Sthala PurANam
TirukkuDandai (KumbakoNam)
This divya desam is in Tanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. It is about 2.5 kms from KumbakoNam railway station which is on the Chennai – Tanjavur main line.
At the end of one of the previous yugAs, foreseeing the praLaya (the great deluge) coming up, Lord Brahma placed the VedAs, the Divine Nectar and the seeds of creation in a mud pot called amrta kumbham (kuDam) and kept the amrta Kumbham safety on top of Mountain Meru. During the PraLaya kAlam the amrta kumbham was washed away by the flood. In due course moving in the south direction it came to halt at a particular place. Then at the wish of all devAs, Lord Siva pierced the pot with an arrow. Immediately amudam (Divine nectar) flowed from the pot and flowed in two parts, one into MahAmaga KuLam and another in to PoRRAmari Kulam. Since it was here that the Divine nectar flowed out of the amrta kumbham, this divya desam is called KuDamUkku, KumbakoNam or simply TirukkuDandai.
This divya desam is located between two rivers, Cauvery (on the North) and arasalARu (on the South).
On His Adi Sesha couch, in the sanctum sanctorum, Lord ArAvamudan is seen in uddhAna Sayana posture with His head slightly raised giving darsan to Tirumazhisai PirAn. Sri devi and BhU devi are nearby and Lord Brahma is seen rising from the Lord's naval. Hema Rshi, SaptapatIs, Cauvery and devAs are seen paying homage.
This is an ubhaya PradhAna kshetram where both the presiding deity (mUlavar) and processional deity (utsavar) are given equal importance.
There are two entrances to the shrine. The southern entrance, "The dakshiNAyana vAsal" is used during dakshiNAyana (about the middle of January to middle of July) and the northern entrance, "The uttarAyaNa vAsal" is used
13
sadagopan.org
during uttarAyaNam (about middle of July to middle of January). The two entrances have nine steps each which is symbolic of the nine steps to moksham. The sAnctum sanctorum of KomaLavalli tAyAr is near the uttarAyaNa steps. The dakshiNayana doorway is known as the doorway to marriage as Lord SarngapANi came out of this corridor after His marriage to KomaLavalli tAyAr.
Seven AzhvArs have sung about this PerumAL and this divya desam. Next to Srirangam and Tirumalai this divya desam has the most number of AzhvAr mangaLAsAsanams (51 pAsurams).
Because of Sri nAthamuni, this Kshetram has a special significance. It was here in this temple Sri nAthamuni, grandfather of Sri ALavandAr first heard the ten pAsurams of Sri NammAzhvAr in praise of amudan ("ArAvamudE") and he heralded the renaissance of all the four thousand pAsurams of AzhvArs at AzhvAr Tirunagari.
MahAmaham festival is celebrated every twelve years in this divya desam in the months of February - March when Jupiter passes through Leo. It is believed the deities of the nine sacred rivers meet in confluence on the MahAmaha day here in this divya desam.
Legend has it that once sUryA, the Sun God lost in a contest to sudarSanA. sUryA did a long severe penance in this kshetram and regained his original glory. Hence this kshetram is also called "BhAskara Kshetram".
This is one of the Panca Ranga Kshetrams.

He blessed Arjunan even in his childhood. How? Devendran's son is Arjunan and he had prayed to KaNNan to take care of his son and hence KaNNan took care of him from his childhood. Also Arjunan’s nara avatAram and nArAyaNa avatAram is KaNNan and hence since childhood, He took care of this nara-arjunan. Meaning/Comments by SrI. MK:
When the wealth of the Brahmins increases, they will show their joy by conducting Yaj~nAs for the well being of the Universe and its beings. When the wealth of the shepherds increases, then they celebrate that blessing with "pot-dance (kuDak kUttu)". They place earthen pots on their head, hands and shoulders and dance with skillful steps without dropping the pots. This is a celebratory event.
Oh Lord, who made the cowherd colony be blessed with undiminishing wealth through Your association with them! You placed a row of pots on Your head, held one pot in each of Your hands and threw them up in the air and caught them while engaged in sporting intricate steps. Who can match Your dance that surpassed all the rules of Bharata nATyam?

Meaning/Comments by SrI. V. Sadagopan:
In this pASuram, ANDAL does mangaLASasanam to ArAvamudan, who is lying on AdiSeshan on the banks of Hema pushkariNI in TirukkuDandai.
Once this emperumAn was lying on a tender banyan leaf, tasting His own toe and doing mAyA jAlam as if He is ignorant of everything else that is going on around Him. I am caught in the net of this paraman and there is no way for me to escape. Do not use words as you please that painfully pierce my body like spears. That kaNNapirAn who played the role of a cowherd boy and played the kuDak-kUttu when He was in AyarpADi, is reclining in TirukkuDandai on the AdiSeshan. Go there and have the darSanam of ArAvamudan/hemarangan and then tell Him this. "Oh kaNNA, who performed the kuDak-kUttu! We have come all the way from srIvilliputtUr in the interests of kOdai’s welfare; she has become unconscious because of unsurpassable love for You; she wants us to get from You the beautiful, green, cool, tuLasI garland that You are wearing, and

AzhvAr did not mention ten heads; He mentions aintoDu aindu - five plus five. One can say five heads on the left and five heads on the right. Periya vAcchAn PiLLai infers beautifully that these are personification of five karmendriyAs and five j~nAnendriyAs based on AdhyAtmika interpretations.

VaidIkAs enjoy amudan and get their strength in their anushThAnam and j~nAnam. They get benefited every manner by their paying obeisance to amudan. Or one can also say that their anukUla vrtti (their fruits) are taken care by the Lord and He accepts as their offering (as they are paramikAntins).
mAl um allaiyE - um means You are RanganAthan as well as amudan.

Meaning/Comments by SrI. MK:
He is the Lotus eyed One - Lord of TirukkuDandai divya desam where Cool River flows (wherein good fragrant long haired women take sacred bath). He is the Lord (those days) who aimed divine cakrA to cut and destroy the one whose mind desired (lustily for) the breast of the most divine Periya PirAtti, wearing bangles in her resplendent hands.
Some scholars say that this pAsuram (first two lines) refer to RamavatAram. rAvaNaN’s ten heads strength was mentioned in last verse. In this verse his most cruelest asahyApacAram (act of terrible grave blunder) of desiring for PirAtti is mentioned. Angered on his daring thought and act, the Lord had sent the cakrA (Azhi) to kill the rAkshasa. AzhvAr says eRinda AzhiyAn. Where does cakrA come in RaamAyaNa? One may wonder. All weapons as cakrAsamsa can be a justification. Or it can mean also the arrow sent by Rama (who is AzhiyAn- CakrattAn- the one who holds CakrA- i.e. mahA VishNu). Or since Rama avatAram has already been touched upon in the previous verse, here it

may mean KrshNAvatAram. SiSupAlan longed desirously for RukmiNIi PirAtti and he was killed by the Lord aiming cakrA on his head when he (SiSupAla) continued to tell names on KrshNA.
"SrI kRshNa!"
The most fragrant long haired women take sacred bath in the river without even bothering about their hair getting spoiled by the bathing. They are so devoted to TirukkuDandai mAl. Also scholars say: maDantai means - ladies at Paramapadam- they come down to TirukkuDandai for paying their obeisance to perumAL.
After enjoying KuDandai SaarngapANi as Rama, AzhvAr now enjoys Him as KaNNan in this verse.

The most valorous Lord who sent the heads of KAlanEmi asuran (in tArakAsura yuddham), dandavakran (vakkaran), Muran (associate of NarakAsura) et al roll and them straight to Yamaloka.
Usually AzhvAr enjoys the vibhavam in first two lines and the second two lines on divya desam. In this verse, it is the other way. AzhvAr perhaps is more attracted to TirukkuDandai.

AzhvAr now enjoys and praises His reclining TirukkuDandai beauty.
Well grown stout tall bamboo trees covered by heavy dews and fog settling on top of it, bends down at night (due to the weight) and when the sun rises the dews dries up and the bamboo rises to its height again fully touching the skies of TiruvEngaDam - where He stands majestically. He is the one at TirukkuDandai in reclining position where bees completely cover the beautiful flowers drinking honey from there residing therein; where fertile dense gardens and large cool ponds are enjoyed in great numbers.
The Lord of TiruvEngaDam - blessing devAas and humans there is the same Kovalan (king) one reclining at TirukkuDandai. The bamboos due to the anugraham of TiruvEngaDamuDaiyAn and the earth’s strength, grow very tall on top of the mountain almost touching the skies as if they are inviting the devAs to TiruvEngaDam. Meaning/Comments by SrI. MK:
The one who has performed grand deeds in other avatArams is all this Lord of TirukkuDandai who is reclining. Oh Lord! The One who has most beautiful black curly long tresses! (kEsanE!).
On the banks of the river Cauveri - which flows crossing the large mountain hurdles, forest and deserted areas on the way, breaking down as large number of canals and flow continuously - You have chosen to recline in TirukkuDandai in such a grand beautiful and divine posture. Is it due to the exertion of your tender soft red lotus feet taking a walk from Ayodhya up to MithilA (before marriage) and AyodhyA to lankA later? Have they pained for you to take rest? Or is the whole TirumEni (divine body- diyva mangaLa vigraham) endured during Your VarAha avatAram killing HiraNyAkshan and brining back BhUmi PirAtti (Universe) back from troubled waters? Please bless me with an answer as to why You have reclined and may Your such divine Yoga nidrA (reclining) long live for aeons! (vAzhi).

naDanta kAlkaL- the legs that walked - may also refer to Trivikrama avatAram - scholars say. Where He has walked, this may be referring to that avatAram.
Not just the lotus feet that exerted; It is the whole TirumEni that exerted in Huge Boar avatAram; The thorns and stones hurt the feet while walking; It is the whole Universe - with all its mountains, oceans, rivers and forests- how much pain that would have caused on His saukumArya TirumEni (tender Divine Body)!
ezhuntiruntu pEsu - Get up and speak- If You attempt to speak while lying down, I may feel more concerned and worse that Your pain is so much that You are not able to even get up. Hence please dispel my worries and get up to speak to me. If you do that, at least I will feel that the pain has subsided and I feel good.
ArAamudan just like Sri RanganAthan was reclining fully at TirukkuDandai and when AzhvAr had prayed for getting up to speak, He broke His arcA samAdhi and started to rise. AzhvAr being overwhelmed by His dayA, mercy and saulabhyam heeding to his own request, enjoyed the Divine Beauty of His ThirumEni sings mangaLaaSaasanam long live your reclining posture (vAzhi). Hence even today, Amudan blesses us with the reclining posture with a slightly raised position as if He is getting up (uddhAna Sayanam) - as mentioned by scholars.
Sri UttamUr Swamy adds: OR it may also be possible that Amudan was reclining in the slightly raised posture even before. When AzhvAr requests Him to get up to talk to him, Amudan heeding to Asritars’ (greatest devotees’) plea, attempts to get up. AzhvAr feeling overwhelmed with His saulabhyam, requests Him not to get up and says, vAzhi, singing mangaLaaSaasanam for His uddhAna Sayanam.
Or ezhuntiruntu kiDantavARu- Having seen the Lord reclined as if he is getting up, AzhvAr asks as to why are You not getting up? Because of the exertion, I am not able to get up any further - the Lord responds, and hence AzhvAr sings
33
sadagopan.org
vAzhi - may You live long for aeons to come in this position! It can be another anubhavam, says Sri UttamUr Swamy.
The Lord breaks his arcA samAdi and speaks to AzhvArs at all divya desams and hence this is not uncommon. Here probably He did not speak immediately and hence AzhvAr asks as to why You do not talk? Is it because Your legs pain, Your body aches etc?

In this verse, he thinks of the Lord of TirukkuDandai and laments over the days of yore lost in chasing worldly pleasures instead of spending his time reflecting on the supreme principle resting on the bed of AdiSesha on the banks of holy river Cauveri. He experiences the mood of nirvedam here.

Meaning/Comments by Sri V. Sadagopan:
Here, Pey AzhvAr pays tribute to the saulabhyam and SausIlyam, two of the Lord's ananta KalyaNa GunAs. The AzhvAr reveals that the Lord of infinite accessibility to the lowliest and the highest (Saulabhyam) and limitless virtuous qualities (SausIlyam ) is resident in the arcA form at TiruviNNagar, TiruVehkA, TiruvEngaDam known for its beautiful waterfalls and springs, TiruveLukkai famous for its tall spires, beautiful TirukkuDandai, Srirangam with its honey-laden flowers abundant in the groves and TirukkOtttiyur. The key words in this pAsuram are "tan kuDankai nIr ERRAn tAzhvu". The Lord is the owner of everything because of His Paratvam. In spite of it, He begged for three steps of land from MahA Bali and received the dAnam of water on His hands to seal the transaction. Such is His SausIlyam and Saulabhyam says the AzhvAr here.

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
Oh my Lord of Purest Form and Nature! My Master! I am Your possession. To ward off the fears of Your bhaktAs, You take many forms, pure and serene, there is an infinite variety therein. For, You may take any form, even very large forms at that by mere will or Sankalpa, unlike me, who take births by the influence of karma.
And all these forms add luster to You. What to speak of the arcA form You have taken in TirukkuDandai. The place abounds in ponds that are full of lotus flowers, on which bees play and sing. The Lord reclines, however, with the lotus-eyes not open. He sleeps, may I say? I look at the sight and stand stunned. What shall I do? He should open His eyes and bestow the gracious vision on me.

Oh Lord, reclining at TirukkuDandai! I am not in a fit position to resort to any procedural technique – as sAdhanA or upAyA – to reach You. At this stage, what can I do? Who can serve me as a help? Why do You subject me to impossible acts or rituals? Because, I do not, let me make it very clear to You, my dear Lord, need any technique or any person except You to reach You. This is because I cannot ever think of any other help from any body except You, even if it be for the laudable purpose of reaching You. Make no mistake about it, please. If an effort is to be made to ‘measure’ or ‘comprehend’ the greatness and reputation that You possess, it will look to be only as far as the observer can see. Indeed, there is no limit to it. All worlds are Yours – all they are subservient to You. See what happened to me because I saw You here. Had I not seen You, I would have been at peace, hoping to reach my goal at distant time from hence. Now I am feeling restless. I turn around on sides hoping to see You appear in physical form. Meaning by Dr. VNV:
My Lotus-eyed Lord, Who has reclined at TirukkuDandai! In my love and longing, I weep, kneel, dance and sing. But not seeing you in physical form, I will hang my head down, cursing my fate; my sins that have brought about this situation are to be blamed. I pay obeisance to You. And humbly plead with You: "Please see to it that I unite with Your feet. But do not impose on me any ritual or method – called sAdhanA – fore this end".

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
Devise a method. Cut off my karma-bonds. Pull me out of the five pits of sense-pleasures and close the pits. I must then revel only in the music, nectar, mental process, etc., that You Yourself constitute. Oh Lord of nityasUri-s, reclining in TirukkuDandai, where knowledgeable VaishNavaites abound, who regard Your kainkarya not only as divine bliss but also the only sustaining force for living! See that I should never more say, "How long am I to be away?

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
My valiant Lion! Beautiful golden Effulgence! Beautifully red-eyed bounteous showerer of benefits! You are fire to foes; cool like the maragata gem-hill; Your four arms extend hope and courage to us. You have enslaved me by our benign grace. I have no merit to deserve this, I know. I feel that You have come to TirukkuDandai, along with MahAlakshmi, for this purpose, i.e., to make this relationship consummate. Yes, in that case, grant Your Feet. Then, cut asunder my birth.

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
Oh Lord of TirukkuDandai! Wielding the powerful cakra! Great wizard! Whether You remove my worries or not, I do not have anything to say. Only I should mention that I have no other helper, now I feel my body yields gradually. A day will soon come when my life will be out. I am afraid that a weakness may attach itself to me at that moment. My only request is that with the present steadfastness, my clinging to Your Feet remain fast even then.

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
What an unrelenting man I was! Sensually disposed; haughty enough to be an incorrigible soul-thief; You caught hold of me, taught me elements of Atma j~nAna, corrected me with the result I became a loving servant, relishing the art of service. I stand at and below Your feet, very steadfast. Oh Lord of nityasUri-s! Oh Prime Creator of all worlds! This itself proves that You are the overlord over all devAs. You chose to come and recline in TirukkuDandai where gems of purest ray serene converge from all directions. This pose and this situation have a unique virtue. All the worlds come and worship the Lord (AravAmudan – a nectar that can never produce satiety), without any doubt regarding His proclaimed (sic) inaccessibility and paratvam; also without any doubt regarding the possibility of His visual perception; what is more, the nityasUri-s come here to enjoy the simplicity (SauSilyam); contrary to popular assumption, He is not simply immobile. Once He rose a little, now He frequently turns on either side, presumably to bestow His grace on both east and west.

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
When I requested You to come and walk along, You are not coming. But You do come, I know, though not in physical form. My heart rejoices, which is the proof for Your coming invisibly. My soul enjoys the sweet nectar, that can never give me a satiety. My past acts and their fruits will haunt me till they are spent up by actual exhaustion by experiencing. They would have acted against my enjoying you. But You had kindly wiped them out and I owe it to myself to be Your servant, by nature.
With this relationship now established, would You make me suffer, loiter for help, and complain about my misery? Oh Sir, if to do it, it would be a stigma to You.

Meaning by Dr. VNV:
Of the thousand verses sung by SaThakopan on the Lord who drank the life of the demoness along with the milk she offered, clinging to the Lord’s feet alone as the only hold, all sweeter than the music of the flute, this decad will secure, to whomsoever mastering it so as to wipe out their spiritual immaturity – a position of great enjoyability to the Lord and VaishNavaites.
