to Sadler’s Wells following sell out shows in theLilian Baylis Studio.

Formed in 2008 by Beijing-based choreographer Tao Ye, TAO DanceTheatre is known for its collaborations across art forms including filmand visual art, creating dances that have a mesmeric, trance-like quality. In 6 & 7, he continues his numbered series of experimentationsthat explore the potential of the human body as a purely visual form, freed from the constraints of story-telling or representation.

In 6, his six dancers move in dynamic and hypnotising unison, in ashifting landscape of light created by Swedish lighting designer EllenRuge. His latest work 7 continues Tao Ye’s fascination with pattern, precision and ritual, and is distinguished by a sound track of acousticeffects generated by the seven dancers’ own bodies. Both 6 & 7 willbe accompanied by specially commissioned music from Chinese indiefolk composer Xiao He.

Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected danceartists today. In just over a decade he has created an imaginative, highly accessible and relevant body of work including productionssuch as DESH, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees. The multi-award-winning Israel Galván has been at the forefront of contemporary flamenco for 20 years. Galván is known for his innovative choreography and exquisite dancing technique.

With this new artistic exchange, Khan and Galván have createdTOROBAKA, bringing together kathak and flamenco to create something altogether distinct, defying classification or genre.

Performed for the first time in the UK, TOROBAKA takes its name froma Maori-inspired phonetic poem by Tristan Tzara. The bull (toro) andthe cow (vaca) are sacred animals in the dancers’ two traditions andrepresent the coming together of dance styles. Rather than mimicking one another, the two dancers seek to create somethingnew by better understanding each other’s approaches to their craft.

Wild Card returns with more specially curated evenings from a newgeneration of dance makers, bringing fresh perspectives to the stage. For each Wild Card, an up-and-coming artist is given the opportunityto present work that excites them alongside their own.

Neil Callaghan makes work between dance and theatre. Since 2002he has been creating performances both as a solo artist and in collaborations, including the Sadler’s Wells commission Electric Hotelby David Rosenberg and Frauke Requardt. His programme featurestwo international artists at the cutting edge of dance – Mette Ingvartsen and Jeremy Wade – who rarely show work in the UK. Healso performs an extract of his latest duet with long-time collaborator Simone Kenyon. These three pieces explore how we engage with theworld and each other.

In a theatre stripped of seating, this intimate triple bill aims to draw attention to the different ways in which an audience member is an active participant in co-creating a dance. This is an invitation to takepart in an evening of shared experiences and multiple transformations.

Sadler's Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon is a leading force inBritish dance theatre. Enjoying sell-out performances across the UKand internationally, her company’s works include Freedom, Justitia,7734 and Yesterday. She returns this autumn with a new version ofher hit show PARK, the first of Vardimon’s large scale stage works.

PARK is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eightcharacters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playgroundof relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic fountain, a graffiti artistsprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a baglady, and a flag-waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine creating a modern day fairytale that is alternatelysharp, funny and cruel.

Contrasting pieces set to an eclectic soundtrack that includes FrankieGoes to Hollywood, Brian Eno and Fiona Apple, PARK has been reworked for 2014 with new 3D imaging, presenting a breathtakingcollision of highly acute physical theatre, text, athletic dance and funkymusic, delivering fresh statements about our time.

What does it mean to be seen? What part does the gaze play in ourconstruction of the world around us? This powerful, physical duet revolves around a pair of lovers, who set aside performative elementsand ornate scenery to unravel a relationship using pure physical expression. …it’s only a rehearsal takes inspiration from the Greekmyth of Artemis and Acteaon, in which the goddess Artemis wreaksrevenge on Acteaon after he sees her bathing naked. Artemis punishes the hunter by turning him into a deer, and Acteaon’s owndogs tear him to pieces.

Cullberg Ballet has performed across the world since its inception in1967 by the pioneering Swedish choreographer Birgit Cullberg. Thecompany collaborates with a variety of national and international choreographers and performing artists to present contemporarydance in a distinctly Swedish style. As part of the Northern Light season, the company makes its Sadler’s Wells debut with the UK premiere of Plateau Effect.

In this new work, Dutch/Swedish choreographer Jefta van Dintherseeks to challenge audiences with a layering of choreography, light, sound and set. In Plateau Effect, the dancers form a community thatis constantly on the move as they progress through a series of disorienting and intriguing large scale environments. The viewer’s attention moves between the dancers’ movements and the materials they interact with, as the choreographer encourages the audiences to embrace what they do not understand.

From underground depths to the outer-reaches of the cosmos, Rambert's new show takes you inside a series of unique worlds. Theyspring from the imaginations of three of British dance's most distinctive artists and are inhabited by the company's world-classdancers.

The discovery of the 'God Particle' inspires The Strange Charm ofMother Nature, the new work by Rambert's Artistic Director Mark Baldwin. The dancers fizz with the energy of the miniscule buildingblocks that created life, the universe and everything.

Subterrain is a sensuous, enigmatic voyage underground, created byformer Scottish Ballet Director Ashley Page – “a compelling piece, immaculately danced” (The Guardian). The programme is completedby a first work for Rambert by ground-breaking choreographerShobana Jeyasingh.

First performed in 2006, Sacred Monsters is the hugely acclaimed collaboration between Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Sylvie Guillemand Akram Khan. Together, the pair explore the dynamics and language of two great classical dance forms, kathak and ballet, to produce a “five-star display of speed, precision and power” (TheGuardian).

Used in France in the 19th century as a nickname for theatre’s biggeststars, Sacred Monsters is a term that marks the birth of contemporary stardom, in which the icons of the arts and sportsworlds are given divine status by their audience and the media. Thepressure of living up to these expectations leaves no room for failure,self-expression or emotion. The divine status becomes inhuman, monstrous.

This landmark piece features additional choreography by GauriSharma Tripathi and Lin Hwai-Min, Artistic Director of Cloud GateDance Theatre of Taiwan, and music created by Philip Sheppard.

Celebrated choreographer Arthur Pita brings his magical dance theatre show The Little Match Girl to Sadler's Wells this Christmas.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's classic story, this touching taleof a young street girl's hopes and dreams is beautifully told throughdance, song and original live music.

A snowy stage sets the scene for an icy cold Christmas eve, where thelittle match girl paces the emptying streets, trying to sell her matches.Cold, hungry and with just one final match flame to keep her warm, she sees a vision of her beloved grandmother. Leaving her troubled lifebehind, she is guided up into the night sky by her grandmother whotakes her to the moon. Now, on a clear night, if you look closely, youmight see the light of a shooting star, or is it a match burning brightly?

Arthur Pita returns to Sadler’s Wells following the huge success ofMischief, a family show created in collaboration with Theatre Rites, which also enjoyed a season on Broadway. His recent adaptation ofFranz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis at the Royal Opera House wonOlivier, South Bank Sky Arts and Critics Circle National Dance Awards.
