THEMES

Page 4: Sad I Ams (Themes & Moral Values)

Neglect, abandonment and rejection

• All objects whether animate or inanimate have feelings and should be treated with care, love and respect.• Today, people have become careless and

indifferent. They thoughtlessly throw away old and unwanted things and neglect people.• Inanimate things have no voice but they want

to be useful and valued again. The old, infirm and disabled are voiceless but they have feelings too and want to be part of a living, thriving, vibrant society

The importance of recycling

• In our modern ‘thrown away’ society, it is all too easy to eliminate waste and old, unwanted, unused things.• However, some of these objects can be reused

or recycled.• Thus, ‘new’ or refashioned/recreated items can

be produced, sold and reused in a different form.• The poem encourages recycling which is

helpful to our modern world of waste and destruction.

MORAL VALUES

Love, compassion and kindness

• We must be kind and compassionate to others whether they are animate or inanimate.• Everyone and everything around us has

some use. They have served us according to their nature and make.• Hence, we must treat the person or thing

with love, compassion and kindness when it is old, hurt or less attractive and useful.

Page 9: Sad I Ams (Themes & Moral Values)

Respect•We must respect and recognise the past service (and sacrifice) of the things we own and used.• It is not right to carelessly abandon or neglect them when they have outlived their utility or lost their beauty.

Responsibility• In an age of environment destruction, it is imperatives that we be responsible for preserving what is left of Mother Nature.•We must be vigilant and accountable for how we treat our household waste and items or people who are in need

Page 11: Sad I Ams (Themes & Moral Values)

Public Spirit•We must take an active interest in important social issues like the need to preserve our air, land and water, including our senior citizens. If we come forward and raise awareness, others will be influenced to act positively as well.

Be more sensitive to the feelings of others• Animals, like human beings, must not be

thoughtlessly discarded. They, like inanimate objects, must be treated with dignity and respect even if they have outlived their usefulness to society.

Be more vigilant and creative about recycling goods• To save the environment, it is necessary to

devise new ways to reprocess and reuse goods which have been neglected or abandoned.

Desolation and sadness

TONE&MOOD

Loneliness

Nostalgic and regretful

• This is in keeping with the theme of neglect, abandonment and rejection.

• When an object or person is discarded and left alone, feelings of loneliness prevail. This mood of loneliness is prevalent in the poem.

• Abandonment and neglect give rise to feelings of nostalgia and regret. There is a longing for the past when youth, vigour and vibrancy were the order of the day.
