Many may not know it, but the first climbersto ascend Mount Kinabalu in 1851 came

from Kiau Village.

Sadib Miki, a local Dusun from Kiau Villagewho came with me on several jungle trekkingtours in Long Pasia from 1990 to 1998 invitedme to his land; a primary jungle at the foothill ofMount Kinabalu called Mohan Tuhan.

In the olden days, horses trekked from thecoastal Kota Belud through to Tambatuan,Kaung and the Lobong Lobong villages to get toKiau Village. The villagers called this the BritishRoute. Today, there is a walking tour from KiauVillage through this trail going to Kaung then onto Tambatuan Village.

While exploring this trail, Sadib Miki showedme the types of edible fruits and traditionalmedicinal plants as well as how to make animaltraps. His immense knowledge in these thingsthen inspired me to help him set up a campsiteon his land named after his ancestor Miki. Andso, that is how Miki Survival Camp came about.

It takes less than 2 hours to walk throughthe hilly farmland, into the primary forest ofMohan Tuhan and across several mountainstreams to reach Miki Survival Camp fromSadib Miki's house in Kiau Village. There isbasic accommodation in the jungle huts or ifyou prefer, you could build a shelter yourselvesfor your overnight stay.

Sadib Miki and his jungle crew will take youon an educational walk through the jungle, showing you some of the edible fruits and tradi-tional medicinal plants and also teach you howto make animal traps.

They will also teach you some jungle sur-vival skills, like how to make fire and how to boilwater and cook rice with bamboo containers. You’ll be learning how to build your shelter andmaybe animal and fish traps using things youfind on the jungle floor. All these and other skills

that have been passed down from their ances-tors have been transformed into jungle educa-tion for Miki Survival Camp visitors.

Today, several hundreds of visitors includingstudents from the UK and other Europeancountries have stayed at Miki Survival Camp fora minimum of 2 nights, learning Bornean junglesurvival. Honeymooners too have enjoyed stay-ing at Miki Survival Camp, thanks to a uniquepackage by a UK travel agent. A trip to MikiSurvival Camp is truly a unique experiencefound nowhere else in the world!

Adventure AwaitsFrom the rugged granite peaks of Mount

Kinabalu, down to the rolling hills that sur-round it, to the verdant jungles where rare

and endangered species roam to the magical bluewaters, Sabah is truly blessed with an abundanceof treasures from mountain high to ocean deep. Itis no secret that The Land Below the Wind iswhere adventure awaits you..

Conquer the Peak of Borneo Whether for its splendorous beauty or for the chal-lenge of a climb, Mount Kinabalu is tirelessly andproudly recommended to visitors. This mountain, standing at a towering 4095 metres, is located inMalaysia’s first World Heritage Site and is the highestaccessible mountain in Southeast Asia. Dailyclimbers conquer the mountain in 2 days while hard-ened athletes who run up and down the mountain inthe annual Mount Kinabalu International Climbathonclock-in at about three hours on the same touristroute. More recently, the Via Ferrata opened routesthat used to be accessible only to rock climbers forconquerors hungry for a different experience. Whilethere are many trails already explored by the adven-turous, there are many other undiscovered routeswaiting to feel the footsteps of explorers upon them.

Trek the TrailsLace up those hiking boots for a trek through themystifying jungles of north Borneo. After beingidentified as a gold mine to some of Mother Nature’sbest treasures, vast areas of Sabah’s rainforests areprotected for crucial preservation. Among these areasis Danum Valley, situated in the south-easterly regionof Sabah, known the world over for containing someof Asia’s last remaining primary rainforests andconsequently home to some of the world’s rarestwildlife such as the Borneo Pygmy Elephant and theSumatran Rhino. A demanding 8-day trek fromDanum Valley will take you into Maliau Basin, the“Lost World” of Borneo within the enclosure ofmile-high cliffs. As you breathe in the thick greenscent of the rainforest on your hike, peer carefullythrough the trees and listen intently to yoursurroundings, for you may very well cross paths withsome of Borneo’s rare and wonderful wildlife.

Two-wheel Deals Employ the aid of a mountain bike if you’re looking fora little more speed and a whole lot more challengethrough Sabah’s landscapes. 300 to 400 visitors tra-verse the Land Below the Wind on two wheels annu-ally, taking on a rewarding journey like no other.Various cycling tour packages lasting anythingbetween two and ten days, take cyclists through vil-lages where they can stop and meet the Bajaunatives of Kota Belud or the Rungus of Kudat. Somechoose to take a journey through the historicalSandakan Death March route, while others search forthe up and downhill terrains of Kundasang for a phys-ically testing expedition. Certainly opt for a cyclingadventure for a journey close to nature.

Shoot Through the RapidsGet ready for a thrilling ride through the raging Padas River. Experiencethe ultimate rush of adrenaline as the fast flowing waters pitch your raftat an exciting speed downriver through rapids with names like theHeadhunter, the Adrenaline Flow and the Merry Go Round. To get to thisriver is an adventure in itself – part of your journey there involves hop-ping on a train that has been in service for almost a century and riding itthrough the south-eastern countryside of Sabah. For mild adventureseekers, there is the gentler excitement of the clear-waters of Kiulu witha scenic bonus.

Caving CapersAbout 10 kilometres from Sukau are the famous Gomantong Caves.Simud Hitam and Simud Putih are the two pitch-black crevices accom-modating an ecosystem of bugs, bat and swiftlets. The swiftlets providethe expensive commodity of birds’ nests – constructed with the saliva ofthe small birds that make a health delicacy worth thousands of Ringgit bythe kilogramme. Brave experts climb up flimsy bamboo and rattan lad-ders that reach up to the roof of the cave to collect the valuable birds’nests, risking their lives with every minute spent far from the solid groundbelow. Make your way past this activity through to a dark maze of tunnels

and caverns and find your way to the opening of Simud Putih by eveningfor a hair-raising show. When the sun begins to set, millions of bats takeflight from their dark refuge into the open, blackening the open skies. Youmay well catch sight of serpent eagles and kites swooping down on thesebats to catch their dinner.

Dive the Deep BlueBeneath the sapphire waters that surround Sabah lie underwater thrillsfor scuba divers. It’s time to squeeze into your scuba suit and get readyto swim alongside an unbelievable array of sea life. Kapalai, Mabul andMataking are among the stars of dive sites, as is the north-easternLankayan Island and the north-western island of Layang Layang. Thenthere is Sipadan Island, arguably the best dive site on earth, the home tocountless species of sharks, thousands of barracudas, hundreds ofgreen and hawksbill turtles as well as coral reefs rivalling the GreatBarrier Reef. It’s no wonder that many have attested that any other divesite in the world pales in comparison to the colourful waters of Sipadan.

The Origins of theUnduk Ngadau

The Unduk Ngadau or Harvest Queen originatesfrom the beginnings of the Kadazan tribe, whenthe god Kinoingan sacrificed his only daughter

for a good harvest. There are many versions to the legend, one of which goes like this:

One day, Kinoingan started a farm, but after plough-ing he realised that he had no seeds to plant. So he setoff in search of some seeds with his valuable brass gongwhich he carried everywhere on his shoulder. On his way,he met birds and animals, and asked them if they had anyseeds, to which they replied that they did not have anyyet, having just been created by him. Even thoughKinoingan knew that they had none, he nevertheless pur-posely asked this question to make them all realise thatthey would have to work hard for their livelihood.

Because there were no seeds in the world then,Kinoingan resourced to sacrificing his only, beautiful andobedient daughter so that all his people would haveseeds to grow food they needed. Her head gave rise tococonuts, her flesh became padi, her blood (the mostprecious part) red rice, her fingers ginger, her teethmaize, her knees yams and other parts of her body manymore edible plants.

Today, Huminodun is honoured every year atSabah’s Harvest Festival. The Unduk Ngadau orHarvest Queen is a tribute to Kinoigan’s beloveddaughter who brought the yield in ancient times. TheUnduk Ngadau resembles the revered Huminodunnot only in the beauty she possesses but in all thequalities and virtues that she is selected for.

Selain sarang burung, Gua Gomantongjuga memiliki banyak tarikan lain.

Pulau Tiga is the largest of three islands that makeup Pulau Tiga Park, which was gazetted as amarine park in 1933. Before it became famous as

the location for the first season of ‘Survivor’, Pulau Tigawas an absorbing spot rarely visited by tourists. With itsrich marine life, the park is ideal for diving andsnorkelling over the reefs.

Pulau Tiga’s low, oblong shape is a result of erup-tions of mud volcanoes over a long period of time.Several mud volcanoes can still be seen at the summit ofthe island. The Park Headquarters is located on PulauTiga; there is an office complex, staff quarters and a resthouse for visiting scientists. Visitors can stay at the PulauTiga Resort (which offers various packages that includeboat transfers, full board meals and escorted trips to theMud Volcano). While you are there, explore the islandthrough a network of trails marked at 50-metre intervals.Accommodation should always be booked in advance toavoid disappointment.

The variety of flora and fauna on the island is simplyastounding.
