VATICAN ISSUES NEW DOCUMENT ON CHRISTIAN BURIAL AND CREMATION Last Oct 25th, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doc-trine of the Faith published a new instruction on the burial of the dead and on the conservation of the ashes in cases of cremation. The instruction reiterates the long held view that the Church is not opposed to the practice of cremation, though it continues to recommend that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places. However the new document insists that ashes should not be kept in private houses and that the scattering of ashes on land or at sea is not permitted. EL VATICANO PUBLICÓ UN DOCUMENTO SOBRE LA SEPULTURA Y CREMACIÓN La Iglesia reitera la preferencia de la sepultura de los cuerpos respecto a la cremación. Lo hace a través de la nueva instrucción de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la fe, Ad resurgendum cum Christo sobre la sepultura de los difuntos y la conservación de las cenizas en caso de cremación. El documento – presentando en la Sala de Prensa de la Santa Sede el martes 25 de octubre – subraya especial-mente el hecho de que no está consentida la conservación de las cenizas en la propia casa. Efectivamente, si por motivos legítimos se opta por la cremación, «la regla establece que las cenizas de los fieles deban ser conser-vadas en un lugar sagrado», es decir, en el cementerio o en una iglesia «o en un área especialmente dedicada a ello». A mayor razón, la instrucción, para evitar todo tipo de «equívoco panteísta, naturalista o nihilista», no permi-te «la dispersión de las cenizas en el aire, en la tierra o en el agua o en cualquier otro modo, o la conversión de las cenizas quemadas en recuerdos conmemorativos, en pie-zas de joyería o en otros objetos». Lo cual e debido a que sólo la sepultura en los cemente-rios o en otros lugares sagrados respeta adecuadamente la piedad y el respeto debidos a cuerpos de fieles difuntos. De tal manera la Iglesia confirma la fe «en la resurrec-ción y se separa de actitudes que ven en la muerte la anu-lación definitiva de la persona». Como si fuera una etapa una etapa «en el proceso de reencarnación». En el documento se reitera que sólo en caso de circuns-tancias graves y excepcionales el obispo diocesano, de acuerdo con la Conferencia episcopal o el Sínodo de los obispos, puede conceder el permiso para la conservación de las cenizas en la propia casa.

CLOSING CELEBRATION OF JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is about to end officially on Sunday, November 20th. However, we are cele-brating the closing of this event in our parish community on Saturday, November 12th at 5:00 pm Vigil Mass. On this event, we invite all the coordinators of the different parish ministries to attend this closing event of the Jubilee of Mer-cy. Refreshments will be served after Mass outside the Church.

During election, let your conscience be your guide

The presidential election that is now few days away is being described in the most dramatic of terms. One candidate calls it “a moment of reckoning,” the other “a mo-

ment of crisis.” Fueled by the media, and by their campaign machines, the candidates are seeking to generate emotion and, perhaps, anxi-ety about the consequences of our vote. Most of us can agree that when we are anxious and pressured – when our buttons are being pushed – we don’t make the best decisions. And it’s not just the TV commercials, and the press conferences, and the tweets that create this anxiety, it’s probably also the conversations and/or arguments we’re having with our co-workers, neighbors, friends and family members about who is the better candidate. It becomes emotional, and personal. Lines are drawn and, sometimes, hurtful words and actions erupt. Worse yet, this doesn’t lead us to a decision that reflects our values, our faith and our conscience – the very places from which an act of Faithful Citizenship should come. Our task, then, is to block out the noise and do some true reflection and prayer about the candidates and issues on which we will vote. This will take time and a depth of thought that may be hard to find amidst our busy lives. Our Church teaches that a well-formed conscience is our greatest ally in discerning matters of politics and public policy. But how do we reach it? The Catechism of the Catholic Church (nn. 1776-1802) advises this process: - We set aside predispositions and open ourselves to the truth and what is right in a particular situation or issue. - We study the Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church. - We examine the facts and the background information on the particular issue or candidate. - We prayerfully reflect to discern the will of God. Does this sound deliberate? Time consuming? Maybe, but, as many have pointed out, the “right” choice in this election is not readily apparent. Indeed, there is no candidate that perfectly aligns with the teachings of our faith. We have no choice but to weigh the issues and candidates carefully. Some might prefer a Catholic Voters Guide to make the choices for them. Others do not see any relationship between their faith and the election and believe the Church should “just stay out of politics.” Well, your church is not going to tell you who to vote for, but it surely will encourage you to vote and it will help you prepare. The big issues of the campaign, which include abortion, immigration, jobs and the environment, have moral dimensions that transcend politics. That is why, we are called as Catholics to be part of the civic process. It is part of our living the Gospel. So I invite you in the coming days to continue to study the issues and candidates that will be before us on November 8. Do not be swept away by the current of hostility and hysteria. Look through the lens of the Gospel and ask yourself im-portant questions: How is the dignity of every human person being served? What is best for the common good? How is marriage and family being promoted and protected? What is being done for the least among us? Is religious liberty being respected? Where is the mercy of God reflected? THANKGIVING TOGETHERNESS DINNER

Thanksgiving is a time to come together and celebrate the bounty the Lord has given each of us. So, in grate-ful appreciation, a delicious Thanksgiving Togetherness Dinner is being planned for our Sacred Heart Church family, which will be held in our Parish Hall on Mon-day, November 21, 6:30 pm. We are in need of the support of our church community to make this a suc-cessful and rewarding evening of good food and good friendship. Here’s how you can help:

1. Your financial support toward purchase of need food items;

2. Your contribution of paper goods/utensils; 3. Volunteering to assist with the logistics of set

up, decorating, clean up, and resetting tables and chairs.

If you are willing to help, please bring your contribu-tions to the Ministry Center by Monday, November 14th. So that we can adequately plan for the amount of food, refreshments and seating required, we are asking that you make your reservation (s) beginning Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, respectively. En las próximas semanas, vamos a distribuir una solici-tud para nuestra compaña anual de mayordomía. En la carta, les pido reflexionar y orar sobre cómo puede ayu-dar a la Iglesia de Sagrado Corazón en el año que viene y les ruego a considerar un aumento en su donación regular. El año fiscal 2015-2016 fue un poco difícil en la que tuvimos un déficit de presupuesto al final del año.

Tenemos diferentes programas y ministerios diseñados para apoyar espiritualmente y dar orientación a nuestro feligreses, y también tuvimos varios proyectos para me-jorar nuestras propiedades.

Cada uno de estos requiere un apoyo financiero. Es mi deseo que sea generoso en su apoyo monetario a la igle-sia y nuestros ministerios. Quiero que sigamos siendo una bendición para otros, especialmente para aquellos que tienen mucho menos de lo que nosotros tenemos. Su entrega generosa, fiel y amable hará todo posible.
