Shipmates,
As we head into February, January has been one of the driest on record. As the
reservoirs try to keep as much water as they can the water levels have been
pretty low at the club. But thanks to our dredging crew everyone still had water
under their boat. As I write this, we have a storm coming in but it certainly
looks like it will be another dry year.
Again this year, Susan and I have the pleasure of Co-Captaining the Sweet-
hearts’ Cruise with PC Gordon and Kevin Hubble. We decided to stay in and
cruise at the Club. Friday night will be movie night. Saturday morning PJ
breakfast and games during the day. Saturday night we will start with a won-
derful dinner prepared by our own Kim Souza and two of her classmates at Le
Cordon Bleu Culinary School. Then we will finish the evening with a 50’s sock hop. Please plan on attend-
ing this great Cruise.
As we head straight into Spring and Summer, please plan on attending the many great cruises and events we
have planned. Highlights include: a Safety Saturday on March 14th coordinated by Safety Officer Rob Con-
nelly, the Old Salts Dinner to induct PC Jim Cameron on March 7th, and of course, cruises to great destina-
tions around the area.
Please watch the calendar and emails for work parties. There are a lot of projects that need to be done
around the Club. Please answer the call when the call goes out. Remember, your Club will not survive or
especially thrive without your time and talents.
Thank You,
Commodore Bruce & Susan Moneymaker
Walnut Grove Marina Fire—The boats
were tied up in a series of covered
slips along a stretch of water known as
the Snodgrass Slough. The cause of
the fire remains under investigation.
There were no reports of injuries.
However, it was reported boat fuel
and debris were in the river and agen-
cies such as the Coast Guard, Depart-
ment of Fish and Wildlife, and Office
of Emergency Services were contacted
to make sure the area is safe, especial-
ly for waterfowl. The Ryde Hotel of-
fered one week of free boarding and 30
days of free boat docking for fire vic-
tims.

House Happenings — by Vice Commodore Chuck Lenert
Shipmates,
As I write this, we are almost at the end of January already. We had the Club’s
first TGIF of the year on January 9th. The Cooking Crew was Paul Hairell, Alicia
Ortiz, and Tim and Linda Bunyan with specialty dessert creator Janet Anders. We
had a rousing five games of Bingo, called by our, one and only, Commodore
Bruce Moneymaker. All the Shipmates appeared to have a great time playing bin-
go and winning the cash...we will be doing it again at another TGIF.
Shipmate Sue Bettis coordinated the 30th Annual Chili Cook-off and Decadent
Dessert contest on Saturday, January 17th. PC Frank Thall, its originator, flew in
from out-of-state to attend the event this year. We all enjoyed seeing him. The
Galley Crew for this event was Larry Best, Chef of the House Chili, Sue and Bob
Baker, along with Lisa Shultz making the cornbread and salad...and of course, all the many contestants who
made Chili and Desserts. It took many volunteers to make this event a success...thanks to everyone. The
winner list and pictures are found elsewhere in this Wingdammer
Following the Chili cook-off on Sunday, January 18th, we had the Pirates Breakfast ran by Guyla Yoak. If
you haven’t been to one, you have missed the great pirate ship cake center pieces that Guyla makes. Her
Cooking Crew was Joyce Martinez, Vanna Turner with friend Milo Roe, Steve and Sandy Piekarski, and Sue
Bettis. It was a very enjoyable breakfast.
The January General Meeting dinner was prepared by Shipmates Andee Tyler, Jim MacInnis, Pauli Ayres,
Larry and Martha Lowder, along with Tony and Lisa Delaney. The meal was delicious from entre to dessert.
Thanks to all of you for your time and expertise in creating such great meals.
A special “Thank You” (which is past due) goes out to Past Commodore and Old Salt Tony Phelps, who
while attending a General Meeting, decided the SYC Burgee sign on the front of the podium needed to be re-
furbished. He volunteered right then to get it done. He took the sign home and spent much time researching
companies and designs that would meet his design plan. At the November General Meeting, he brought in the
new sign and mounted it on the SYC podium and presented it back to the Club. We appreciate all the work
and effort he took in getting the meeting podium looking sharp again.
Another “Thank You” goes out to Shipmate Rob Connelly. At the end of last year, Rob decided it was time
to take down the sign on the front of the Club and refurbish it. The sign was actually falling apart as it hung
out front. He took it home and spent many, many hours rebuilding the sign and making it ‘brand new’ and
sturdy enough to last for many more years to come. He presented the sign back to the Club at the January
General Meeting.
It is so great to have Old Salts like PC Phelps and Shipmates such as Rob Connelly helping us keep our Club
ship shape! Please take the time when you see Tony and Rob to thank them for all their hard work!

On The Water — by Rear Commodore Ken Stites
Hello Shipmates,
Here we go! My favorite time of year is approaching and CRUISING SEASON
is almost upon us.
The Fellowship Dinner is fast approaching and Kelli, Janet and Kathy are mak-
ing the final preparations for an outstanding meal and reveal of the 2015 cruising
schedule. The first cruise of the season will be an event at the Club due to some
issues with the City of Sacramento. The Hubble's and Moneymakers will be
hosting the Sweetheart Cruise and have planned a great weekend for all. Cruise
credits will be in play and I expect to see all hands on deck.
Kelli and Josie have been working hard in the bar and I am very happy with the
increased patronage. Every dime you spend at Club bar/events goes back into
your Club making things better for all of us. Just a quick reminder to all, please wear your name tags when
the bar is open and keep the glassware up in the Club. We are confronted with the prospect of having to buy
more glasses due to shortage. I would appreciate it if all would check their boats and return any Club glass-
ware you have to the bar.
Thanks to the Captains and Co-Captains and Debbie for making the process smooth and enjoyable. Those
who have not cruised with the Club, please make it a priority to fellowship with your friends and use your
boats for what they were intended.
See you “On The Water!”

Sacramento Yacht Club — Safety Officer Message
Galley Crew: Guyla Yoak, Joyce Martinez, Vanna Turner, Sue Bettis, Sandy & Steve
Safety Officer
Rob Connelly
Greetings Shipmates,
The recent marina fire in Walnut Grove is a stark reminder that boating and fire safety is
everyone’s business and that bad things do happen to good boaters! Lets all do what we
can to be as safe as possible and make fire safety a priority on your list of things to ad-
dress!
Do you remember the top reasons for fires onboard from the November update?
Boat US 2014 Statistical Data
1) AC and DC wiring/appliance - 55%
2) Engine/Transmission Overheat - 24%
3) Fuel Leak - 8%
4) Miscellaneous - 7%
5) Unknown - 5%
6) Stove - 1%
Please reserve the date on your calendar for Safety Saturday coming up on March 14th!!
We hope to answer all of your questions and make sure everyone walks away with a better understanding of boating safe-
ty.
CPR Training (to include automated defibr illator operation) and a CPR cer tificate.
Skipper Saver (basic navigation skills for the fir st mate) .
Basic Seamanship (knots, lines, do’s and don’ts of secur ing your boat to a dock or another boat and anchor ing)
plus how to avoid electric shock drowning and our local Coast Guard Auxiliary services available to the Club and
members.
Electronic Navigation Aids (char t plotter basics and how smart phones, laptops and other IOS devices can aid
in navigation).
Fire Safety (fire extinguisher training, when to fight and when to run, recer tify your extinguishers).
CPR will cost $65.00 per person and it does include a certificate. The class will be roughly 3.5 hours long which means if
you are also doing the Skipper Saver class, you will doing that in the afternoon. Just a heads up so you know what to ex-
pect, I don’t anticipate a schedule problem squeezing everything in. We will get the CPR class underway promptly at
9am. The CPR fees need to be settled between the student and the instructor at the conclusion of the class.
The fire extinguisher re-certification will depend on how many extinguishers that we get. The best price I could get is
$8.00 for a 5 lb. ABC if we have at least 20 to refill. Since we should all be doing this to maintain a safe boat, I’m antici-
pating this won’t be an issue either and I am proceeding as planned. Please remove your extinguishers from your boat and
have them gathered near the sitting bench at the entrance to the Club by 9am with your name clearly marked on them.
You will need to settle your bill with the extinguisher company at the time of service.
I have quite a few responses and lots of positive feedback so far. I’m looking forward to a fun day that will ultimately
make our Club, our boats and our life(s) just a little better than before we started! Once again, look for the sign up sheet at
the February General Meeting and fill it out! Or print out and use the one on the next page of the Wingdammer. Don’t
forget to return it to the SYC Office!
Thank You
Shipmate AKA Safety Officer, Rob Connelly

Sacramento Yacht Club — SYC Gate Instructions/Form
Attention: Sacramento Yacht Club Members
Many cars have “built-in” transmitters. Most of these transmitters can be programmed to open the gate at the
Yacht Club. If you are interested in having your “built-in” transmitter programmed open the gate, fill out the
following form and return to the Club. You will receive notification of the dates that we are coding vehicles.
After you respond to a certain date, we will set an appointment for you.
In order to program your “built-in” transmitter to open the gate, your vehicle, with the owners’ manual, must
be at the Club. There are several steps to go through to code your vehicle. Please allow 15-20 minutes to pro-
gram your “built-in” transmitter. Then up to 24 hours to synchronize the system. Thank you.
If you would like your name to be on the gate roster, please fill out the following information and submit to the
SYC Office. We can set up two names per family.
Name that you would like to appear at the gate: (1)________________________________________________
(2)________________________________________________
The phone number you would like to use to open the gate:(1)________________________________________
(2)_______________________________________
(The names are listed alphabetically, last name and first initial.)
Instructions to open the gate remotely
You can open the gate from anywhere you can receive a phone call! If you are having guests at the Club or on
the boat, you do not have to wait in the parking lot to open the gate for them. Just give them the following in-
structions and you can open the gate remotely:
1. Tell your guests to stop at the screen outside the gate.
2. Push # key to start (instructions are also on the screen).
3. Push # key again the reach the menu.
4. Push the # key to page through the alphabetical list until they find your name (use the * key to page back-
wards).
5. Enter the three-digit code to the right of your name. When this code is entered, the gate terminal will call
the phone number we have on file for you. When you answer the phone, your guest can tell you that they
are at the gate and they need it opened. At this point, you will press the 9 key on your phone and this will
open the gate.
In order for this process to work, you must have your name on the guest list.
