FROM THE DESK OF FATHER JEFF: It is with sincere regret that I have accepted the resignation of Peg Jordan, our Liturgy Coordinator. Peg has served our parish faithfully for 11 years as Liturgy Coordinator. She has kept up on all the liturgical trends in the Church and has helped with rehearsals and training. The new Liturgy Coordinator will be Jack Hanlon. Jack has worked with Peg over the years and will do a fine job. I thank him for accepting the position. I would like to thank Fred Weinfurt and his 2011 raffle team; Charlie & Jeane Mottern, Ann & John Cuccia, Joe Cleary, MD, Wilbur Garro, Sophie Oldakowski, and Sister Barbara McKenna, RSM. I would like to thank the anonymous donor who picked up the tab for paving the parking lot, over $23,000.

REMINDER: August is upon us and books and teachers have to be in place for Religious Education classes. We still do not have the registration forms for all children in the program. Please stop into the office as soon as possible to register your

child/children for the 2011 –2012 classes. Thank you.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097. Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.sacredheartsofjesusandmary.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. FEAST OF FAITH Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus:

Song of Heaven

The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the

scriptures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the

prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in majesty: “Seraphim

were stationed above; each of them had six wings:

with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled

their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. ‘Holy,

holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!’ they cried one to the

other. ‘All the earth is filled with his glory!’ ” (Isaiah

6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus’

entry into Jerusalem: “Hosanna to the Son of David;

blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;

hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). Yet the

liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The

seraphim sang, “the earth is filled with his glory.” But

the liturgy proclaims, “heaven and earth are full of

your glory.” In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet.

For a moment in time, we join in the song that the

angels sing for all time. The Sanctus raises us to

heaven, but does not remove us from the earth. It is

the song of the King who took on our human flesh so

that we might share in his divine life. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS

The school community of OLH is actively seeking

additional donors and sponsors for the Wellness

Center—Classroom extension. This project will provide

four additional classrooms as well as a full gymnasium

with suspended running track at the school. The first

stages of the project have been funded totally by

foundation grants, family and local fund-raising efforts.

The completion of the building, expected in late spring

2012, will depend upon the ability of the school to raise

an additional $700,000 over the coming months. There

are several memorial opportunities available in this

gymnasium-classroom extension. There are brochures

available at the doors of the Church. Anyone wishing to

make a donation toward this effort is asked to contact the

school at 283-9140.

Registration for the 2011-2012 school year for

kindergarten thru grade 8 is now completed, with waiting

lists in every grade. There IS room available in the pre-

school program at St. Rosalie’s campus in Hampton

Bays. A fully licensed program for three and four year

olds is operated in a modern building. Students who

attend OLH pre-school are given priority of enrollment

when it comes time for kindergarten. Please call 283-

9140 for information.

PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS

Why a New Translation?

On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27,

2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin

praying the texts of the Mass using a new English

translation of The Roman Missal. Many people have

wondered why the Church is implementing a new

translation of the prayers of the Mass. The Mass is the

very core of Catholic life; its prayers express our Catholic

beliefs. The more clearly we can express those beliefs, the

more our faith can grow and be nourished. When the Mass

was first translated into English some forty years ago, it

was understood that the translation would have to be

assessed and revised from time to time. Since then, a

number of Church leaders, most prominently the late

Blessed Pope John Paul II, have expressed the opinion that

the 1960s translations of the Latin were done in haste.

After the Second Vatican Council, when the Church

throughout the world began praying the Mass in the

languages of the people rather than in Latin, translations

from the Latin were in immediate demand. In contrast, the

new translation that we will now be using has taken nearly

a decade to produce and, as Pope John Paul II desired, it is

closer to the original Latin. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church

______________________ August 7, 2011 Today we remember Saint Victricius (vik-TREE-she-us) who died in 407. He and his friend Martin of Tours were Roman soldiers. When they decided to become Christians, they put down their weapons and refused to remain in the army. They were beaten and treated as deserters. Victricius became a wandering preacher in what is now France, and then was elected bishop. He was known as a peacemaker. Later, he wrote of his life, “I inspired the wise with love of peace, I taught it to the teachable, I explained it to the ignorant, I imposed it on the obstinate, insisting on it in season and out of season.” Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10 Listen to the words of the prophet Zechariah. The Lord says this: Everyone in Jerusalem, celebrate and shout! Your king has won the victory, and he is coming to you. He is humble and rides on a donkey. He comes on the colt of a donkey. I, the Lord, will take away war chariots and horse from Israel and Jerusalem. Bows that were made for battle will be broken. I will bring peach to nations, and your king will rule from sea to sea. His kingdom will reach from the Euphrates River across the earth. The Word of the Lord. Reflection: Why is it so hard to think of kings who do not use war or the threat of war? Do I prefer leaders who are fierce in the schoolyard or neighborhood? Is peacefulness the same as weakness? Why is peacemaking so difficult, when all people want to be at peace? Prayer: The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice; Let many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness surround the Lord; The Lord’s lightnings light up the world; The earth sees and trembles. The heavens proclaim God’s justice and all the peoples behold God’s glory. Rejoice in the Lord, O you faithful and give thanks to God’s holy name!

August 7, 2011 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

______________________ August 12, 2010

Today we celebrate “Brother Sun.” He warms our planet and fills it with things necessary for life and growth. But during August, the sun may be a bit too generous. Hot sunny days can be scorchers, when gardeners long for cool rain. The sun is many things to us, but above all it is our giant lantern. Light has come to represent joy, knowledge, innocence, love and life itself. The sun is a powerful icon of God, whom we call “Light of Light” and “Light of the World.” We look forward to the end of the world, when, according to the Bible, God will be all the light we need. Reading 1 John 2:7,8-13,14

Listen to the words of the first letter to John My dear friends! You can see the darkness fading away and the true light already shining. If we claim to be in the light and hate someone, we are still in the dark. But if we love others, we are in the light, and we don’t cause problems for them. If we hate others, we are living and walking in the dark. We don’t know where we are going, because we can’t see in the dark. Children, I am writing you, because your sins have been forgiven in the name of Christ. Parents, I am writing you, because you have known the one who was there from the beginning. Young people, I am writing you, because you are strong. God’s message is firm in your hearts, and you have defeated the evil one. Reflection: What does John mean by “the true light [is] already shining”? How is having my sins forgiven like coming into the light?

On August 11 & 12, the earth’s orbit takes us through a cloud of rocks left by a comet. If we look in the sky before dawn, we can see falling stars called “Saint Lawrence’s tears” because they appear close to his feast day (August 10). It is also called the Perseid meteor shower.
