Our assembly theme had already been planned to pray for and celebrate light overcoming darkness, and Mr Thompson and a group of pupils presented a story centred on Diwali – the festival of lights – in which we heard about how we can be the lightin all of our com- munities by what we do and say. Our sporting successes continue with year 10 football through to the next round in the cup, and, after a successful evening on Wednesday, our year 8 athletics team going forward to represent Southwark for the London champion- ships. The city of Birmingham awaits the arrival of year 10 this morning as they begin to think about future careers whilst at- tending the national employability conference. The pupils at Sacred Heart get many wonderful opportunities to achieve and develop as young people – their teachers work incredibly hard to enable them to access the many schemes and opportunities that exist, and, as we would expect, the pupils respond very positively. On Monday five of our year 13 pupils are presenting to a group of financial experts at the Bank of England in a national competition where they are now competing against the top public schools in the country; our relatively inexperienced debating team have won the chance to debate at the House of Lords; and the first of our group who sat the Oxbridge tests has been invited for interview to read Natural Sciences at Jesus College, Cambridge. And with good offers from Durham, Exeter, Bristol, York, and Nottingham already in, the quality of the young people leaving Sacred Heart is be- ing acknowledged across the country. In England and Wales, the Feast of Christ the King, 22 November, each year is dedicated to welcoming, involv- ing and empowering young Catholics. In his address to young people on Palm Sunday this year, Pope Francis focused on the beatitude Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.(Matthew 5:7). This year the theme for National Youth Sunday combines this Beatitude with the celebration of Christ the King. And so we remember especially in our prayers all of our young people, that they will grow to become lights of faith and hope in our communities and our world. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus We place all of our trust in you. Ms B Boyle Deputy Headteacher

Dear Parents, As a school community we have prayed especially for peace in the world this week. Our assembly theme had already been planned to pray for and celebrate light overcoming darkness, and Mr Thompson and a group of pupils presented a story centred on Diwali – the festival of lights – in which we heard about how we can ‘be the light’ in all of our com-munities by what we do and say. Our sporting successes continue with year 10 football through to the next round in the cup, and, after a successful evening on Wednesday, our year 8 athletics team going forward to represent Southwark for the London champion-ships. The city of Birmingham awaits the arrival of year 10 this morning as they begin to think about future careers whilst at-tending the national employability conference. The external judges were particularly impressed with the level of passion and team work these pupils displayed. The team will be going on to debate at the House of Lords on December 1st so please congratulate them and wish them luck! Debate Mate will continue every Thursday at 3.15pm, pupils are to meet in the 6th form common room. Please see Ms Cawley if you haven't yet signed up as places are now very limited!

CAREERS - British Airways Event On Thursday 12th of November I attended an Aviations event at British Airways Headquarters. It was great to be one of the 280 young people who got an insight into what it was like to be part of BA. The pilot in charge of the event, Andrew, began the presentation by giving us an insight as to the kinds of jobs that are available at BA: cabin crew, engineers, IT technicians, pilots, designers and more. He then invited up two first year apprentices who spoke to us about the advantages of taking up the BA apprenticeship scheme. The first apprentice spoke to us about the benefits the scheme had brought her and the fact that she enjoyed learning on the job. She also mentioned that her job sometimes required her to travel quite a bit and she had the opportunity to go to Belarus for free. The second apprentice spoke about how much he enjoyed being on the scheme as it gave him the oppor-tunity to know what happens in the background and be a part of the crew that made the flights possible; he worked in the technical areas mainly dealing with computer systems and IT. After a few more speakers who spoke in depth about the apprenticeships - as well as a volunteer from the audience participating in acting out the safety instructions with the cabin crew - we were given the oppor-tunity to speak to members of BA and people in other aviation industries. Through this, I learnt that one could become an air hostess for less than 6 months if they felt like it and that there wasn't a contract. Also, I met a female pilot. She happened to be the only female pilot there and she was extremely inspirational. Everything about her screamed accomplished; from her posture, to the pride her voice held when she spoke about flying. She told me that 15% of the airforce at London City Airport - where she works - are women and demand for women was, and still is, increasing rapidly. Overall the day was great, and a real ‘eye opener’ about how diverse aviation as an industry is. Nadege Anotchi Year 12

reason during exam periods. Medical or dental appointments must be avoided,
