overview

Sacred Heart Schools (SHS) is defining excellence in education for the 21st century. From its founding by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1877 as the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart Schools has been creating enlightened scholars, compassionate leaders of high character, and responsible citizens who make a difference across Kentucky and around the world. With its global alumni reach and extraordinary impact, SHS continues its proud tradition of transforming lives.

Sacred Heart Schools strengthens and continues the educational ministry of the Ursuline Sisters who have served in Louisville since 1858. SHS is rooted in both the teaching mission of the Catholic Church and the tradition of the Ursuline Sisters, founded by St. Angela Merici. SHS is comprised of four separate schools—Sacred Heart Preschool, Sacred Heart Model School, Sacred Heart Academy, and Sacred Heart School of the Arts—all of which are committed to education that affirms the dignity of each individual and promotes community, reverence, service, and leadership.

Sacred Heart Schools is currently seeking an exceptional leader to serve as its new President. This is an extraordinary, high performing, and complex multi-school International Baccalaureate World School with four separate school heads reporting to the President. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate outstanding leadership and management skills as well as the ability to engage effectively across the community. This is a rare opportunity to lead a first-rate independent Catholic institution and to take this outstanding system of schools to the next level. Candidates should also be guided by the mission to inspire diverse learners to become globally-minded, compassionate leaders while embracing the Ursuline Core Values of Community, Reverence, Service, and Leadership. They will also honor SHS’s vision to be an internationally recognized system of Catholic schools that inspires students, empowers faculty, and models excellence and high achievement in all facets of the student experience.

Sacred Heart Preschool (SHP)Supported by the best practices in preschool education, SHP offers a holistic foundation for lifelong learning. As a fully-accredited Montessori program, and candidate for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), SHP’s fundamental approach is focused on IB’s dynamic cycle of inquiry, action, and reflection. The curriculum is student-centered and promotes each student’s social, emotional, academic, spiritual, and physical growth. Children are empowered to explore their curiosities with a strong emphasis on problem solving, critical thinking, cooperative group work, and social responsibility.

AcademicsThe Sacred Heart Preschool Toddler curriculum centers on principles of early childhood education, combining aspects of both the Montessori and IB teaching and learning approaches. Faculty and staff work together to foster the growth and education of each child in preparation for an easy transition to the full Preschool at age three.

Preschool classrooms are either age specific or mixed-age, with at least one certified Montessori teacher. Classrooms

incorporate Montessori methods and are arranged in learning centers with a variety of appropriate and dynamic hands-on materials. The curriculum includes exposure to math, language arts, science, history, geography, practical life, and sensory development. Students are exposed to religion through age-appropriate lessons and activities that relate to the Ursuline core values.

School LifeExperiential learning through the arts is a core aspect of an Ursuline education. At Sacred Heart Preschool, a Sacred Heart School of the Arts visual arts instructor often pairs literature with the students’ art projects. This exploration of knowledge across a range of disciplines is one of the tenets of the IB educational paradigm and helps SHP’s young learners connect to and understand the greater world. Collaboration and understanding of their own and other cultures are important aspects of the PYP and help students learn how to be respectful and open-minded.

Sacred Heart Model School (SHMS)SHMS is vibrant school community with an outstanding academic tradition, built and nurtured in the spirit of St. Angela Merici. SHMS was originally named for its innovative approach as a model teaching environment utilized by students at Ursuline College. This tradition of trailblazing, dating back to 1924, has continued in the decades since, perhaps most notably when SHMS became the first IB Middle Years Programme in the state of Kentucky. SHMS continues to earn its reputation for academic excellence, while serving the spiritual, developmental, emotional, and social needs of all of its students.

AcademicsAs an IB World School, Sacred Heart Model School strives to develop internationally minded citizens and educate the whole person. The School does this through a comprehensive approach that empowers students to become world-ready leaders by developing a principled, caring, and

knowledgeable response to the world around them. SHMS teachers are collaborative and creative and participate in extensive professional development with other educators across the world.

Classrooms are active, student-centered, inquiry-based environments where students are challenged to take academic risks and to develop their research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Sacred Heart Model School adheres to the highest standards in education across the globe and, as a result of this, is recognized internationally. For many years, Sacred Heart Model School has offered both Spanish and French and is very excited to add the study of Chinese to the world language program. (Kindergarten students will be introduced to all three languages and will pursue their choice of the three throughout their time at SHMS.)

School LifeNo two SHMS classrooms are the same, but they all naturally support the four areas of 21st century learning: collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. These flexible, dynamic classrooms of the future have everything from mini-trampolines, balance balls, standing desks, and stationary bicycle pedals to innovative collaboration spaces and comfortable reading nooks. Interactive touch-screen panels, a 1:1 iPad program, and Chromebooks for students in Levels 3-5 ensure SHMS takes advantage of the synergies between learning and technology.

In partnership with Sacred Heart School for the Arts, the Arts Exploration Program enables Model School students to take a range of performing arts classes that are connected to the units of inquiry studied in the classroom. Classes include violin, keyboard, choir, percussion, handbells, drama, and band. SHMS inspires leadership in every student. By emphasizing the IB leaner profile attributes, classrooms become safe environments where students can take risks, develop a growth mindset, and build confidence. Through the yearly stewardship program, students learn empathy and compassionate leadership.

Sacred Heart Academy (SHA)As an IB World School, SHA provides a global education for young women throughout their high school years. SHA prides itself on offering an academic experience that is concept-based and promotes inquiry and experimentation rather than simply teaching content and then testing on it. As a result of this, SHA students are deeply engaged in their learning and can make connections to the world beyond their school campus. The IB program facilitates collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, and taking risks, which prepares students for college and for life. With four-year concentrations in arts and computer programming, a robust vocal and theater program, nationally-ranked athletic teams, formalized leadership certificate program, and a pervasive focus and dedication to the Ursuline core values of Community, Reverence, Service, and Leadership, SHA is always educating and empowering the whole student. AcademicsSHA classrooms are active, student-centered, inquiry-based environments. SHA’s college-preparatory program aims to develop internationally minded citizens and educate the whole person through a comprehensive approach that empowers students to become world-ready leaders by developing a principled, caring, and knowledgeable response to the world around them.

SHA students have the option to choose from 36 college-level courses including IB, AP, and dual-credit courses. In fact, 70% of juniors and seniors are enrolled in college-credit courses. Sacred Heart Academy operates on a four-block schedule each day, which offers students the opportunity to develop their planning and academic preparation skills. This style of schedule also means that students have ample opportunity to seek additional help from teachers, study with peers, collaborate on group projects, visit the counselor or the academic dean, or simply take more time for independent quiet study.

SHA offers a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses with a concentration in computer science. The four-year sequenced computer science program engages students in computational thinking through activity, project, problem-based learning, and will get them excited about the possibilities in careers that use computing.

School LifeSHA takes great pride in its mascot: the Valkyrie. A Valkyrie is a Norse mythological woman who carried the bodies of brave deceased warriors to Valhalla (heaven); at SHA, the Valkyrie represents the school’s goal to build and graduate strong women of great faith and has many traditions that reflect this goal. For example, during the Freshman Mass, seniors present each freshman with a single red rose to symbolize the beginning of their journey as a Valkyrie. Upon graduation, graduates carry a bouquet of red roses to symbolize all that they have gained during their time at SHA. At the end of the ceremony, instead of throwing their caps, graduates tear off roses petals and throw them into the air to celebrate.

Another beautiful tradition that embraces the spirit of the Valkyrie is the Ring Ceremony. SHA students receive their class rings in March or April of their junior year. At the ring ceremony, each junior is presented her ring by a special female role model in her life. The ceremony focuses on their responsibility to serve as the senior leaders in the coming year.

In conjunction with these and other meaningful traditions, the Counseling Program ensures students make the most of their time at SHA and that they cultivate the skills that will set them up for future success. The structure of the SHA counseling department is unique in that students stay with the same school counselor for all four years but also work with a college counselor during their junior and senior years. This allows the counselors more time with the students and aids them in getting to know the personality, strength, and individuality of each girl.

Sacred Heart School for the Arts (SHSA)Sacred Heart School for the Arts is proud to be celebrating its fiftieth year of providing excellence in arts education to the Louisville community. Founded by the Ursuline Sisters, SHSA nurtures creativity and encourages self-expression through opportunities in dance, drama, music, and visual art. All SHSA students, regardless of experience level, are provided the opportunity to showcase their talents, which behooves both the artist and the audience member. Significantly, SHSA offers weekday performances of productions for area schools. At a time when many schools are cutting back on arts programming, a trip to the Ursuline Arts Center is an outstanding opportunity to expose students to the power and wonder of live theatre and the arts.

Dance The dance program provides a ballet-based curriculum with additional emphasis in tap, modern, and jazz techniques. Faculty create a nurturing, yet professional and concentrated environment where dancers from age three and up are encouraged to explore their potential. With roots that run deep, Louisville prides itself on being an exceptional Southern city. Today, the city is well known for being home to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, the Kentucky Derby (at Churchill Downs), Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), the University of Louisville and its Cardinals, Louisville Slugger baseball bats, and three of Kentucky’s six Fortune 500 companies.

Those who find themselves hungry or thirsty in Louisville are in luck. Dubbed the Culinary Capital of Bourbon Country, Louisville boasts more than 2,500 restaurants, which include numerous James Beard nominated chefs and restaurants. In fact, Bon Appetit Magazine has called Louisville “one of the best foodie small towns in America.” Zagat says, “Louisville is one of the seven up and coming foodie towns in America,” and Food & Wine Magazine calls Louisville’s East Market Street “one of the 10 Best Foodie Streets in America.” In addition to boundary pushing twists on Southern cuisine, Louisville offers the “Urban Bourbon Experience” that features the world’s only, city-wide trail filled with award-winning micro-distilleries, exhibits, and craft cocktail destinations.

Once you’ve had your fill of food and drink, you can explore the cultural attractions that make Louisville one-of-a-kind. Stroll through the award-winning, multicultural center dedicated to the life and legacy of Louisville’s native son, Muhammad Ali. Learn the story behind Ali’s incredible life and even step into the boxing ring to take on the Champ. You can also get an up-close look at the Olympic torch he used to light the cauldron at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

In Louisville, it’s a quick jump from boxing to baseball. At the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory you can see how the famous bats are made or take a swing with historic replica bats in the batting cages. If you still want more sport, experience the greatest two minutes in racing at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Be a part of the thrills and traditions of the race as you watch the “Greatest Race” in a 360-degree theatre. Tour the historic Churchill Downs to learn the history of the track. The fun doesn’t end there. Louisville has a man-made, 17-mile cavern that lies beneath the city and is home to four unique attractions. One of the largest caverns in the U.S., the Louisville Mega Cavern offers a historical tram tour of the cavern, the Mega Quest ropes course, the only underground zip line course—Mega Zips—and first-of-its-kind Mega Underground Bikes Course with over 12 miles of interconnected trails. Louisville also has one of the largest and most ambitious metropolitan park projects in the nation; The Parklands of Floyd Fork were built to serve as city-shaping infrastructure. Explore four parks linked by a park drive in this first-rate urban trail system that features a remarkable waterfall. The Parklands features hiking trails, multi-use paths, playgrounds, road biking and mountain bike trails, guided hikes, and canoeing/paddling opportunities—all within four parks.

Clearly, Louisville has earned its reputation as a special and unique destination for tourists and a beloved home to its residents.

Louisville also has a rich history as a large Catholic community. The archdiocese was formed in 1808 after Pope Pius VII subdivided the primal see of Baltimore into the Dioceses of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Bardstown, KY (moved to Louisville in 1841). Today, the Archdiocese of Louisville extends throughout 24 counties in Central Kentucky and its 110 parishes and missions serve nearly 200,000 Catholics, with approximately 80% of those in the Louisville Metro area.

This is an extraordinary and complex institution with a high-profile presence in the Greater Louisville community. The next President will need to be a faith-filled, entrepreneurial leader and team builder who can work collaboratively with the board and leadership team to achieve the bold ambitions currently embodied in the strategic plan. This is a classic “take it to the next level” leadership opportunity. The School is rock solid in every way and positioned for even greater levels of prominence and excellence. That said, competition continues to be keen in the Louisville community requiring leadership that can articulate the compelling value proposition of the school and create demand for the unique gifts of a Sacred Heart education.

Candidates should also be mindful of the following opportunities and challenges:

• Maintaining SHS’s Catholic and Ursuline identity as the Sisters’ involvement with the Schools decreases.

• Managing enrollment, especially at the Model School where competition is keenest.• Embracing and fostering diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the School.• Executing the current plan while forging a bold vision that has broad support and consensus in

the community.

• Maintaining high standards in faith, academics, and across the student experience.• Creating robust demand for the SHS experience.• Continuing to support the unique qualities of each school while promoting a sense of unity among

the four schools. • Assessing the capital and endowment needs and preparing for the next campaign. • Instilling and inspiring an ethos of giving back and fulfilling the mission of the Ursuline Sisters.

The School operates in the President/Principal Model with four school heads reporting to the President who serves as the chief executive officer for the entire institution. The board seeks highly accomplished candidates who are faith-filled and visionary and who can capitalize on the momentum and brand while fulfilling the mandate to become a globally recognized IB World school.

The following qualities and qualifications will be expected:

• Mission-driven leader who has the ability to forge a mission-based vision.• Humble servant leader who is unapologetically strong as a practicing Catholic.• Dynamic and creative leader who can translate vision into action and secure all resources

required to fulfill the mission and ambitions of the School.• Spiritual and inspiring person who strives for the betterment of all.• A high profile, articulate, and energetic leader who can be the face of the Schools in the greater

community.• Team builder with strong values and personal integrity.• Outstanding financial management and operational management skills.

• Strategic planner who can bring people together in mission.• Embraces research-based best practices in all areas of school life including teaching, learning,

and faith formation. • A “coach” who is able to develop the talents and skills in others.

The board welcomes candidates from other Catholic or independent schools as well as accomplished executives from other mission-critical career venues such as higher education; non-profit foundations, associations, charities and the like; or the corporate, civic, and professional services arenas. While knowledge of education and school operations is preferred, other qualities and experiences are also valued, especially visionary, entrepreneurial leadership and the ability to inspire, lead a high performing team, and create demand for the extraordinary gifts of a Catholic education. This is one of the finest Catholic school leadership opportunities in the country.
