SEASONAL GREETING FROM C.E.O

Yorkshire took Gold at the Olympics, the sun stayed out and we

experienced an English monsoon, so what will Autumn/Winter 2012-13

have in store for us all?!

At SAA-uk we are looking forward to sharing and supporting the talents

of young people through our Concert Series ‘GENERATION 21’. These

young people have, over the past 15 years, invested their time, passion and

commitment to becoming the rising stars in the world of Indian Classical

music in the UK.

We kick-start the season with two up and coming sitarists, Jasdeep Singh Degun and Akash Patel to be accompanied by senior musician Bhupinder Singh Chaggar (from GENERATION X!), the concert takes place on

Thursday 27th September (see page 6).

SAA-uk are also delighted to announce that the SAA-uk Music and Dance

Academies are raising the bar for the new academic year. Ustad Surjeet Singh, a specialist in playing Sarangi, will join our dedicated team of Senior

musicians at the SAA-uk Music Academy, to train and develop the talents

of a new generation, whilst the SAA-uk Dance Academy look forward to

settling in to their new home at Northern School of Contemporary Dance,

providing a higher quality opportunity for our dedicated young dancers and

parents.

We join forces with key organisations across Yorkshire to offer a diverse range

of Arts and Cultural activities, starting with the National Heritage Open Day

on the 8th September 2012, Shaheen Khan in Concert at Sheffield University

on 25th September, Light Night in Leeds on the 5th October, Midday Celestial Song on 12th December 2012 and much more….

The Autumn/Winter season is also a busy festival period, with celebrations

including Eid, Diwali, Vijaydashmi, Durga Pooja, Guru Nanak Jayanti,

SAA-uk are delighted to present two rising sitarists Jasdeep Singh Degun from Leeds and Akash Patel from London to mark 15 years of spotting, nurturing, supporting and developing young talent across the UK as SAA-uk plays it’s part in empowering a new generation.

The Sitar is an instrument that has a long association with Leeds and the North of England. The instrument’s profile was first raised by the Beatles through their connection with Pt Ravi Shankar and more recently has become established and part of the UK music scene through the work of Ustad Dharambir MBE in Yorkshire, Roopa Panesar in the Midlands, Mehmoob Nadeem and Anoushka Shankar in the South.

Jasdeep and Akash are the future torchbearers of the sitar in the UK, and during this evening will be accompanied by a highly accomplished senior musician of international stature - our very own Sri Bhupinder Singh Chaggar on tabla.

Time and Indian philosophy proposes a cyclic phenomenon that neither is the beginning nor is at the end. Weather uniting with the beloved of capturing the first beat of the time cycle, the persistence of it brings one closer to the journey of becoming one with the divine.

Through the use of costume, movements, space and music, Amina will incorporate the magic of Kathak through ancient and classical dance vocabulary, adding to it a modern global influence. Incorporating Nritta (pure dance) and Nritya (expression through narrative), the music and dance will take you on a memorable journey, accompanied by an ensemble of highly respected musicians - Debasish Mukherjee, Lucy Rahman and Tarun Jasani.

‘Does everything really begin with one or is it that everything ends with one?’

Once again SAA-uk joins forces with local artists, businesses and communities to bring you Light Night; a spectacular celebration of creativity in Leeds, this time exploring the theme ‘Dead of Night’. There will be a family-friendly Light Night Trail and dozens of other exhibits, installations and displays to be discovered by the adventurous. Bring along family and friends when Leeds comes alive on Friday 5th October!

SAA-uk, along with members of local South Asian community will bring to life Ravana - a 10 headed Demon of Hindu mythology. Some believe the ten heads represent violence and antagonism, whilst others believe they represent knowledge and emotion.

We invite you to take part and learn a few steps of Ras Garba, Dhandiya until it is time to shake it up and party as night descends with some Bhangra moves, as well as indulging in a bit of Henna...

Let’s come together to celebrate the rich Arts and Cultures of Leeds’ diverse communities!

Milun is a band that first came together through the Milun project in 2009-10 through which the four members of the band explored the common themes and unique aspects of both the classical and folk traditions of India and Ireland respectively. They decided to stay together and 2012 see them getting back out to share the music that they created and continue to create.

Milun is a new music expression that captures the haunting sound of the Indian alaap to the pounding energy of Irish reel on the sitar, tabla, bodhran, fiddle and accordian.

Milan-born Modarelli is an extremely versatile guitarist, effortlessly fusing the tradition of European classical guitar with the rich texture of Indian classical rags. Bhupinder Singh Chaggar is an exceptionally musical and dynamic Tabla player based in Leeds, and one of the leading disciples of the renowned Tabla Maestro and Gharanadaar of the Benares gharana, the late Pandit Sharda Sahai Ji.

Together they re-shape a 5,000 year old tradition of Indian Classical Music by taking notes of a rag; intricately manipulating it with skilful improvisation to create contemporary music that is beautifully eclectic, unique and perfectly symbolizes the music of 21st Century Britain

You are invited to a midday concert that promises to touch you deep in the heart through the magic of the bamboo Flute (Bansuri) in the hands of Teymour Housego, accompanied by Upneet Singh on Tabla.

The Bansuri is depicted in Buddhist painting dating back to 100 AD and is an instrument intimately linked to the love story of Lord Krishna and Radha.

It has been said that music played on the bansuri has a spellbinding and enthralling effect the leaves the listener’s mind, body and soul dancing the “Dance of Divine Love” just about what we all need in a year of austerity.

The month of February is one that is associated with love and for thousands of years minstrels from all around the world have sung couplets of poetry and verses that describe ‘Divine Love’ in song. This is the basis of Sufi music which is devotional and inspired by the works of Sufi poets, like Rumi, Hafiz, Bulleh Shah and Khwaja Ghulam Farid. Shahid who is a great admirer of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan hopes to share his love for music and inspire the listeners when he adds a tounch of souls to his repertoire.

Shahid Abbas a young and up and coming vocalist based in London, and a disciple of Ustad Hussain Baksh Gulu. During this evening Shahid along with his fellow musicians looks forward to transporting you, the audience, to the realm of divine love and understanding, with his deep, passionate voice.

The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word katha meaning story. Kathak is a classical dance form, originating from northern India. An amalgamation of both Hindu and Islamic tradition has played a part in the development of unique features in Kathak dance which include; rhythmic compositions, fast footwork, spins, story-telling and lyrically graceful body and hand gestures. At its heart is performance, with live interpretation of the techniques, movement, vocabulary, music and stories that make for a complete experience.
