On Behalf of the Board of Directors,

Welcome!

What a year this has been . It seems as though every time you turn around, there is yet more bad news on every front . Ready for a change? So are we . And we’ve devised our own cultural stimulus plan for the 2009–2010 Season, featuring a pair of sparkling gems from the treasure chest of opera, and one dazzling new production displaying an array of exotic delights .

Sacramento Opera’s new season opens with this production of Donizetti’s comedy, The Elixir of Love on November 20, 22 and 24, 2009, a charming and wistful look at the foibles of young love emboldened by the misguided belief that true love can be found in a bottle . Elixir will be followed in February by Verdi’s gripping melodrama of the follies of love both won and lost, La Traviata, on February 26, 28, and March 2, 2010 . The season closes with an extraordinarily special treat, as we take a good look at two works being considered for future production . On May 7 and 9, 2010 only, we will present opera at its grandest in a Russian double-bill featuring concert stagings of extended highlights from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, both based on the works of one of Russia’s most acclaimed writers, Alexander Pushkin .

Undoubtedly, you too have been affected by the economic roller coaster ride this year . Even in the best of times, Sacramento Opera’s subscription and ticket sales cover

Greetings from the President

only 60% of our operating expense. The balance must come from contributions. Consider, if we had to rely on ticket sales alone, it would be necessary to raise ticket prices across the board by 40% to meet our financial obligations . A $58 dollar ticket would jump to $97 in price!

And so, we must turn to those who believe that Sacramento Opera is an important asset and key component of the region’s cultural landscape… like you . I hope you will play an active role in helping us close the gap and ensure that our revenue keeps pace with production costs by making a donation . If you are already a donor, an increase in your annual gift of just 10% can make all the difference in our ability to continue to bring forth productions that entertain and captivate our audiences . A Partner-in-Performance envelope may be found in this program booklet . You may leave your gift at the information desk in the lobby, or mail it to the Sacramento Opera office .

Thank you for being a part of Sacramento Opera’s 2009-2010 Season . Here’s to another captivating year!

Sincerely yours,

Michael E. Chase President, Board of Directors

Setting: Napa Valley, mid 1940s

ACT I: Adina, wealthy owner of a local vineyard, her friend Giannetta and a group of

workers are resting in the town square . At a distance Nemorino, a young villager, la-

ments he has nothing to offer Adina but love . The people urge their mistress to read

them a story — how Tristan won the heart of Isolde by drinking a magic love potion .

No sooner has Adina done so than Sgt . Belcore swaggers in with his troop . The sol-

dier's conceit amuses her, but he is not dissuaded from asking her hand in marriage .

Saying she will think it over, she orders refreshments for his comrades . When Adina

and Nemorino are left alone, he awkwardly declares his love . She tells him his time

would be better spent looking after his ailing uncle than mooning over her, for she is

fickle as a breeze .

The people hail the traveling salesman Dr . Dulcamara, who proclaims the

virtues of his medicine . Since it is inexpensive, everyone buys eagerly . When they

have gone, Nemorino asks Dulcamara if he sells the elixir of love described in

Adina's book . Pulling out a bottle of Merlot, the charlatan declares this is the

very draught . Though it costs him his last cent, Nemorino buys the "elixir" and

hastily drinks it . Adina enters to find him tipsy; certain of winning her love, he

pretends indifference . To punish him, Adina flirts with Belcore, who, informed

that he must return to his base, persuades her to marry him at once . Horrified,

Nemorino begs Adina to wait one more day, but she ignores him and invites the

entire village to her wedding feast . Nemorino rushes away, moaning that he has

been ruined by Dulcamara's elixir .

The Elixir of Love Synopsis

14

Page 15: Sacramento Opera Elixir of Love Playbill 2009

ACT II: While the pre-wedding supper is in progress . Dulcamara, self-appointed mas-

ter of ceremonies, sits with the bridal couple . Adina's mind is distracted by the doc-

tor, who suggests they blend their voices in a barcarole about a gondoliera and her

wealthy suitor . When the duet ends, Adina goes off with Belcore to sign the marriage

contract; the guests disperse . Remaining behind, Dulcamara is joined by Nemorino,

who begs for another bottle of elixir; his pleas are rejected, because he has no money .

Belcore returns, annoyed that Adina has postponed the wedding until nightfall; he

spies Nemorino and asks why he is so sad . The youth explains his financial plight,

whereupon the sergeant persuades him to join the army and receive a bonus awaiting

all volunteers . Belcore leads the perplexed Nemorino off to sign him up, enabling him

to buy more elixir .

Giannetta tells her friends that Nemorino's uncle has died and willed him a fortune .

When the youth reels in, giddy from a second bottle of wine, they besiege him with at-

tention; unaware of his new wealth, he believes the elixir finally has taken effect . Adina

and Dulcamara arrive in time to see him leave with a bevy of beauties, and she, angry

that he has sold his freedom to Belcore, grows doubly furious . Hoping to sell Adina a

bottle of elixir, Dulcamara claims that Nemorino's popularity is due to the magic po-

tion . Adina replies she will win him back through her own charms . Reentering alone

in a pensive mood, Nemorino takes heart because of a tear he has seen on Adina's

cheek, but when she appears, he acts disinterested . She confesses she bought back

his enlistment papers because she loves him .

Back in the square, Belcore marches in to find Adina engaged to Nemorino; declaring

that thousands of women await him, he accepts the situation philosophically . At-

tributing Nemorino's happiness and inheritance to the elixir, Dulcamara quickly sells

more bottles before making his escape .

The Sacramento Opera production of The Elixir of Love is lovingly dedicated to the memory of long-time volunteer and generous supporter, Lt. Col. Frederick W. Shadle, for service above and beyond the call of duty. For many years, he meticulously recorded the Sacramento Opera productions, casts, stage directors and conductors, and facilitated every rehearsal of the company until he “retired” a couple of years ago. He will be sorely missed.
