MESSAGE FROM FR. ROBERT
March 8, 2020 First Sunday in Lent
Dear Friends, How has your Lent been going? I hope that all of your efforts to increase prayer, to engage in the desired fasting and abstinence, and to give alms to the poor have been going well. Things at the Parish have been excellent — I have seen signs of beautiful growth. For instance, we have started a Monday — Friday Mass at 6:30 am in the Church. As of this writing, we have been averaging more than 12 people each day start-ing their day off with the Lord. Won’t you come join us? There have been increased people receiving the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation since we began offering Confes-sions on Saturdays 1-2 pm, 4:30-5 pm and Monday from 7-7:30 pm. Won’t you come join us? There were around 50 people at last Friday’s Stations of the Cross and 31 people at this past Monday’s Rosary. Won’t you come join us? Check out all that Guardian Angel has to offer you this Lent, by going to our website, www.GuardianAngelChurch.org, consulting the purple insert in each week’s bulletin, or liking our Facebook page. Don’t let this Lent slip by!
This weekend we will have the Pledge Weekend for the Annual Appeal. You remember that we showed the video from the Archdiocese and that I spoke at each of the Masses on one weekend in January. Let me remind you of two points I made at that time: 1. The Annual Appeal goes to fund the Corporal and
Spiritual Works of Mercy in the Archdiocese of Newark (see the box to the right)! The monies col-lected go to serve real people in our Diocese who are in material and spiritual need. Jesus reminds us to “be merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful.”
2. Piggybacking on that point, I said that it is not about the amount of money each person or family gives to-wards this campaign — what is important is that each and every person in our Parish is concerned about and desires to be a part of these works of mercy. What would truly warm my heart and bring me to tears would be if we had 100% of our families contributing something to this campaign, showing that our Parish is truly concerned about others in need.
In each pew are pencils and pledge envelopes. Please consider making your pledge now and place it in the collection basket today. If you need more time, please take an envelope home with you (and if you need another brochure take one from the table in the vestibule), and please prayerfully consider giving to this campaign. You can drop them in the basket next week. I know that this Parish is very generous and already gives abundantly to the Church and other worthy causes. No question about that! I also know that God is never outdone in generosity. Please consider helping the Church of Newark serve people in need through the Annual Appeal. Thank you!
Fr. Robert

STEWARDSHIP
“Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.” G 12:1
God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live. Remember what St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “God does not call us to be successful, God calls us to be faithful.”
During Lent, we prepare ourselves through prayer and giving back to our parish. But, with busy lives and active fami-lies, it's easy to skip a weekly tithe when you are unable to attend Mass or are out of town. This Lent, I want to invite you in joining me and many oth-ers at Guardian Angel in setting up recurring eGiving though Faith Direct. Thanks to eGiving, your weekly offertory will be automatically taken care of, which saves you time and saves our parish money by eliminating all those unused offertory en-velopes. Getting started is easy! Visit faith.direct/NJ513. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family.
Fr. Robert
The March 1st collection was $8,367 with $5,138 from the collection basket and $3,229 from Faith Direct.
Thank you for your generous contribution to the parish.

RCIA
This past weekend our adult candidate, Timothy Harvey, was recognized and called by name at the RITE OF CALLING CANDIDATES TO CONTINUING CONVERSION celebration. This ceremony was held on Saturday, February 29th at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where candidates from parishes throughout the Archdiocese are presented to the Most Reverend John W. Flesey, who on behalf of the Church, recognizes their desire to complete their Chris-tian initiation and calls them to continued conversion. Timothy’s sponsor (Jacqueline Sparaco, pictured) and our RCIA team accompanied Timothy to this special cer-emony. Timothy is preparing to be received into the Catholic Church and receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation during the Easter season. Please re-member him in your prayers as he continues his journey of faith with us at Guardian Angel.

CHANGE
Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is trans-figured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfig-ured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
