ell here we are again with another jam packed edition of S40 Local – I

hope you like it!

The last edition generated complaints – 6 in total (a record) – fortunately, they were all asking ‘why, even though I live in S40, don’t I get the magazine’. It’s a simple answer and it’s down to the way the moon affects the tidal movements… oh no sorry that’s not it! We deliver 8,000 copies, to every house in the area we cover – and that’s 4,000 more houses than we were delivering to a year ago – but as with any business, we

can’t expand further until we know we have our cost base covered for the months ahead. We like to think we’ll expand again at some point, but that needs your continued support.

We’re all about informing you of the great businesses we have in the area, keeping you aware of what they are up to and encouraging you to use them.

So when you do use them – please tell them where you saw

their advert and that it helped you make your decision.

Timebanking originated in the US; with a simple basic principle. If you have a skill which other members could use, you can make it available in blocks of 1 hour. Each hour that you do something for another member or associated organisation is credited to your account. Then, if another Timebank member provides you with help they gain the time in their account, and yours is debited accordingly. The important thing is the hours can be moved around between accounts ‐ you don’t earn time from, or repay other members directly. You can even donate unused hours to other members if you wish. Timebank lists services required, so members can select any they would like to help with. People are then put directly in touch, so they can make arrangements informally between themselves, telling the Timebank what hours were used so they are credited/debited accordingly.

Timebanking is not a substitute for services provided by official agencies, as it works at a local level where the bigger organisations may be ineffective. Chesterfield Timebank is funded by The British Legion, with whom it is working on health and well‐being projects; please get in touch if you or anyone you know may be a potential beneficiary or if you would like to get involved.

ie Lounge … Although this business sits slightly outside of S40, the general manager Richard Wood is local, living in Somersall so it seems only right that we have a quick chat about his business.

Vie Lounge is located behind St Marys church, you know… the one with the twisted spire! The directors Mark Jennison and Shane Hendon brought in Richard as manager after wanting to develop a Champagne and Cocktail bar, they knew Richard and were keen to get someone in who knew the game. After originally working in Chandlers Bar just a few doors down from Vie Lounge, Richard has spent a few years travelling the world working in cocktail bars and perfecting the art of “Flair Bar Tending”. Richard says that “judging by the response, we’re getting it just right. Recently we’ve had some London customers who were staying at the Ibis Hotel. They were pleasantly surprised to find Vie Lounge and were extremely happy with our cocktails, especially when they were paying about 50% of the London price … what can I say, London cocktails at Chesterfield prices, now that can’t be a bad thing can it?” Richard’s company The Bespoke Bar Tender Company can also be booked for your event or party, they can provide basic waiters and seasoned bar staff through to a great nights entertainment mixing cocktails, why not book them to run a cocktail class, a must for any Hen Night. f you’ve ever walked down Old Hall Road ‐ you know, the part between Morrison’s island and the Rose and Crown, you may have noticed

a small courtyard on the right. Ever wondered what this is and what happens there?

The place in question is known as “Brampton Courtyard”, at 11a Old Hall Road. It’s owned by local business man, Liam Jacques who is also the driving force behind Brampton Picture Framing. This month we caught up with Liam to find out a bit more.

Liam believes that in 1900 (ish) the collection of buildings supported a coal yard, stables and blacksmiths. Records show a H. Jackson & Son Coal Merchants working from the site. Headley Taylor, a timber merchant and wood turner worked from the courtyard making cricket stumps, amongst other things until as recently as 1985. In the mid 1980’s Bernard Holmes a local businessman bought the yard and set about renovating it to create small business units.

Since this time there’ve been various interesting occupants; the Liberal Democrats had their offices there, plus accountancy services (possibly Chatsworth Accountancy Services), a company offering medical training, a building company, an audio visual installers (TSC Ltd) , and a kitchen showroom (Courtyard Kitchens) have all taken units at some point in the recent years. Liam is keen to find out more, so if you can shed any light on its history he’d love to hear from you.

Liam’s business Barton Galleries (bartongalleries.com) originally operated from home until his pictures and stock started to take over three rooms of the house, “clearly time to move and grow the business” he thought.

“One day I was chatting to Bernard, the owner, about the courtyards history, I was impressed with how it had evolved with the times. I happened to mention what a great place it was for my business”. It transpired that Bernard had been

thinking of selling ‐ negotiations began and Liam took ownership in January 2008.

“I was aware of a need in the area for spaces for small businesses and decided I could to combine this with premises for my expanding business.

In Brampton Courtyard I established small units with low affordable rates and flexible leases to attract new and small businesses. I hoped this approach would encourage people to get involved.

I set up a website and started looking for suitable occupants. As this progressed we developed a theme around arts and craft based businesses. Today we have six businesses in the units including my business, Brampton Picture Framing.”

Brampton Picture Framing ‐ the local Fine Art Trade Guild registered picture framer, framing all sorts of art items.

Language Learning Centre ‐ offers French, Spanish and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) language lessons to small groups.

The Created Gallery Workshop ‐ space for Deidre Gage from Created Gallery to run felt making courses.

Georgia Peskett’s Studio ‐ local artist who’s artwork consists of architectural based pieces featuring backdrops across the world.

Harlequin Arts ‐ which evolved out of a passion for creativity and the desire to enable others to both realise and express themselves through their own creativity ‐ run by Karen Herrick.

Liza Bakes ‐ supplying local cafes and delicatessens with scrumptious deserts and cakes.

Excluding Liam the present occupants are all young businesses and this creates a comfortable and supportive environment for the businesses to develop and grow.

It’s aim, again, is simple, to provide a community resource so you can find out ‘what’s on’ and search for local businesses, if you don’t have the magazine to hand.

Every month we’ll add in the latest edition, which you will be able to read on the funky reader, it’s easy to use and, I think, really effective! You’ll also be able to look back at previous editions, refer to the useful numbers and contact us ‐ via the contact page, should you want to get in touch.

We are constantly amazed at the positive feedback we receive, and the people from outside the area who want to have a read, so hopefully

(although you will need to have web access) it will enable even more folk to view the magazine each month.

As with all new stuff there are bound to be some teething problems but I hope you will let us know what you think. As I write this there are no businesses loaded and the ‘What’s On’ is empty, gives me a week to sort it before you receive this issue of S40 Local!

Great news for Clare Gage. She has been awarded an Arts Council grant of £10,000. This will enable Clare to purchase a loom and have professional moulds made by one of the countries few remaining specialists in Stoke. This will enable Clare to increase the speed of production for commissions such as the Mayors Cuppapeal which is helping raise funds for Fairplay and the Samaritans.

Clare’s mum, Deirdre at Created Gallery has also been in touch to say that she has Andy Rogers “Overground” maps coving Holymoorside, Chesterfield (below) and Derbyshire.

Also at Created Gallery they have the Strawberry Sunday exhibition on 8th August where local artist Kate Pheasey will be on hand to talk you through her unusual mosaic artwork.

Sunshine Nursery 20 Years Young!

In September 1990 Sunshine Nursery based at Walton Hospital, opened their doors for the first time. It might even have been Joanne Rodd or Tracey Taylor, who are both still working there, who opened them! Perhaps you were one of those children. Well, twenty years on, the nursery’s still going strong continuing to provide a safe, fun and stimulating learning environment for all the children in their care.

Sunshine was originally set up as a workplace nursery for parents working in the NHS, Chesterfield Borough and North East Derbyshire Borough Councils ‐ offering 50 places split between the organisations. At that time there was only one other nursery in Chesterfield. Today the nursery runs as a commercial business, as part of the Derbyshire Community Health Service, with 58 registered places.

Over the years Sunshine have welcomed approximately 1,000 children through their doors, and their loyal nursery staff have clocked up approximately 320 years of experience between them.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary they are holding a fun day on the 4th September, so, if you’ve been a Sunshine Nursery child, or if you’d like to visit just for the event, they would love to see you on Saturday between 2:00 ‐ 4:30, for a fun packed day.

The well dressings in Holymoorside celebrate local or national anniversaries, the subject being a well kept secret until construction begins. You could be amongst the first to discover the themes of the three Well Dressings; one prepared by children under 10, one for young people 10 – 16 and the main Well.

Derbyshire dressings are traditionally prepared under cover with the frame laid out flat, but that’s not the case in Holymoorside. Here a huge wooden frame (approximately 12 ft x 9 ft) is erected on site and visitors can see the picture being created from scratch. The dressers are always willing to answer questions.

THE CONSTRUCTION: Work begins when the clay, saved from previous years, is soaked in the river, ‘paddled’ and thickly applied by hand to the frame. The design is outlined with small pieces of wood – known as ‘barking up’ ‐ ready to receive the plant material.

The skilled well dressers use whole flower heads, wherever possible (never shells, wool, paint or stone) and plant material donated by local gardeners. As the picture is created in situ, the finished result produces an astonishing 3D effect. If you have not visited before – come along it is not to be missed.

You can see the ‘work in progress’ from Saturday 21st August. The Well Blessing Service, supported by Holymoorside Band is on Thursday 26th August at 7.00pm, and the Well Dressings will be on view until Saturday 8th September.

Alongside the well dressings is the Scarecrow Trail, fun figures on show throughout the village from 23rd August ‐ walk around the village and spot your favourite. Two popular inspirational annual exhibitions ‐ Arts & Crafts Exhibition in St. Peter’s Church, and Chesterfield Embroiderers’ Guild Summer Exhibition in Holymoorside Methodist Chapel, both on view from Thurs 26th – Mon 30th August.

On Saturday 28th August @ 2pm till 5pm there is the annual Family Fun Day at the village hall and recreation ground, with so much to enjoy including Ireland Colliery Band, Birds of Prey, Rural Crafts, Fairground Rides and Games, Cream Teas etc. as well as a Scarecrow Fancy Dress competition.

he summer holidays have arrived and there are six weeks (at the time of writing!) to get through before we pack the kids

back off to school again.

So what shall we do? Well here we may have the answer, we’ve tried to include many free activities, aside from the cost of getting there, parking and perhaps visiting the café’s or coffee shops … an essential element we think!

Our aim is to provide a few suggestions, so you can refer to it when you’re out of ideas.

Farms? graze (every pun intended) the selection below we should be well stocked here …

Matlock Farm Park – not more than 10 minutes away from here.

Graves Park in Sheffield – here the

farm is free, and you’ve also got the advantage of good paths for cycling, a good sized park for walks and a café.

Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground.

And a little further afield Sherwood Forest Farm Park and White Post Farm, out towards Mansfield.

Moving away from farms, perhaps you’re looking to rediscover the Peak District and remember the fantastic scenery and quaint villages just on the doorstep.

A particular favourite for us is Curbar Edge, with fantastic views over the valley, and rocks for the kids to climb on (I hope I don’t need a disclaimer to warn you that if you fall over a large cliff it is likely to/will hurt!). Walks round Linacre Reservoir are great for a bit of fresh air – or Longshaw Estate is lovely for short walks, fun in the water at Padley Gorge, a visit to the café or even a longer walk across the road onto Carl Walk and Higger Tor. Close by there’s great scrambling and climbing over the rocks a short walk from the car park at Surprise View or from Fairholmes visitor centre at Ladybower Reservoir you can cycle, walk or discover the Dambusters.

Matlock Bath and Matlock have great parks and some seaside styled entertainment – if a trip to the coast is just too far. Also here is Gullivers Kingdom or the Heights of Abraham for cable car rides up to the caves.

Visit Castleton for show caves or a walk to the top of Mam Tor. And for playground fun try the recently refurbished park at Bakewell.

If you fancy a cycle we’ve miles of cycle tracks, the Monsal Trail, Middleton Top or Tissington, to name a few.

Weston Park Museum in Sheffield is

completely free, our kids love

it, buttons to press, things to touch and activities to do as well as a good café. Even better when

combined with

a trip on the tram from the ‘park and ride’ or Crystal Peaks – perhaps an option for a rainy day.

If you like trams and trains don’t forget Crich Tramway Museum,

Peak Rail for a steam train ride ‐ get on at Rowsley or Matlock, plus the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley.

Millhouses Park in Sheffield has a great new splash water play in the park and is great fun for the kids when the sun is shining … oh and the scrambled egg and Parma ham on toast is ace!

A little drive again, but only 30 minutes , Sherwood Pines – again towards Mansfield, has a picnic and BBQ area, paths for cycling and cycle hire facilities plus a great café!

We know there’s loads more to do in the area, but hopefully this will remind you of some of the local gems that might just have slipped your mind!

So no excuses, where shall we go today?

n the S40 district we’re lucky to have a range of sporting institutions ‘getting on’ with the job of providing access to sport. And you’re probably

unaware of the very existence of many of them. Through these features we aim to broaden awareness and help promote these gems in our community.

Looking Back

In 1946 Chesterfield Barbarians Cricket Club was formed, as people, desperate to forget the horrors of war, sought some light relief. They based themselves at Somersall Park and were immediately successful but played only friendlies until the start of the 70s when the Yorkshire League was formed. Tragically, the Somersall Park pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1992, but the club had no immediate options and had to ‘make do’ with the less than perfect arrangements.

They relocated in 1997 to the Robinsons Sports Ground at Walton Dam, after the Robinsons cricket team folded a year earlier, but misfortune struck again in 2003 when the Walton Dam pavilion also fell victim to arson.

This was quite a setback, but the determination of key officials saw the club through this difficult period.

Through most of the club’s history the Barbarians have fielded just two teams, but today the club is thriving.

Barbarians Today

Currently the club run four senior teams every weekend and one midweek.

A junior section formed in 1999, has gone from strength to strength in the last few years, thanks to the provision of quality coaching in local schools. The club has links with Old Hall,

Brampton, Abercrombie, Brockwell and Hady primary schools, and as a result now field six junior "hardball" teams for children 10‐15 and four Kwik cricket teams for youngsters 7‐11. For the second successive year Old Hall excelled to reach the Derbyshire Schools 2010 Kwik Cricket Final, played at the County Ground.

From the end of April to the start of the school holidays there’s hardly a day goes by when there isn’t a game or

practice session involving the club; a huge success story in developing and nurturing interest in our national summer sport.

One particularly pleasing piece of good news is the progress of one of the club’s girl players, Georgia Ball, who’s been noticed and recently appeared in the Derbyshire County Girls team.

Alan Slack, who heads up the youth programme added “We’re all really thrilled with the progress the club has made recently. But for me it’s more about the long term development of young players and introducing them to a game that will hopefully give them a sporting interest for life.

Also our senior teams offer great

opportunities to trial our youngsters in adult weekend fixtures.”

Cricketing councillor and club Chairman, Tony Rogers, added his own thoughts “I’m over seventy now and still get the occasional call‐up to play, but I do insist on the youngsters having preference. There’s such a great family spirit at the club; my two sons played for the Barbs and I hope my two young grandsons will follow in their footsteps. I’m so proud of the club and the positive work it’s doing to promote wider interest. ”

The longer term plans of the club are to further develop the club links with schools by broadening the coaching provision to both boys and girls, encourage the progression of the senior teams to higher level leagues and pursue the building of a new pavilion at Walton Dam.
