ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ URGES THE FAITHFUL TO KEEP HELPING EACH OTHER “IN THIS

TIME WHEN FAITH IS TESTED”

---In his weekly column the Archbishop recognized the provision of more than 300,000 meals to low-income children in March alone, plus clothing, shelter and the financial support provided to those in need---

Speaking on behalf of all the priests in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, in his weekly column published in the Archdiocese’s multimedia news platform Angelus News, Archbishop José H. Gomez expressed the shared long-ing of all priests to once again be together with the faithful during this Easter Season, and acknowledged that although there might be frustration due to the extended quarantine and stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) this is a time to reflect on how God is calling us to show love for him by serving our neighbors.

The column is available online to share widely with the faithful through our parishes, schools and ministries at https://angelusnews.com/voices/see-how-they-love-one-another/ (English) and https://angelusnews.com/archbishops-esp/miren-como-se-aman/ (Spanish). The article can also be posted on Facebook by sharing this post: https://www.facebook.com/archbishopgomez/posts/3760653940643249.

“In my own reflections I see God calling us, in a most dramatic way, to realize how much we need him, how we cannot live without him. But I also see God calling us to a deeper sense of solidarity, to realize that we are re-sponsible for one another, that we depend on one another, and we have to take care of one another,” said Arch-bishop Gomez in his column, “See how they love one another,” (Miren cómo se aman)

Archbishop Gomez recalls how in the first century of Christianity, when plagues and pestilence overwhelmed the population, non-Christians marveled as they watched Christians show their charity and compassion to others. “And it has been beautiful for me to witness so many of you showing your love for God by serving your neigh-bors in this time of crisis,” continued Archbishop Gomez. “Although our Catholic school buildings are closed, we are still educating tens of thousands of young people every day through distance learning. And we are feed-ing thousands of poor children every day, offering ‘grab and go’ meals at our schools. In the past month alone, we provided more than 300,000 meals. “And although our church buildings are closed, our parishes remain ‘open.’ We are helping people in our food pantries and giving financial assistance to our neighbors who need food, clothing, and shelter. Our Hearts to Serve hotline is assisting hundreds or people seeking everything from help paying bills to mental health re-sources.” Archbishop Gomez also acknowledged the “beautiful network of compassion” that has been formed between the Archdiocese and agencies such as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Knights of Columbus, Habitat for Hu-manity, and the archdiocesan Catholic Communication Collaboration (C3).

He encouraged the faithful to intensify their prayers and to keep loving one another “in this time when faith is tested.” For the latest news and information from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, sign up for our the Archdiocese’s free Always Forward newsletter at https://newsletter.angelusnews.com/.

BEWARE:

CYBER SCAMMERS LATEST TEXT SCAMS TARGETING ADLA SCHOOLS AND PARISHES

“Smishing” ( SMS phishing ) is a type of fraudulent activity that involves using SMS or text messages to trick people into giving up personal or confidential in-formation so that money can be\ fraudulently obtained. Perpetrators use various social engineering techniques to gain the trust of a victim and usually provide specific instructions, which if followed, usually result in some sort of monetary loss to the victim. Smishing is very much like phishing (email-based scams). Perpetrators will impersonate someone you know that is in some position of authority (a priest, teacher, manager, police, or government agency) and will advise you of some emergency or crisis that re-quires your attention. They will ask (or demand) that you do something to resolve the situation (provide your passwords, click on a link that takes you to some web site or buy a gift card and text them the card infor-mation). They may even ask you to call them at the number they are texting from to “verify” that they are who they say they are.

DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM. If you receive such texts, do the following: • Take time to consider your actions before responding to suspicious text messages. • Ask yourself if the sender, if genuine, would really contact you via text. • If in doubt, call the published main number of the parish, school or administrative office from whom the text claims to have been sent to authenticate the text message. • Remember that even if the text message seems to come from someone you trust, their number may have been hacked or spoofed. Look closely at the area code of the number. If it is not a local area code then the text may not be legitimate. • Do not click on links in text messages unless you are 100% certain that they are genuine and well inten-tioned. • Do not respond to the text message if you doubt its origin. A response could be used as a verification that your number is responsive to text messages and you may be inundated with similar messages. Hackers build and sell lists of numbers to others for fraudulent pur-poses.

DID YOU KNOW?

“If you see something, say something”

We see this warning in airports and schools, but experts say it’s also a great way for parents to think about Internet safe-ty for their children. One of the best ways to protect chil-dren using the Internet is to actually engage with them in what they’re doing: play the games they play and check out their profile pages with them. Discuss online respect and rules for what can and cannot be shared. Regular conversa-tion and monitoring helps keep children safe online. For more information, read the article by Catholic News Ser-vice, “Vigilance by parents and their children called key to safe internet use.”
