SACRAMENTO CHAPTER OF THE LINKS, INCORPORATED
A BRIEF HISTORY
The Links, Incorporated is a volunteer service organization of accomplished African-American
women linked in friendship and service that positively impacts outcomes affecting the quality
of life in our communities and the world. In March 1952, Link Loraine Rickmond, Western Area
Director, installed 15 charter members into the Sacramento Chapter, of The Links Incorporated.
It was the fourth chapter established in the Western Area. Marjorie Patterson organized the
chapter and served as its first president.
Since then, more than 60 active and alumnae members have persistently provided advocacy,
programs, financial contributions and life changing services to the community through our five
program facets: The Arts, Services to Youth, International Trends and Services, National Trends
and Services and Health & Human Services.
Our most recent and current programs include: The Parkway Elementary School Program,
Partnership with University of California, Davis (UCD) Healthy Heart Program, Co-sponsor of
Quilts Across America featuring Faith Ringgold, a Community Health Faire Co-sponsored with
Kaiser Permanente which included free health screenings and information on preventive health
care and a Distinguished Author Series featuring Hill Harper and Jeff Johnson.
Among our memorable programs from the past are: Project Lead High Expectations, Tutoring
Programs, Read Across America, Haitian Medical Supplies Project, African Water Wells
Program, Walk-A-Thons, Shoe Box Projects, Eyeglasses Project, Sleep Well Tonight Project,
PAPS (Professionals Analyzing Pap Smears), Art Gift to Crocker Museum, Commissioned Art Gift
to Project Hope, Art and Artists Showcases featuring Ernie Barnes, Charles Bibbs, Four
Baritones and local artists.
Current and past programs that we have implemented for over twenty (20) years are: Annual
Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon, Achievers Program, Oak Park Little League Program and
Scholarship Programs which provided thousands of dollars to a diverse group of young people
for them to use as they pursue their educational endeavors. Due to the success of these
programs, they have become our Signature Programs.
In 2018, our chapter will be celebrating 63 years of service and contributions to the Sacramento
communities and the world. We look back with pride on our accomplishments, partnerships,
collaborations and contributions. We look forward with hope, courage and vision to even
greater accomplishments in the future. As we revere our “Proud Past” we look forward to a
“Promising Future” believing that we are “Leading.

HISTORY OF THE ACHIEVERS PROGRAM
In 1982, the Angel City Chapter of The Links, Incorporated established an Achievers Program
with the idea of building a cadre of young men with strong values and dedication to excellence.
The program’s goal was to maintain and strengthen the Black family. In 1989, the Sacramento
Chapter started its Achievers Program.
This Achievers Program is open to African American male high school seniors and college
freshmen who have demonstrated dedication to excellence in academic and community
activities. Students meeting these criteria are recommended by school counselors, community
leaders or Links members. This year’s six-month Achievers Program consists of motivational
workshops, community service opportunities, a mentorship program, entrepreneur
experiences and cultural events that culminate with the “Achiever: Affair of Honor” on
Saturday, April 14, 2018. At this event, the accomplishments of Achievers are highlighted with
scholarship, entrepreneurial and academic award presentations. Throughout all the activities,
a commitment to service and personal involvement is fostered.
On the afternoon of the Achiever culminating event,, individual Achievers are presented and
their accomplishments are described. Scholarships and awards are announced and may be from
one or all five of the following areas: academic, entrepreneurial, community service and spirit.
The academic scholarship is based solely on scholarly achievements. Entrepreneurial awards
are based on the selling of advertisements for the souvenir program book. Prior to the
awarding of scholarships and awards, Achievers perform a choreographed dance routine with
their mothers and stomp routine with their fathers, followed by a contemporary celebratory
routine by the young men. The Achievers Oath is also administered to Achievers’ for them to
show their commitment to a life of excellence. The Achievers Program is but one way the
Sacramento Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has chosen to highlight positive young men in
the African American community and to dedicate itself to the betterment of the Black family.
As times change, we have come to realize that it is important to mentor and acknowledge our
young people’s achievements prior to the end of the high school career. Therefore, in addition
to celebrating our Achievers, the culminating event will honor and recognize the many youth
that have participated in the various activities coordinated by the Sacramento Chapter of the
Links, Inc.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community service is one of the pillars upon which The Links, Inc. as an organization is
founded. Community service is defined as “a person or a group of people performing a non-
paying activity that is for the benefit of the public or its institutions.”
The Sacramento Chapter of the Links, Inc. will identify a selected project that will involve the
collective effort of each of the Achievers. We firmly believe that through this group effort of the
Achievers doing the same service and learning at the same time you will learn how to be
effective and, more importantly, how to be effective about what is important to you.
This group effort will also leave a more lasting impression on the community we serve. It takes
small steps to create big change and the Achievers collective will be a change agent for the
greater Sacramento community.
Homelessness and inability to afford suitable housing is one of the greatest epidemics facing the
nation and the Sacramento area is unfortunately no exception. The Sacramento Chapter of the
Links Community Service project is focused on homeless. The Community Service Project will
be focused on serving at the Winter Sanctuary at an area churh during the winter months.
For greater detail about community service the contact person is:
Bertha King
(916) 427-2360
If an Achiever is unable to participate in the Links sponsored Community Service Project he will
need to complete 20 hours of community service with a single community based organization.
The proposed project must be approved by Community Service Chair Bertha King.

SLIDE PRESENTATION
The slide presentation is an integral part of The Annual Achiever, “An Affair of Honor”. Two
(2) slides will be devoted to each Achiever as he is presented. One slide will be a collage of four
(4) photographs that depict the Achiever from early childhood to the present. The second slide
will be the formal photo of the Achiever in his tuxedo, which is provided by Portrait by Bill
Smith Photography.
Please adhere to the following guidelines to make sure that you are able to meet the
demands required for us to prepare the slide presentation:
Each Achiever is required to submit four (4) photographs. It is preferred that you
download and email the photographs to [email protected] no later than Sunday,
January 21, 2018. You may also submit the photos at the Parent Mixer or by mail to:
Janine Bera
c/o Achiever Slide Show
P.O. Box 221081
Sacramento, CA 95822
Please select your photographs carefully. The slide presentation highlights the
Achievers only. Photographs with groups of more than two (2) people will not be used
in order to ensure the Achievers’ face is captured in the collage. Very large pictures
sometimes require reduction for use; therefore smaller pictures are more readily
useable. But, please do not select pictures that are too small because they also require
special handling. The graphic artist makes the final decision on which photographs to
use in the slide presentation.
If you submit hard copy photographs, please make certain that each photograph is
properly identified on the reverse side (back of the picture) and placed in an envelope
with the Achievers’ complete name and phone number on the front of the envelope.
Proper identification ensures that these precious photographs are not misplaced and are
returned to the correct Achievers.
The slide presentation adds a special warmth, bond and familiar feeling to the formal
presentation of the Achievers. It gives the Achievers the opportunity to look back and reflect on
childhood memories while families and guests capture a moment of nostalgia, progression and
can follow the Achievers’ path of growth and achievements.

ACHIEVERS SOUVENIR PROGRAM BOOK
The 30th Annual Achievers Program Souvenir Program Book is produced to showcase
Achievers, their biographies, pictures and well wishes from family, friends and community
supporters. Each Achiever’s family will receive 5 copies of the Souvenir Program Book. Each
couple and each individual attending the Achiever will receive one souvenir book.
FAMILY PAGE One section of the souvenir program book focuses on each Achievers. This section features a
full-page photograph of each Achiever. Opposite Achievers’ photograph is the “Family Page,”
which is reserved for family members to offer their congratulations as well as express any other
reflections on the occasion they may wish to share. A brief Achievers biography, highlighting
their achievements, appears at the top of the “Family Page.” Typically, this includes the name of
the Achievers current school, scholastic achievements, honors received, club honors, church
affiliation and future goals. The Achievers Application completed to secure participation in the
program will used to write this section. It is important that Achievers provide any updates to
the information provided in the Achiever Application information that they want included in
their profile no later than Sunday, January 21, 2018.
PHOTOGRAPHS The Achievers’ professional photograph and "Family Page" are included in the Achievers
Participation fees. We have arranged for Achiever photographs taken by Bill Smith
Photographers, Sunday, November 19, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (prior to
your workshop). A sign-up for appointments will be available at the October 29, 2017
workshop. Achievers can select a proof immediately following their photo session. Please plan
to have your photograph taken by Bill Smith Photography between November 19 and
December 9, 2017. All selection must be made prior to the December 16, 2017 deadline.
The photographer will select the Achievers portrait if one has not been chosen by the
deadline. This official Achievers’ photograph will be used during the Achiever Program Event

FAMILY PAGE
The Family Page has two parts 1) The Achievers Biographical Sketch (Bio Sketch) and 2) the
Family Message. Each section must be no more than 250 words. If these guidelines are not
adhered to the information will either be returned or edited to the requested limited.
The Achievers Biographical Sketch appears at the top of the page. It should be a brief
narrative; it may not contain all the details read during the presentation on the night of the
Achiever. The template below may help you gather your thoughts.
1. Achievers Biographical Sketch Template
“(Achiever’s name) is a senior at x x x x x x x School.” Next, include one or two sentences about
his major school interests, activities, and/or awards. These sentences should summarize the
Achiever’s high school years, not list details from each year. Then, add one or two sentences
about any other activities, interests, honors, etc., outside of school (church, community service,
etc.) The very last one or two sentences should mention his future plans: the college he plans to
attend, his major, his future career; or the branch of military he is joining.
2. Parent Message
The parents’ message appears at the bottom of the page and should reflect your sentiments
about the Achievers and the night. Messages here typically come from parents, together or each
parent separately, and siblings. Please pay attention to the space allocated to the family
message, especially if there is a separate message from each parent in addition to one from
brothers or sisters. Everything must fit in a limited space. Messages from other family
members, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., should be placed on other advertisements
that will follow the family page. The family message is also limited to 250 words.
Please review the family pages in last year’s souvenir book for examples. Members of the
Souvenir Journal Committee are available to proof, edit or provide other assistance if needed.
The above listed information must be submitted by Sunday, January 21, 2018. It may be
submitted in person at the Parent Reception, however, you are highly encouraged to submit this
information in electronic format to:
