September 23, 2018 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Message from the Pastor

Dear parishioners, Summer officially ends this week as we move into

the season of autumn. With the ending of summer, I’d like to welcome back those who have been away traveling or “down the shore” – and offer a special word of wel-come to all the new families who have been joining our parish during the summer months and into September!

As we welcome, we also say farewell. On September 30th, Father Patrick Obeleagu completes his summer term assisting at our parish. We are grateful for his faithful service here, and wish him well as he returns to Poland to continue with his advanced studies in theology. In Octo-ber, we resume having occasional weekend help from the Salesian priests of Don Bosco High School.

* The end of summer is also a great time to gather

socially! This weekend please stay a little while after Mass and enjoy some “al fresco” refreshments on our church plaza (blessed one year ago!). And next week please join us for our free parish picnic! It will be Sunday September 30th starting at 12:30 p.m. We provide the grilled food and water – you’re invited to bring a dessert or salad to share. The “egg toss” competition is always a lot of laughs – and this year the prize is doubled! Each member of the winning duo will win $200, courtesy of Guy’s Maintenance Inc.

* Last weekend was truly wonderful – 20 of our Con-

firmation candidates joined our peer ministry team, adult chaperone team, Youth Minister Alex Capicchioni (and me!) on a weekend-long retreat at the Salesian retreat center in Stony Point, NY. I wish you could have heard the witnessing several of the youth did at the retreat clos-ing Mass. They shared about how an initial reluctance to go on retreat (THANK YOU to all the Moms and Dads who push their kids and teens when they need to!) gave way to an awakened faith – one that went deeper and brought real joy. Please pray for all our candidates as they begin a season of classes, and for their families to be renewed in faith as well.

* Thank you to everyone who attended our recent

“open forum” evening – a chance to discuss our thoughts and feelings regarding the summer news about church abuse scandals. Our time of prayer and discussion truly allowed us to come together before God and one another to pour out our hearts, and to support and encourage one another in faith.

This page of the bulletin also includes a statement recently issued by our Archbishop, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, regarding the uses of funds raised through archdiocesan appeals.

In Christ,

Archdiocese of Newark O F F I C E O F T H E A R C H B I S H O P

Statement of Accountability

The Archdiocese of Newark must respond to the faithful’s need for increased transparency, careful stewardship, and accountability for their contribu-tions of the mission of the Church. This Statement of Accountability represents an important step in our ongoing efforts to heal the Body of Christ. This Archdiocese hereby restates its commitment to the faithful of this local Church:

1. To work tirelessly, with the support of God’s people and in cooperation with civil authorities, to protect all those entrusted to our care, most especially the young and vulnerable, from all forms of abuse, by continuing our efforts to create safe and respectful environments for all.

2. To use funds from the Annual Appeal or We Are

Living Stones Capital Campaign solely for the purposes originally intended - to proclaim the Good News, pass on the faith to the next genera-tion, and care for the poor and marginalized - and not for any other purpose. Information regarding these campaigns may be obtained on our website,www.rcan.org.

3. To inform and communicate regularly with the

faithful on how these funds are used to serve the needs of God’s people throughout the Archdio-cese of Newark.

I invoke the maternal protection and intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. May Christ, our Redeemer, lead us to greater unity in faith, hope, and charity.

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark

FALL BIBLE STUDY

The parish BMW (Be My Witness) Core Group is inviting you to join our parish “Bible Study” using Jeff Cavin’s program “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible.”

For Christians the “Bible” account of the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some 2,000 years after the time of Jesus His life and ministry remain rele-vant even in our contemporary world. You do not need to be an expert of the bible to join a bible study. Even if you have not read the bible at all the more we encourage you to attend. Since the Bible is God’s Word, studying it is a way to know God better. Our bible study starts Wednesday, September 26, There are 2 classes: Wednesday 10am - 11:30am and Wednesday 7:30PM – 9:00PM at the Rectory

The Religious Education office is steadily preparing for the upcom-ing school year. If you have not registered yet, please contact the Religious Education office at [email protected] ASAP. Classes will begin on October 2nd. The children in grades 1 through 5 will meet in the church at 3:30 for a Prayer Service be-fore being escorted to their classes by their catechists. 6th, 7th & 8th graders will meet in the auditorium on October 2nd from 7:30 until 8:30. Beginning October 16th the 6th grade students will meet in each other’s homes while the 7th graders will meet in the barn and & 8th graders will meet in the auditorium. Families who plan to home school their children this year who have not picked up their books, should do so this week. Once again this year we have High School students as catechists for our Tuesday afternoon program. This has turned out to be a very effective program for everyone involved. The little ones really look up to the older students, and the older students have an opportunity to reinforce their own beliefs and spirituality while sharing them with the younger members of our parish. And as a bonus, it looks great on a college resume!!! We are always looking for more volunteers. Consider being a substitute or a classroom aid. We provide all the materials and training that you need. The only requirements are a love of your faith and for adults, attend-ance at a Protecting God’s Children workshop. We still need helpers for a few grades. Please consider helping out. You do not need to have a child in the program to help out! As of now Children’s Church is scheduled to begin in November, but we are in need of volunteers for this awesome program. You may want to consider joining a Children’s Church team this year. Any adult can join!!! Adults with babies who want early practice Adults with children who can’t get enough Adults with teenagers who want to relive the sweet days Adults with empty nests who want to fill the void Adults with grandkids who want to stay on top of their game Unofficial adults…. Confirmed high school or college students You can help our K - 3rd Graders hear and understand God’s Word during Mass. It is a simple but rewarding ministry… no theological degree required!! You get the readings weeks in advance so you may prepare a lesson around them. No crayons, no glue, it’s a very neat and clean event! Remember, before you get all bogged down in school year activi-ties, to carve some time out each weekend to attend Mass with your family. I promise you will not regret it. It can be the best hour of your week if you open your heart and let the Spirit in! If your child attended our Summer Angel Wings program, you should have received an e mail schedule of events during the school year. You can sign your child up for these events at any time. Please let us know which events you plan to attend with your children. If you choose now, and put them on the calendar you can work around the dates as other activities come up during the school year. You will have the added bonus of us not bugging you all year! The Catholic High School Admissions Co-op exam will be adminis-tered on Friday November 9th. The deadline for on line registration for the exam is October 25th. If any eighth grade students are con-sidering attending a Catholic High School, you may go to the web-site www.njcoopexam.org for information or contact the Religious Education Office. I look forward to seeing and hearing from you in the coming months.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Confirmation families,

The first official youth group meeting will be on Wednesday the 26th of September at 730pm in the Red Barn. All high school teens interested in their faith are welcome to attend! Attendance to at least two youth group meetings is mandatory for confirmation candi-dates. On the 30th of September is the Parish picnic; we will need 7-8 teen helpers. This is an opportunity for individ-ual service hours. The first Small Group CCD session for the Fall semester will be held on October 2nd and run by Barbara and/or Bill Konvit in my place. It will run as if I were there, but I will be in Europe from the 29th of September to the 5th of October! Youth Group will either be cancelled or rescheduled on the 3rd of October. The parish is looking for teens who like to bake for the AID Ministry Bake Sale during Allendale Day on the 6th of October. The Guardian Angel tent should be in front of TD Bank, so please let me know. This could count toward confirmation service hours as well. On the 7th of October is the first Sponsor Retreat option, it runs from 8:30 AM through 11:30 AM Youth Mass, followed by an optional lunch with food from Italian Riviera, so plan in advance with your sponsors!

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” (M 9:35)

Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
