South Africa has a vibrant film and television industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie or shoot a TV show here than in Europe or the US.

South African films and television productions have attained substantial global recognition including an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominated films like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at international festivals including IDFA and HotDocs.

Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture; Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus.

Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercial and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.

One Man and His Dog FilmsBANTU NIGHTINGALES:

I am the daughter of a nurse. When I was growing up, nursing was a noble profession that many young, black women aspired to mostly

because it was one of the few options for becoming a professional in South Africa. Nursing is such an essential service that it is universally accepted that we should all have access to it, as a basic human right. There are currently much fewer people who are joining the profession of nursing, whether female or male, because it is generally underpaid, coupled with bad working conditions, and nursing no longer holds the aspirational status it did when I was growing up. Developed countries are poaching nurses from developing countries at an alarming rate. If this continues without urgent intervention, nursing is likely to become accessible only for the rich. By exploring the rich history of black nurses in South Africa, the film will follow three

current South African nurses, who are in great demand around the world, and who make three very different choices.

THE BEAUTIFUL EXCHANGE:

This is the thrilling story of two political opponents. As a flawed ideology rips their country apart, one is driven to a fatal conclusion; he must assassinate

his opponent. When this fails, and a new order restores peace, he is left with a troubled conscience. Then, his wife’s shock suicide jolts him into reconciling his past.

In 2006, Adriaan Vlok, overseer of countless atrocities and deaths as Minister of Law and Order, felt called by God to meet with Frank Chikane, a man he had tried to kill during the bitter years of apartheid. Frank, who had endured torture, oppression and various assassination attempts on his life, reluctantly agreed.

Set against the changing tides of South African politics and race relations, A Beautful Exchange, a political Chariots of Fire, is the true story of two extraordinary men, driven by a fervent belief, who showed the world the true and ultimate power of forgiveness.

MYA Productions Pty LtdDITURUPA:

Diturupa excavates the plight of black South African soldiers known as the South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC) during World

War One.The story unfolds through a tapestry of

captivating journeys of some of the surviving descendants of the soldiers. One is Monwabisi Jamangile, the General Chaplin in the South African National Defense Forces who brings home the remains of his great-grandfather, a military veteran whose legendary great-grandfather uttered some of the most poignant words in military history during the infamous sinking of the SS Mendi, and Kevin Ashton, a great-grandson to one of the handful of white solders who survived the sinking of the Mendi which went down with over six hundred black solders.

The tales of these characters interweave with Diturupa Festival, an electric and colorful annual Scottish tradition that takes place in

Makapanstad village, a peri-urban hamlet outside the city of Pretoria in South Africa

This sentimental tradition has survived in the community for over a hundred years after being brought home by surviving SANLC members.

Through the prism of the festival, the film transports us to the gory and deadly battle of Europe know as Delville Wood.

CHILD OF THE REVOLUTION:

X oliswa Sithole and her family escaped apartheid South Africa in 1968 as a child and grew up amidst the freedom fighters of

Zimbabwe, witnessing the euphoria, the good and the bad of a revolution. She was then raised as a Zimbabwean and became a product of that country. Leaving in 1999 before the country descended into chaos presents challenges when she returns to Zimbabwe in 2005.

Child of The Revolution, eight years in the making, not only depicts Zimbabwe’s painful transition to self rule from British rule, but is also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit that holistically tries to explore the challenges that countries face, especially African countries on their journey to self rule.

Now, in this powerful, moving documentary, the two time BAFTA and Peabody winner returns to Zimbabwe

to relive her story and investigate what happened to those dreams of freedom. The dreams that her generation was made to believe they were the custodians of.

FOREVER AMBER:

F orever Amber is an independent feature documentary that investigates the thorny issue of whether to legalise the trade in rhino

horn in South Africa and delves deep into the controversial debate; whether South Africa should petition CITES to legalise the trade.

A concept unique to South Africa yet applicable to the world, the documentary introduces the notion of “African Conservation”, taking the needs of the communities that live around the game reserves into consideration as you do conservation, and explores the legalisation of the trade in rhino horn from the perspective of the inhabitants from communities that live around protected areas and how the legalisation of the trade will impact these communities.

Forever Amber is the story of how the future of a young man’s life, his community

and so many others is dictated by decisions made by governments, organisations and conservationists, some of whom are far removed from the front line.

FORGINGAHEAD:

F orging Ahead is a film about relationships. A young man from a poor background is surrounded with nothing more than good positive

relationships and he uses those as his springboard to change his school marks.

Mzimasi aka JB Bhomela is an 18 year old who is the last born son of 8 Bhomela kids. Mzimasi Bhomela moved from the Eastern Cape to Limpopo with his father at the age of 4. His dad was a miner, and Bhomela worked hard in school to pursue a better life. His father was retrenched and Bhomela had to rely on his siblings for survival while he continued with his schooling.  In 2014 he wrote his final high school exam that would determine if he’d move to a tertiary learning institution

This young man who relied on his siblings for assistance and understands what poverty is, walked and hiked the 20km to and from school daily. A few years before he did not

perform well in Mathematics and Science subjects. His siblings encouraged him to study harder. Intervention from a non-profit organization with extra Saturday classes and his teachers all made a huge impact and change in attitude.

It has been a tough road, but like all Bhomela siblings, poverty can be arrested and changed.

MY GRANDFATHER’S BONES:

Documentary film-maker Jedi Mulovhedzi embarks on a quest to recover his Grandfather’s bones. In this journey he embraces the

character of his late grandfather, Jack Tshifularo. Mr. Tshifularo was a well known artist and entertainer in the 50’s and when he passed on, he was buried a pauper. This was due to the apartheid Pass Laws that denied his family access to his mortal remains. Up until now, no one knows where Jedi’s grandfather has been buried. The irony in this quest is that, Jedi is not considered a ‘real’ grandson as he was born from the daughter’s side of Mr. Tshifularo. To make matters worse, his mother, who is a Christian, refuses to give him the blessing as she is totally against exhumation of her late father. However, his uncle (who is culturally regarded as ‘amba dzi fhele, meaning: My word is the last) has given Jedi the go ahead and is also looking forward to meeting his father again.

From the streets of Nyanga Township, neighbor to Cape Town International Airport, Mdu watches a sky that is littered with the sight and noise of low

flying aeroplanes. To most people in Nyanga, this serves as a

constant reminder of South Africa’s prevailing economic divide. But to 12 year old Mdu, and his two friends, it is an inspiration.

Together with Thabo, a boy on his bicycle from out of town, and Gadgets, an aloof inventor, Mdu finds partners in pursuit of a common goal: to build and fly a remote control plane.

To achieve flight, the boys must navigate the restrictive realities of the township, tormenting school bullies, and their own personal internal struggles.

An epic adventure filled with laughs, bike chases, wild animals, young romance, football, and a series of failed attempts at flight ensues.

The boys must each find in themselves the courage and resolve to succeed, and from each other, the inspiration and support to aspire to heights greater than their reality would seem to allow. Their chances of success hinge on the strength of the friendship they forge.

Will they fly? Will they fall? Or will they become the first township pilots to navigate the Nyanga Sky?

In fact, the truth behind his “accident” is far darker and twisted than he could have ever imagined and his only friend, the doctor who has taken him in, is at the centre of the conspiracy.

Flashes of seemingly disparate memories invade John’s dreams and he has trouble controlling his emotions and bodily impulses. His brute strength is only matched by his sudden and extreme outbursts of anger. When he finally runs away, only his physical therapist, a young courageous woman, is brave enough to take him in and help unravel the complex story of his origins.

ONE LIFEAFTER NATURE:

I t was all through natural remedies that maintained the relationship between mud and man. A thousand years ago, the majority of the African

race verily relied on natural substances. Throughout the years the average African male and female have disconnected themselves from the ancient ways of healing. Today we discover how birth has revolutionized our lives; in ancient times a premature child did not experience going through modern medical care procedures, it was all through natural remedies maintaining the relationship between mud and man. We follow three women born prematurely and 25 women who have to decide between technology and nature, to determine what we trust for the future of our children: technology or nature. The story that will discover the truth about us, who we are and where we come from, if culture is what made me, why do I have

subscribe to another foreign ideology? A future of three to convince 25 women to return to their cultures, if science can prove it, why wait?
