Welcome to our February newsletter, the first of 2019. I trust that the summer break was both restful and rejuvenating, and that you managed to hit that metaphorical refresh button, including enjoying quality time with those dearest to you. My husband and I enjoyed a ‘Staycation’ and delighted in the beauties of a holiday at home in Taradise. We are blessed.

Our foundress, Euphrasie Barbier, established the Order of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. Mission Sisters travelled from France more than 150 years ago with the purpose of providing education and, ultimately, liberation to the women and tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand. We give thanks to our foundress, Euphrasie Barbier, and to the Mission Sisters, who to this day continue with their mission, and we look forward to growing a better understanding of their virtuous way of life, as lived through Contemplation, Communion and Mission.

Last Wednesday we celebrated Waitangi Day, a day that has been granted public holiday status so that New Zealanders can reflect on who we are as a nation. New Zealand is made up of a great big melting pot of cultures and ethnicities with people whose ancestors have come from all over the world. No one group of people have any more right to occupy Aotearoa/New Zealand than another, and it is a privilege to live in a country where all people have equal rights. On Waitangi Day, we recognise Māori as the tangata whenua, the people of the land with whom the Crown signed the Treaty. We welcomed new Year 7 students and their families to Manawa Tapu with Mass at St Joseph’s New Plymouth. It was with pleasure that we welcomed our brothers from Francis Douglas Memorial College, and it was fitting to gather as one community from the Combined Parish of Ngamotu to mark the beginning of a new stage of our tamariki’s lives.

All students were welcomed to the college with powhiri, a powerful symbolic weaving together of the 710 students of the college. Thank you to Troy Wano for speaking for manuhiri and to Matua Sonny for speaking on behalf of tangata whenua. Our Opening Mass was the last of the series of start of year activities. At this Mass, the 2019 student leaders received their leadership badges and both students and staff pledged their commitment to their responsibilities. Mass is integral to who we are as a Catholic community, gathering in worship and remembering, that through the stories shared in the gospel, that we are all servants, engaged in the work of being the person that Jesus has asked us to become; demonstrated through our theme for the year ‘Living our Lives with Love’, and whakatauki ‘Manaaki Tangata’; be kind to one another.

In staffing news, we welcome Warwick Foy as our new Leader of Learning, Pathways. Mr Foy comes to us as the previous General Manager of Taranaki Futures, the current chairperson of Careers and Transition Education New Zealand, and as a former teacher, Head of Department and Year-level Dean across a number of secondary school settings. Emily Scott has joined us as our Leader of Learning, English. She is an experienced teacher, and has held Middle Management positions at both Spotswood College and Opunake High School in recent years, where she most recently held the position of Head of English. Miss Scott is a former ‘Sacred Heart girl’ and she is relishing the opportunity of returning to her turangawaewae. Also, returning to her old stomping ground, is Wendy Mulligan who has spent recent years working in Catholic schools in London and comes to us from Stratford Primary School where she has taught for the past year. Miss Mulligan is a specialist teacher of Religious Studies and she is very excited to be teaching her favourite subject again, in this special character environment. Helen Basilie relieved in Year 7 and Year 8 last year, and this year she has taken over the Year 7 class become vacant due to Nicky Hill having won a Teach NZ study leave position. Mrs Hill is helping us out in the first five weeks of this year and will be a welcome extra pair of hands through the busyness of Term 1. Emma Cronin has returned from two years’ maternity leave following the arrival of her third child, Esme. We are pleased to welcome Mrs Cronin back into the fold, and I know there will be some students who will be delighted to re-aquaint themselves. Preeta Menon is our hard-working and dedicated International Student Dean and ESOL teacher who has full time work this year with the addition of Junior English to her teaching load. We are grateful to our Board of Trustees for their generous investment in Teacher Aide support. This has enabled us to re-engage with Bernadette Forsyth as a BoT-funded teacher aide, extra to the three permanent teacher aides on staff. Sound financial management and prioritization of resourcing has enabled this to occur.

Further in this newsletter you will find information on our newly launched college App, which I encourage you to upload, and we are also seeking your opinion on newsletter length and regularity so we can better understand how you prefer to receive our communications. Please, share your views. You will also find information regarding our up-coming Meet the Subject Teacher evenings, which we very much look forward to welcoming you to.

Welcome to the year ahead at Manawa Tapu, where both our college and hostel are full, and brimming with effervescent life and hope that youthful exuberance brings. Manaaki Tangata

“Living our lives with love” Gaudete et Exultate, Pope Francis

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

    1 John 3: 16-18

Our College theme for the year reinforces that, at its core, love is “active in nature and selfless in direction.” As

children of God, we are united by our common humanity, created in the image of God, and called to live in active

love of others. Our HEART values of Acceptance and Togetherness remind us that “whatsoever we do for one of

the least of our brothers and sisters, we do for God. (Mt 25:40).

Catholic Parish of New Plymouth Sacramental Programme

Preparation for First Reconciliation begins on February 24th at St Joseph’s Church after 8.30 Mass and before 10.30 Mass (so families are able to attend either Mass). The programme will take place over three Sundays ( February 24th, March 3rd, March 17th) and the Sacrament will be celebrated on March 21st. Preparation for First Holy Communion will take place in Term 3. Enrolment forms are available from Michelle Butler, our Young Families Minister, [email protected] or from Carole Tipler, our College Chaplain, [email protected]

    from Bishop Charles

    Kia ora tātou

Welcome back to the new term and a special welcome to those who are new to the Catholic schools’ whānau. You have made the right decision.

A couple of Sundays ago I was celebrating a ‘usual’ Sunday Mass. What was different however was that I was among a crowed 750,000 (the large majority in their 20s).

World Youth Day, in Panama City, Central America was the venue, and the presider was our Pope, Papa Francesco.

This was the first WYD I have been to. Before leaving NZ my expectations had been neutral, but I returned from our two weeks in Panama (about 25 Kiwis contribution to the 750,000!) invigorated and in deep awe of the gift of our universal Church and faith. Papa Francesco was in great form and the welcome of the Panamanian people was infectious.

Please follow my Facebook www.facebook.com/BishopCharlesDrennan blog and photos of Panama WYD, or read more on our diocesan website site www.pndiocese.org.nz/. My reflections are heartfelt and I thank the Holy Spirit for ensuring the Church keeps dynamic in all we seek to be for Christ.

    Manaaki Time

Your daughter may have talked to you about “Manaaki time”. This replaces “Vertical Form Time” in the mornings and at some times after lunch.

Year 7 and 8 have Manaaki time with their homeroom teacher. Year 9-13 students have Manaaki time with the same teacher who will also be their GEMS teacher.

The purpose of Manaaki time is to help support you and your daughter while she is at SHGC. Your daughter’s manaaki teacher is your “first point of call” if you have any questions or concerns regarding your daughter’s learning or wellbeing at school.

Very shortly, you will receive an email message from your daughter’s manaaki teacher. The purpose of this email is to make initial contact and to introduce themselves. The most effective way to communicate with your daughter’s manaaki teacher is through that email address. Manaaki teachers will be able to either deal with any concerns directly or will find the right person for you to work with.

We hope that this will make communication with the school, easier and more effective for you as caregivers.

    Meet the Teacher Evenings

    Meet the Teacher Evening—Years 7-8 Tuesday 19th February 6.00pm —7.30pm

The evening will begin in the Events Centre, then follow your daughter’s timetable and spend 15 minutes in each of her classes to connect with her teachers and her learning.

    Refreshments will be provided.

    Meet the Teacher Evening—Years 9-13 Thursday 14th February 6.00pm —8.30pm

The evening will begin in the Events Centre, before meeting your daughter’s Manaaki Teacher, then follow your daughter’s timetable and spend 15 minutes in each of her classes to connect

with her teachers and her learning.

If you need to visit your daughter at the school – please ensure that you report to the school office first. We need to ensure that we know who is on site at any time.

Beginning of and end of school day—please do not drop off or pick up your daughter inside the school grounds. We do not have adequate parking nor room to easily turn around. Ask her to walk across the road at the crossing to Paynters Avenue where it is much safer to park. You can use the parking ramps near the bridge.

We do not hand out panadol (or any other medication) at school, unless we have permission noted on our system from a parent/caregiver. If your daughter is unwell, our policy is to contact you to pick her up as soon as possible. If your daughter needs to leave the school grounds she will need a signed note from home. If she does not

bring one, we will contact you before giving permission.

    ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE

School Break Times—We begin the day at 8.40am. Thank you for ensuring your daughter arrives on time. Interval has been extended by 5 minutes to help ensure an adequate break. It is important that your daughter takes the opportunity to eat something at this time. Lunchtime is 1.15pm—2.00pm, and is 5 minutes shorter than last year. School finishes every day at 3.20pm, and 3pm on Wednesdays.

Student appointments/illness – Admin office first contact.—We are finding that because a large percentage of our students have phones they are not following correct procedure for sickness/appointments. If a student is unwell or they wish to leave school due to an appointment, please tell them to come to the front office so staff can make contact parent/caregivers if necessary. If the office staff are not made aware of these situations it becomes difficult to locate the student or more importantly assist the student if they are unwell.

Update contact details—It is important that we have correct contact information for families and caregivers of our students. Please can you let us know if you change any details such as email, address, phone numbers, and emergency contacts.

Student accounts—Individual student accounts will be emailed to families by 15th February 2019. You are most welcome to pay these off during the year by making smaller, more manageable payments via internet banking. The school’s fees bank account is shown on the statement and we ask that you use the student number (also shown on your statement) as a reference. Any queries please contact the main office or email [email protected]

Student Printing—All students receive a $10 printing credit at the start of Term 1 of each year. Once spent, students can top up their printing account with any amount at the main office with cash or via eftpos.

Signing in and out - Vistab—All visitors to the school are required to report to the main office on arrival. If staying on site you need to sign in and out on our Vistab system that will print out an ID sticker to wear while on site. Please remember to sign out at the end of your visit. A reminder that students also need to sign in for lateness and out via the student counter.

  • If your daughter has a device, then we encourage her to bring it to school with her every day. As a school we don't believe that mandating a particular device, because individual student needs differ. We have, however, put together the following recommendations for a digital device:

Wireless networking capability Minimum of 2GB Ram At least 5 hours of use from one battery charge A large enough screen to work with documents in order to create and edit content The ability to run a web browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari) that will allow it to access Internet and

other learning resources Has software that enables word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, image manipulation, video and

audio editing (these can be cloud based) Has a keyboard or potential to connect to a keyboard (i.e. Bluetooth) Is lightweight, but robust enough to handle daily use Is in a protective carrying case

Local suppliers put together special educational bundles at this time of year and there are many inexpensive devices that would be suitable. See here on our website for details.

Please don’t hesitate to speak with us if there are barriers to bringing a device to school, so that we can prepare for your daughter not to be disadvantaged.

If there are any issues getting connected to the network, they can come to 109 on Wednesdays to see the technician.

If students are interested in learning a bit more about the use of I.T. at the school, they are welcome to join the Student Avengers. We meet Wednesday lunchtimes in 109. Listen out for the notices or see Mrs Quigan for more details. A copy of our Student User agreements, which should have been signed by all students this year, can be found on our website under Our School—Digital Learning: See here for Year 7 & 8 See here for Years 9-13

While at Sacred Heart Girls’ College, your daughter is also able to download Microsoft software on up to 15 devices free of charge using her school email and password. There is no need to buy Microsoft Office software. Go to: office.com to log in with student details and click on the button Install Office 2016.

We have set up specific Facebook page for the PE/SPORTS Department called SHGC

There are many girls from our school who achieve some fantastic results in their chosen sports. However, these results are not always relayed to the Sports Department. We want to be able to acknowledge these achievements in the school newsletter, social media or in assemblies and need everyone’s help to ensure we don’t miss anyone out. Please let Ms Aroha Lynch, the Sports Co-ordinator, know by emailing her at [email protected], leaving a note with the details on it at the sports office or messaging through the Facebook page SHGC Manawa New Plymouth.

WINTER SPORTS TRIALS: All girls Year 7-13 have been asked to sign up on the noticeboards for their relevant Sports trial (hockey, netball, basketball, football), and to find a schedule of the upcoming days/times, please click here. SPORT REGISTRATION FORM: Finally….. all girls intending to play sport at any level in any term, must complete a sports registration form, this also has been distributed, but if you require a home copy, then please click here. Itinerant Music Lessons: These music lessons are getting underway for the year. Timetables are up outside the music room, and often change so please check regularly. For the first few weeks we are working hard to ensure lesson times do not disrupt other classes. Please let Mrs Hunter know if there is a problem, and we can try to make it work. Our hours are limited, and many groups are over-subscribed, so you may be put on a waiting list. Students who miss 2 lessons without a reason are in danger of being withdrawn. As these are group lessons, it is difficult with students missing lessons, and the teacher having to then repeat what the others have already learnt. Musical Instruments: If you are bringing an instrument to school, either your own or a school hire instrument, please ensure it is labelled with your name, and stored in the music office when not being used. Please do not leave instruments in the practice rooms. School Choirs: Our junior and senior choirs will be getting underway next week. Senior choir rehearsals will be in the music room on Tuesday lunchtimes. Sign up now in the music room! To avoid the time being wasted, it would be appreciated that you do not plan to use the tuck shop on a Tuesday at lunchtime, and maybe a bigger morning tea and a smaller lunch would be a wise idea. Our junior choir – the Trebles – will again be rehearsing in class time. Our first rehearsal will be next week on Tuesday 19th Feb, at 2.20pm in the Performing Arts Centre. Students will have 2 weeks to give it a go before deciding if they wish to commit to being a member of this awesome group. School Bands: Our Concert band, combined with FDMC, will again be rehearsing at SHGC on Monday afternoons from 3.30 – 5pm. All instruments welcome, and you don’t need to be an advanced player. See Mrs Hunter if you need more info, or come along to a practice and see for yourself. Other Musical Opportunities: Keep an eye out in the music room, on the various notice boards in the foyer area, and listen to the daily notices to hear about all the other opportunities available. Rock bands will be starting up soon, Chamber music groups are forming (small instrumental groups) and can include all levels of players. There are 2 song-writing competitions open already! There are also several opportunities to go to a variety of concerts – all students who are keen are welcome. Please see Mrs Hunter for more information on anything musical.
