1.1 Objective of Routine MaintenanceThis section describes the purpose of routine maintenance.

Routine Maintenance is preventive maintenance measure conducted during the normal operationof the device. Routine Maintenance helps to discover the defects or possible faults of the deviceand rectify them, on time. Routine maintenance guarantees long-term, stable, and reliableoperation of the device.

NOTE

This manual describes the procedure for maintaining the device through the command line interface (CLI).To maintain the device through the Huawei network management system (NMS), refer to the relevantmanual.

1.2 Maintenance SpecificationsThis section describes the principles of routine maintenance, including the following:specifications for the environment of the equipment room, requirements for the maintenancepersonnel, specifications for maintenance, specifications for maintenance terminals, and theother specifications.

Pay attention to the following specifications while maintaining the device:

Specifications for the Environment of the Equipment RoomAdhere to the following rules:

l Maintain the environment of the equipment room in compliance with the related industrystandards.

l Keep the room clean, tidy, dust-proof, and moisture-proof.

l Take precautions to prevent the growth of fungi and mildew.

l Take precautions to prevent the entry of rodents and insects into the room.

Requirements for the Maintenance PersonnelMaintenance personnel should meet the following requirements:

l Only trained maintenance personnel can undertake maintenance tasks.

l The maintenance personnel must be familiar with maintenance theory, and be good at basicoperation skills and emergency handling skills.During maintenance, the personnel must strictly follow the operation procedures andindustry safety standards to prevent accidents.

Specifications for MaintenanceAdhere to the following rules:

l Establish scientific and strict regulations to ensure effective device maintenance.

l Carry out a check periodically and maintain the records.

l Manage management-level passwords properly and change them regularly to ensuresecurity. Assign different passwords to maintenance personnel to ensure system security.

l Record all the significant operations, such as board switching, system resetting, andsoftware loading. Before performing such operations, analyze the situation and take backupemergency and security measures.

l Authorize and control the modification of data, back up the data before modification, andmaintain modification records.

l Wear anti-static wrist straps while operating the device. If a board is faulty, store it in ananti-static bag.

Specifications for Maintenance TerminalsAdhere to the following rules:

l Do not install invalid firewall software and anti-virus software on the maintenance terminal.

Other SpecificationsAdhere to the following rules:

l Ensure the availability of spare parts, especially the boards. In case of failure, replace thefaulty part.

l Return the faulty part to the Huawei local office or the sales agent of Huawei for repair.

l If the fault cannot be rectified, contact the Huawei Customer Service Center or the localHuawei office for technical assistance.

1.3 Classification of Routine MaintenanceThis section describes the classification of routine maintenance tasks.

According to the maintenance period, routine maintenance is classified into two types: dailyroutine maintenance and periodic routine maintenance.

1.3.1 Daily Routine Maintenance

1.3.1 Daily Routine MaintenanceDaily routine maintenance is carried out by the ordinary maintenance personnel.

The daily routine maintenance items are:

l Alarm system

l Operation status of the device

Daily routine maintenance is performed to:

l Locate alarms or other problems and solve them promptly. This helps in the stablefunctioning of the device and lowers the failure rate.

l Find out the faults on the links or connections quickly and solve them to ensure normalprovision of services.

l Have real-time information about the operation of the device and the network. This helpsto improve the efficiency of troubleshooting.

1.3.2 Periodic Routine MaintenancePeriodic routine maintenance is relatively complex. It must be carried out by the maintenancepersonnel who have undergone professional trainings.

The periodic routine maintenance items are:

l Power supply

l Grounding resistance

l Dust on the device

Periodic maintenance is done to:

l Ensure the secure and stable operation of the device for a long period.

l Check for problems such as device aging, function failures, and performance degradation.You can do this by regularly checking, testing and cleaning the devices and creating abackup of the data.

1.4 Use of Routine Maintenance Record FormsThis section describes the usage of maintenance tables.

During maintenance, record the check results for future reference. 4 Routine MaintenanceRecord Forms provides the following record forms:l Daily maintenance record form

l Weekly maintenance record form

l Monthly maintenance record form

l Quarterly maintenance record form

l Half yearly maintenance record form

l Yearly maintenance record form

l Problem record form

The maintenance personnel should fill in the record form after the inspection.

You can modify the record form as required or append the maintenance details to the recordform to compile a maintenance manual.

When filling in the record form, you can select "Normal" or "Abnormal" in the Check Resultcolumn. You can also describe the fault in the Description column.

Record troubleshooting procedures and maintenance results in the problem record form.

2.1 Routine Maintenance Cycle and ItemsThis section describes the routine maintenance items. You can select the routine maintenancecycle and items according to the table.

NOTE

l The installation tools, meters, and related devices are not delivered with the S9300.

l Meters must be calibrated before use.

The routine maintenance items provide references and suggestions for maintenance of therunning environment, software and hardware of the S9300.

In routine maintenance, you can maintain the S9300 according to the maintenance items. Inaddition, you can add or delete routine maintenance items according to the actual networkingand environment of the equipment room.

Table 2-1 lists all the routine maintenance items mentioned in this document.

CAUTIONTo ensure the heat dissipation of the equipment and smooth airflow through the air filters, youmust clean the air filters periodically. It is recommended that you clean the air filters at leastonce a quarter. The air filters should be cleaned more frequently in the poor environment of theequipment room. In this case, it is recommended that you replace the air filters once a year. Fordetails about how to clean the air filters, see 3.1.1 Cleaning the Air Filter.

3.1 Cleaning the EquipmentThis section describes how to remove dust from air filter, boards, optical interfaces, andconnectors.

WARNINGl Take ESD preventive measures. For example, you must operate at an antistatic workbench

and wear antistatic clothes and wrist straps.l To ensure heat dissipation and ventilation of the system, and prevent the air filter from being

covered by dust, clean the air filter every three months. If the equipment room is dusty, cleanit more frequently.

3.1.1 Cleaning the Air Filter

ContextThe air filter of the S9300 is used to filter dust in the air that is used for heat dissipation andventilation in the chassis.

The air filter does not need power and is hot swappable. It is convenient for cleaning.

ProcedureStep 1 Remove the air filter.

1. Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and connect the grounding terminal to the ESD jackon the rack.

2. Loosen the captive screws of the air filter anti-clockwise with a Philips screwdriver, asshown in Figure 3-1 ①.

3. Grasp the handle of the air filter and pull out the air filter, as shown in Figure 3-1 ②.

Step 2 Clean the air filter.

1. Dust off air filter.

2. Flap and Vacuum the air filter or wash the air filter and dry it.

Step 3 Install the air filter.

1. Insert the clean and dry air filter into the chassis, as shown in Figure 3-2 ①.

2. Tighten the captive screws of the air filter with a Philips screwdriver, as shown in Figure3-2 ②.

3.1.2 Cleaning the Fan Frame

Context

During the operation of the device, the fan, the controlling circuit board and some other parts ofthe fan frame absorb the dust in the air. When a certain amount of dust is accumulated, theoperation stability of the fan frame will be affected. In addition, the accumulated dust becomesthe pollution source of the service cabinet and hence threats the stable operation of the device.To ensure the stable operation of the device, the maintenance personnel must clean all the fanframes every one years.

Procedure

Step 1 Clean the spare fan frame.

Clean the fan, controlling circuit board and other parts of the spare fan frame with clean cottonpledget, antistatic soft brush and vacuum cleaner. There should be no dust on the fan frame aftercleaning.

Step 2 Replace the fan frame to be cleaned.1. Check the position of the fan module to be cleaned.

Before removing a fan module that is to be replaced, check the position of the fan module,for example, the cabinet and chassis where the fan module is installed. Then, find out thefan module to be replaced in the chassis and attach a label to the panel to identify the fanmodule.

2. Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and connect the grounding terminal to the ESD jackon the rack.

3. Remove the fan module to be replaced from the chassis.

a. Loosen the four captive screws on both sides of the fan module with a crossscrewdriver, as shown in Figure 3-3 ①.

b. Grasp the handles on the two sides of the fan module and pull out the fan module, asshown in Figure 3-3 ②.

4. Locate the spare fan module into the chassis.

a. Grasp the handles on the two sides of the fan module and push the fan module intothe chassis, as shown in Figure 3-4 ①. When you push the fan module, align thelocating holes on the panel of the fan module with the bolts on the chassis. Push thefan module gently until the panel of the fan module touches the two sides of the chassis.

b. Tighten the captive screws clockwise with a cross screwdriver to secure the fan modulein the chassis, as shown in Figure 3-4 ②.

5. Verify the function of the new fan module.

In normal situations, after a new fan module is inserted into the chassis, the fansimmediately start to operate to blow air into the chassis. In this case, you can check whetherthe fan module functions normally as follows:

l If the STATUS indicator on the panel of the fan module is green and blinks at thefrequency of 0.5 Hz, it indicates that the fan module runs normally. If the indicator isred, it indicates that the fan module is abnormal.

l Run the display fan command to view the running status of the new fan module. If theoutput is displayed as follows, it indicates that the new fan module works normally.Take the S9312 for example:

The preceding output information indicates that the fan module returns to the normal state.If the fan module is still abnormal, contact the Huawei local office for timely technicalsupport.

Step 3 Clean the replaced fan frame.

Clean the fan, controlling circuit board, and other parts of the spare fan frame with clean cottonpledget, antistatic soft brush, and vacuum cleaner. This fan frame is used as the spare one aftercleaning.

3.1.3 Cleaning the Boards

ContextDuring the operation of the device, dust accumulates on the boards because of air convection inthe process of heat dissipation. More dust accumulates on boards if the air is not clean and therelative humidity is low. When a large amount of dust is accumulated, the heat dissipation andthe electric insulation of boards are affected. This thus threatens the stable operation of thedevice.

To ensure the stable operation of the device, the maintenance personnel must clean all the boardsevery two years.

Precautions

WARNINGl Take ESD preventive measures during the whole process of routine maintenance. For

example, perform operations on an antistatic workbench and wear antistatic clothes and wriststraps.

l Use the detergent that conforms to the industry standard; otherwise, the board may bedamaged.

CAUTIONRemoving boards that are in service may affect the operation of services. Therefore, clean theboards when traffic is low, for example, between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.

Procedure

Step 1 Prepare spare boards.

You must prepare a spare board for each board in the cabinet before you clean all the boards.

Step 2 Replace boards.

Replace a board with the spare board. You can start removing the dust from the board only whenthe spare one is running normally.

Step 3 Remove dust.

The process of cleaning the boards should be such that the physical attributes and electricalattributes of the boards are protected. The two ways to clean dust are as follows:l Using the vacuum

Brush dust off the board surface with a clean and dry antistatic soft brush and align the dustintake of a vacuum with the brush. In this case, dust is removed immediately when it isbrushed off.This method features simple operation and low cost. But it is difficult to remove harmful gasthat is adsorbed on the board surface.

l Using the detergentUse the anhydrous, erosion-free, non-conductive, and highly volatile detergent such asIsopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to remove dust from boards.

CAUTIONIt is recommended that you wear respirator when you use the detergent such as IPA.

This method helps to remove dust and harmful gases that are adsorbed on the board surface.It, however, is a complex operation and involves high cost.

Step 4 Reuse boards.

Due to the limited number of spare boards, you can use the cleaned boards to replace the dirtyones.

ContextYou can back up the configuration files by using the following ways.

Procedurel Copying the Screen Directly

In the CLI, run the display current-configuration command. Copy all the display to txtdocuments, then back up the configuration files to the hard disk of the maintenance terminal.

l Backing Up the Configuration Files Through TFTP1. Copy the configuration files in the CF card directly.

This action is to back up the current configuration files that are stored in the CF cardof the router.

After startup of the device, use the following commands to back up the configurationfiles in the CF card of the router.

2. Assign an IP address for the router.

The router acts as the TFTP client.

Connect the router to the maintenance terminal. Establish the Telnet environment andassign an IP addresses for the interface. Ensure that the IP address of the routerinterface and the IP address of the TFTP server are in the same network segment.

3. Start up the TFTP server application program.

Start up the TFTP server application in the PC. Set the path, the IP address, and theport number of the TFTP server to download the configuration files.

4. Transfer the configuration files.

On the CLI interface, run the tftp command. For example:<Quidway> tftp 10.110.24.209 put config.cfg Transfer file in binary mode. Now begin to copy file to remote tftp server, please wait for a while TFTP: 1503 bytes sent in 1 seconds. File uploaded successfully!

l Backing Up the Configuration Files Through FTP1. Connect the router to the maintenance terminal, establish the Telnet environment and

assign an IP address for the interface.2. Start up FTP service.

The router acts as the FTP server.

Start up the FTP server on the router. Create an FTP user whose username is routerand password is 123. Authorize the user to visit cfcard:\.<Quidway> system-view[Quidway] ftp server enable[Quidway] aaa[Quidway-aaa] local-user router password simple 123[Quidway-aaa] local-user router ftp-directory cfcard:/[Quidway-aaa] local-user router service-type ftp

3. Initiate an FTP connection to the router from the maintenance terminal.

On the PC, establish an FTP connection with the router through the FTP client. Forexample, the IP address of the router is 10.110.24.254.C:\Documents and Setting\Administrator> ftp 10.110.24.254Connected to 10.110.24.254.220 FTP service ready.User (10.110.24.254:(none)): router331 Password required for router.Password:230 User logged in.

4. Set the parameters.

After the FTP user passes authentication, the FTP client prompts "ftp>". Enterbinary and specify the directory for storing the configuration files on the FTP client.

5 Recommended Maintenance Items

This appendix provides a simplified table of daily and weekly maintenance items.

Generally, you need to maintain all the items listed in 2.1 Routine Maintenance Cycle andItems. You can perform maintenance as recommended in this appendix, however, when youhave many devices and cannot manage to maintain all the items.

NOTE

l The monthly, quarterly, half yearly, and yearly maintenance items are necessary and will not take toomuch time. It is therefore recommended that you maintain all these items according to 2.1 RoutineMaintenance Cycle and Items.

l Table 5-1 lists the simplified daily and weekly maintenance items. You can choose maintenance itemsbased on the actual situation.

6 Risky Operations

This appendix describes the operations that may cause human injury or equipment fault.

6.1 Risky Hardware OperationsThe following hardware operations may affect the service running and hardware safety or harmthe human body; therefore, perform the following operations with caution.

6.1 Risky Hardware OperationsThe following hardware operations may affect the service running and hardware safety or harmthe human body; therefore, perform the following operations with caution.

Hot swapping the in-service active main boardis prohibited.

l When the standby main board runs normally,data synchronization between the activeboard and the standby one requires a certainperiod. When the active main board isplugged out, the system performs automaticswitchover. The latest data on the active mainboard, however, cannot be backed up entirelyto the standby main board. This results inwrong statistics and data loss.

l When the standby main board fails, removingthe in-service active main board results ininterruption of part of or even all services.

Pressing the Reset buttonon the main board at will isprohibited.

l Pressing the Reset button on the panel forcesthe board to reset its hardware. This operationcan be carried out only by the qualifiedpersonnel when fatal faults occur in thesystem.

l If the Reset button on the panel is pressed bymistake, the main board will be reset. Itsresults are the same as those of removing thein-service active main board.

Inserting or removingboards without wearing anantistatic wrist strap isprohibited.

l Electrostatic discharge on human bodydamages electrical components on the board.

l If the maintenance personnel insert or removeboards without wearing an antistatic wriststrap, the board may be damaged or may notrun properly.

Operationson boards

Debugging the serial portof the board through theserial cable is prohibited.

Only Huawei engineers can use the debuggingserial port. Otherwise, abnormality of boardprogram or board resetting may be caused.

Operationsfor cable

Installing or removingnetwork cables inside thecabinet at will isprohibited.

l The network cables inside the cabinet are usedfor communication between the host and themaintenance terminal.

l Installing and removing the cables inside thecabinet at will may cause the maintenanceterminal to fail to log in to the switch.
