historically black college or university that was

established prior to 1964, whose principal

mission was, and is, the education of black

Americans.”

the US

• 103 HBCUs

• Very popular – role models, peer support

order to survive as institutions

• Bluefield State College is a designated

HBCU but has about 90% white students
